Those swimsuits were considered incredibly revealing at the time. Women back then were otherwise always in floorlength dresses

That's 1910-1914

Your rights that's kind far away from 1890s that fashion is from 1910 to maybe 1912 or 1913
Brianne Martindale (11 months ago)
Before the 1950s gay meant happy starting in the 1970s gay meant homosexual In this clip fashions of the gay nineties the title meant fashions of the happy nineties
Allen Richards (3 months ago)
Yes. If gay meant homosexual back then, people certainly wouldn't have been saying the word gay the way they always did, people were more way more intolerant of homosexuality back then than they are today.

The footage is 1890's but the T.V voice is from 1930's or 50's.

the 1890s? more like 1910s or 1920s
Adam Pajkowski (2 years ago)
this is 1912
pbasswil (2 years ago)
I've seen the non-bathing suit portion of this somewhere else, and it was labeled 1909 – so, late Edwardian.
Bambang Priantono (2 years ago)
This is 1910-1914 fashion
Marla Singer (4 years ago)
not 1890s. definitely sometime between 1910-1920.
Julio Gonzalez (3 years ago)
I was gonna say no way all that leg and thigh shown in the 1890s.
Richard Rabinowitz (5 years ago)
Mid-20th century cobble-together of early 20th century fashion.

Lots of people here are highly misinformed! For those actually doing research, this is NOT 1890's at all. Most of these are not even Victorian! 1890's were rocking the leg o'mutton sleeves and don't even get me started on the swimsuits in this video.

I know that, as I've studied fashion history for over forty years, not just for clothing fashions, but furniture, and domestic objects, and can date, say, a chair, or a hairstyle, to within two to five years, depending on the region it's from, objects, and fashion from rural areas often had a delay in being adopted. And thats how the hell I'd know that.
satriazamis (5 years ago)
that's so sad... isn't it ?
satriazamis (5 years ago)
how the hell do you know that ???
Hurricane Dorian (5 years ago)
The models were a little fat to be swimsuit models just saying
Hurricane Dorian (5 years ago)
I know I may sound crazy immature over here but the gay nineties lolllollolool I sound so childish but its funny
Witchypooh66 (5 years ago)
Those weren't 1890's fashons they were from the early 1900's. The 1890's still had leg o'mutton sleeves, and the swimsuites were much different.
PPP (5 years ago)
i think ur right...victorian era saw those swimsuits as illegal and indecent

The dresses look to be about 1910. The swimsuits I would guess around 1920.

OMG, everyone is this footage is now dead! lol That will be all of us one day..
Maggie Ponce (6 years ago)
This is bullshit. This is obviously post turn of the century. Some of those outfits would have been scandalous in the fifties. And the footage is way to good to be that old. Don't buy it at all.
ChristianDiorScientist (6 years ago)
There is footage from the 1890s, but this footage is from 1911-12 and the bathing suits are later - about 1920
wongleebruce (6 years ago)
As they said at the time "You've come a long way baby" or was that Bogart?

From a cigarette ad in the 70s.

Its odd that a film strip from the mid century confused time periods that many viewers of the time actually remembered.
Arba Morrow (6 years ago)
I agree with the others..no earlier than 1912..However the swimsuit segment is circa 1919-21.
daniel marks (6 years ago)
I agree with some of the other comments, this is clearly not the 1890s the turbans, hobble skirts and merry widow hats clearly point to the 1909 - 1913 period. If you specialize in vintage fashion....wouldn't you have picked up on this?

"oompf" was called.... what?! i didn't get that word

this isn't the fashions fromt he 1890's the silhouette is wrong. I think if you researched the fashions at the later part of the 1900 to 1910's is really wear this comes out of! Plus bathing suits in the 1890's did not look like this, ladies were still covered from head to toe. Which further indicates the 1910's! Silent films didn't start in the 1890's so dated this video as that.. is just totally wrong. Sorry know your history!
lingonberrysquirrel (6 years ago)
So great you brought it up. I was wondering why the hats were so large etc. Thanks!
eukryptos (6 years ago)
Strange mistake that the footage was dated back to the 1890s - the fashions are actually from about 1910 (large hats, turban-like hats, high waist, trousers under a skirt which was the latest in fashion in 1911 ...)

Theres something magical about watching film from so long ago!
Nia the Gulf Gypsy (6 years ago)
Thanks for posting!!! Love the large brimmed hats of that era. Use of lace and trim on the garments. But know I couldn't handle being that confined by my clothing.
Falbert Forester (6 years ago)
I'd little idea that there was footage from this far back. Thank you for posting!

We love the fact that these people were wandering around and being filmed 120 years ago. Extraordinary!
