Hello Clay I'm a lil bit confused I'm a new investor and lost money on a day trade due to using the wrong sell order which is totally my fault. I did make two successful small day trades, but I lost on my third trade. Here is my question. If I buy a high volatility stock that has a high volume of heavy trading going on "obviously alot of buying and selling" I buy a stock at $5.00 and want to sell it at $7.00 but since it's so volatile and by the time I place my order and it executes the price drops to $5.05 or even lower like $4.50 then I'm obviously losing money. Which sell order would I use to sell the stock automatically at $5.05 in order for it to protect me from incurring a loss and preserve my original cost of $5.00? Btw I love and watch all your videos there very educational and informative and I truly enjoy them not to mention you inspired me to start trading. Thank you Clay for all you do for the investing community and this channel. Also what is your website cause I'm looking into taking my education further and buy your course Thank you.

I don't know if this is the advanced trading you alluded to, but a lot of places these days use Market, Limit, and Stop both for Buy and Sell. So if I suspect a stock will gap up early in the day but want to make sure today is that day, I can place a Stop Loss Buy above the market price to buy if it starts moving up. Basically (for viewers) it goes: Market is buy/sell at whatever the price is. Stop is buy/sell and it's already moving a direction and you expect it to keep going in that direction. So when a stock starts to go up, but you want to make sure it's really going up, you place a stop buy order for a price further along in that direction. So you're pretty sure your dad is going to Canada, and you want to get to Canada, but you want to set your pickup spot out of town on the highway in case your dad is only driving to the store. A limit is a buy/sell that you expect to reach a point and reverse. You think it will move up but you suspect it isn't quite done moving down yet so you place a limit order to buy below where it's at. So your dad is still going to Canada but you don't want to go to Canada. You're trying to get him to take you the other way to your house before he turns around to go to Canada. It's a risk because at any point on the way to your house, he may just turn around and drive the other way. I'm sure that helped no one but it sure was fun to think up.

Thanks for the lesson. So what is it called when - say there's a company waiting some potentially good news. So you say: "If this stock RISES another $0.50 to $25.50, then buy the stock." What type of order is this?

That'd be an advanced order type. Maybe I'll do a video on that at some point.

What do you mean by you only want to risk 10 cent? I got loss during the explanation of market stop loss. I hope you see the comment, I know this video is 2 years old.
ClayTrader (3 months ago)
You can lose money when trading stocks. so you need to focus on the risk that is associated with any trade you take/think about taking.
Ryan Tek (3 months ago)
So if you put out a stop loss limit order at 24.90 and the market jumps under your limit like the 24.85 example you gave, can you change the limit order to a market order at any time? Or are you stuck with that position until it reaches 24.90 again, however long that might be? I like your videos too btw, thanks
ClayTrader (3 months ago)
You can change it anytime you'd like.
John McKay (3 months ago)
Why do i need a broker? Normally you walk into a shop, see what you like, pick it off the shelf, walk over to the check out and purchase it. I don't want to pay someone else to buy it for me and then they charge me a fee?

+orlandomc You want to be able to "start young" for sure. But in order to be most effective at it for the rest of your life, you need a strategy for your personal finances first. That's why I sent you that link.
