When the first X-men movie came out I was so disappointed at the costumes, because I believed there was a way to make more colorful ones work. The First Class happen and I was like “ummmm yeah, but now we’re so far behind” The movie industry were afraid to take that chance, I get it. But missed opportunity...I believe so. Great video, you hit so many point right on

Holy crap, this was hilarious. I think it can be done, but they'd have to use a slightly darker color pallet and simplify the designs just a hair. Otherwise it does look just a tiny bit ridiculous. For example, Batinthsun did a Wolverine vs. Wonder Woman video (very violent, don't watch, but not my point) the costumes were comic accurate, but they did look weird to me in a real life setting. Just my opinion, no flames.

My Dude!!!you Ripped them a new one!! But yeah...X men Apologies should have been the title for that movie.

I think the X-Men costumes should look like the ones from Evolution. I mean the first ever X-Men related thing I’ve watched was that show.

I agree that all the major superhero movies should be vibrant and inspiring and powerful. Because that's what Superheroes are, an escapism and exploration of overpowered human beings. But to be fair, the scripts for the majority of these films wouldn't have worked with those suits. The problem really is as someone below said that these directors and writers aren't "creative enough". And they really aren't. The first time we've seen Marvel REALLY go all the way is with the recent Infinity War, which comes the closest to actually representing the wild, crazy and wonderful combinations of superhero characters. The way they always should have been. But the trash writers of Hollywood don't know how to write stories like that, that actually grasp what Superheroes ultimately are. Not just shitty "action heroes", but a vibrant, strenghtening celebration of people and imagination. Not lackluster trash like the XMen film franchise or the abysmal DCEU 😑

Psylocke's costume in Apocalypse was probably the only good things in the movie

The reason singers X men where colourless was quite simple, just like every other jackass superhero movie directors who robbed the superheroes of their comic book colour, they wanted to ground the characters in reality !!!

4:11 except he was in the military, he VERY well knows the importance of wearing a uniform

Superman, batman, wonderwoman, spiderman, captain america, iron man and the list goes on of super heroes with colorful costumes that have been brought to the movie screen with pretty much comic book accuracy. The b.s. excuse for the xmen not having them is just b.s. But then again everything about the xmen franchise has been lazy, the writing, the directing, the acting, the special effects,in general just freaking everything. I hope marvel studios can revive them, they really have their work cut out if they even try.

The black leather suit is ok but at least give them their design on the suit n bits of the yellow n blue out lines on that leather
Robert Lee (25 days ago)
Look I personally liked Hugh jackmans look as wolverine in the movies it’s way better than that flairing ear mask he wears in the old comics but the black leather suit that was way over the top do you think that if Logan was real would he wear some of the suits in the movies ? Hell if superhero’s were real do you think they would wear a costume ? If I was a superhero I,d probably go with camo not spandex & a creepy skull pull over mask to hide my identity
Mostwanted (26 days ago)
If they picked color the movies would of been Mocked like the 90's Batman movies, they had to go with all black because of the new "Good" Batman movies, I hate the new batman movies
Benjamin Connor (29 days ago)
I think that , because of what the X-men initially stand for, a commentary on racism, people feel the need to use them in a dark "realistic" enviroment. So they shy away from the bright colors and the lighter more dynamic atmosphere. And this has gotten the comics doing it to in recent years. Go ahead pick up an X-men comic it looks just like the 2000's movie, black leather with little yellow highlights. (well except for Shadowcat and few others)

Now we know we will get colourful costumes when Disney brings them home.

Excellent work! Singer is no position to criticize superhero costumes. Look at what he approved for Superman’s costume.
The problem is that the first X Men was in production around the time The Matrix came out, the studios wanted their action heroes on black leather, and if you look at many comic book adaptations or action films in general from the late 90's to early 2000's, they all wear black leather.

Maybe Disney can make it right and actually use the costumes when they remake X-Men

4:17 To be fair, Wolverine's blue and yellow outfit is one of the ugliest costumes ever designed. His yellow and brown one is infinitely better, however.
Black Cross (2 months ago)
I think that "classic rebel" logic works to explain why Logan wouldn't be wearing a costume in the first X Men film or in his solo movies, but in the second and third X Men films when he had already become a full time member of Xavier's team I think they should've introduced it. If they wanted to stick with a dark color scheme, why not use a design similar to his X Force costume? Or even the brown costume? I only say this because I'm not a big fan of the yellow/blue color scheme but the suit itself could've been adapted successfully

not having the X-Men wear their costumes is homophobic

Will Wade (2 months ago)
I personally feel that Wolverine's classic costume (The tiger strip yellow and blue) looks ridiculous and I'm glad that it hasn't made it too live action, however I do think Logan should have worn a costume, namely the one that was teased in The Wolverine film, at some point in the movie franchise. That's just my opinion though and what you talk about in this video was fantastic. Nice job man!
Paul Spurgeon (3 months ago)
Cyclops and Wolverine had those colors schemes before they were on a team together. Your conclusion about their color schemes is simply wrong.

XMen movies need to catch up. Reboot that shit.

Well and now that it does seem that Disney& Fox deal will go on maybe MCU will give the some of the iconic uniforms ? In Avengers it seems that some do, some dont .

I grew up during the 80s and 90s I know how to bring colors on film to look good.... I never liked the matriX-Men but it was a great start tho...
MegaSpideyman (3 months ago)
I'm glad James called them out, James Marsden, on the costumes.
PwnzerProductions (3 months ago)
Okay, but literally the whole point of the film The Wolverine was that Logan was disillusioned with being a soldier and left the X-Men or any other cause he was fighting for. James Mangold was entirely right that wearing the blue and yellow would be out of character, because we're talking about the character in the film, not the comics. I agree that the 2000 outfits are horribly dated and unrecognizable from the comics costumes, and that later films have proven that colors can work, there's still not a 100% translation from the comics, as proven by Captain America's suit in the Avengers. Spandex DOESN'T look good on film. Movies have to strike the right balance between believable practicality and functionality, and being recognizable from the source material

Love this video, so true !!!❤️
Yes Bryan Singer, we would prefer yellow spandex. Tobey Maguire wore red and blue spandex as Spider-Man and it totally worked.
Diza K (3 months ago)
damn good critique
tcrpgfan (3 months ago)
If you want proof of why he's right... just look at spider-man. They deliberately stuck with the iconic red and blue suit because *it works* regardless of the film iteration. Sure each version of the suit looks stylistically different in certain places depending on the film, but there is a certain... 'That's Spider-Man' look to them. None of them are comic accurate, but they're not trying to change the foundation of the classic suit.

They are so ashamed of the original costumes that they deleted a scene from the Wolverine where logan looks at his yellow spandex. He doesn't even wear it. He takes a Peek and the film makers thought that was too much
stonie Cad (3 months ago)
As good as the American intro is, that Japanese version is amazing
caleb gonzalez (3 months ago)
I’ve been saying that about the X-men movies for years. They had no faith in the subject material, look at the avengers film, any of them. They use their costumes, but they ground them in reality.

Claudio Aronica (3 months ago)
I disagree with your point. I was a Wolverine fan for years before the first X men movie but I liked him despite the silly yellow uniform. I agree with the Director's point about him being the rebel outsider and black leather is perfect for him I feel.

I've only seen this now, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! First film in the Xman franchise, I remember seeing that as a teen, and after growing up on the 90s animated series and on the comics, I was so disappointed with the direction especially with the costumes and the character development. You nailed every single point of the argument. On the contrary, the same aspects that show a good amount of respect to the characters, their relationships, the craft of how these stories wind together, is something I enjoy from the MCU film franchises. I love the Xmen dearly and know them more than any other comicbook franchise, I wish they had gotten a better treatment. I guess we can hope for the far future!

What was the name of the song at the end of the video?
tvTOON (3 months ago)
I don’t think it’s that the filmmakers are embarrassed by the source material, I think it’s that the colorful costumes don’t fit the serious tone of the films. Honestly, I think you presented a boring and frankly entitled argument.

The L33 Channel (1 month ago)
Scott Johnson X-Men are coming back to the MCU. That means the X-Men are gonna be with the Avengers and Spider-Man. It also means that we’re gonna see the costumes again. If they can make Captain America and Spider-Man look cool on screen. They sure as hell can do the same to the X-Men!

Marvel and Ryan Reynolds have shown us that the color of comics can be adapted realistically, it doesn't have to be grim and gritty just to make it to live action. I always felt the Morrison/Quitely, Austen eras of X-Men were excellent, live-action ready compromises (any era but the 90s costumes though those were ridiculous). But, if we're honest about his character, Wolverine is NOT a costume type of guy--he sports it when with a team because of loyalty, but on his own, it's silly. A yellow and blue color scheme for him is even sillier--Frank Miller gave us perhaps the perfect Wolverine colors in his limited series (even if the yellow and blue costume sports the better design). Wolverine wore that though because it's what comics did at the time he was introduced, not because it suits him. You ditch his costume and he's still recognizable. You ditch his claws... then he's harder to notice. It's just as important not to mistake a tradition for an integral element.
Gustavo Delgado (3 months ago)
4:39 what comic is that?
Skribduex (3 months ago)
I think the no-costume is okay for Wolverine (especially in his solo films) because he's probably the Xmen (Xman?) who wears his costume the least because he also understands its a uniform for when he's with his team. I think, and this is just a guess, Logan knows his attitude is quite different from the others and doesn't want to misrepresent the team by wearing it while operating independently from them.
Brook Araya (3 months ago)
Man I really hope the MCU gets their hands on the X-Men, I know they would do it right!
