People who can easily fall asleep on a plane are among the lucky few because most of us aren’t able to doze off in a cramped space, sitting in such an uncomfortable position and surrounded by total strangers. What if we told you there are some simple tricks that can help you catch some Z’s on board? Who knew that flying on a Tuesday or keeping your seat belt fastened could actually make a difference? You might even get up to 3 seats to yourself! - Always try to pick a window seat to rest your head on the wall and not be bothered by your neighbor wanting to get up to go to the bathroom. If you normally sleep on your left side, aim for seat A. If your right side is your preferred sleeping position, pick the window seat on the opposite side of the plane. - If you want good quality sleep in the cabin, adjust your seat as far back as it’ll go. If your airline doesn’t provide blankets, take a jacket and warm socks too. - A seat belt fastened over your clothes or blanket won’t make your sleep more comfortable, but it will prevent flight attendants from waking you up if the plane experiences turbulence. - Light and noise are the main culprits that keep you from getting needed shuteye. So this answer might be obvious: use a sleeping mask and earplugs! - You can control the scents in your immediate surrounding. Just sprinkle the head rest or your travel pillow with some lavender oil or any other essential oil you like. - Don’t watch movies on your phone, tablet, or laptop because the blue light of the screen wakes your brain up. Most sleep experts say you should put away all your electronics at least half an hour, or, better yet, an hour before you plan on dozing off. - If you want to be fast asleep, don’t overeat onboard. Here's a weird trick on how to make yourself go to sleep fast. Sleep...sleep, sleep, sleep. I can't fall asleep at night. When I'm tired. When I'm not tired. Doesn't matter, I can't fall asleep. So you lay there, look at the clock, get upset because you have to get up in a few hours, you drink this, you read that, you flip around so your head is where your feet normally are and so on. And...nothing works. But this will. I'm going to show you a special breathing exercise that you can do, in bed, it's quiet, you won't wake anyone up, no one will even know you're doing it and you'll forget you're doing it because you'll fall asleep. Here's how it goes. When you breath in, you're going to make a sound in your head. When you breath out, you're going to make a different sound in your head. Whether you breath from your nose or mouth or both makes no difference. And the sounds you're going to make...in your head, not out loud...will be SAAAAA and Ooooom. Uh-oh, is this some mystical stuff that's way out there? Nope. The sounds are actually white noise...which is a constant noise that naturally relaxes human beings. And it just so happens, that in the English language, vowels create white noise. A...E...I...O...U. So you can really use any vowel or any words or letters that drag out with a vowel at the end. But we're going to use SAAAAA and Ooooom in this video. To start, we're going to use 3 focus breaths. These are 3 breaths that are deeper than normal breaths, but not as deep as a deep breath. Then we're going to start a rhythm, when we breath in, in our mind, we'll say SAAAAA. And when we breath out, in our mind, we're going to say OOOOOOmmm. What's important here is the rhythm...that it's consistent. SAAAA, OOOOOOm. SAAAA, OOOOOOm. SAAAA, OOOOOOm. SAAAA, OOOOOOm. SAAAA, OOOOOOm. Should you do this for a certain length of time or should you do this X number of times? Nope. In fact, if you try to count while doing this, you're going to lose track of the number pretty quickly. You're simply going to keep doing this until you screw up, which means you're about to fall asleep because you're not really conscious anymore...or you'll fall asleep and won't even remember you were doing this. On a long-haul flight it’s not only passengers who need their rest. During the course of the journey it’s important that the pilots and the cabin crew catch up on sleep. But they don’t struggle to snooze in economy like the rest of us. Unlike the flight attendants, who nap on bunk beds in small rest areas designated for crew, pilots have their own individual sleeping quarters, usually tucked away behind the cockpit. Here they can spend up to half of their time while on a long-haul journey, according to Business Insider. On most aircraft, the pilot’s bedroom is located above first class. On this Boeing 777, most passengers would be completely unaware the room existed as pilots access it by climbing hidden stairs. A British Airways flight attendant says: 'On the Boeing 747s it is all bunk beds and on the 777 it feels like you are in a coffin. 'They are cramped but you can make it comfortable as you get a blanket and a pillow. 'I always take my own pyjamas and I make a little bed up. I sometimes try to take pillows and blankets from business class if they aren't in use. 'It's very basic, some have TVs but they are tiny, smaller than iPad minis.' The rooms themselves differ according to the aircraft. While a little pokey, the standard pilot’s private sleeping quarters features two business class seats and comfy lie-flat beds to ensure they get a good night’s kip before returning to duty. There are also curtains to help drown out the sound of the plane and a phone should the resting pilot be needed. Depending on the plane, some come equipped with a sink or bathroom, so they don’t have to queue up down the aisle like the rest of us. Some pilot bedrooms even have a TV and Singapore Airlines treat their captains with satin pillows. Not all planes have these private pilot bedrooms with some having to make do with a simple area cordoned off by a curtain in business class. While this temporary paralysis happens to everyone, there are a few people who have a disorder called sleep paralysis, in which the paralysis lasts a few minutes after waking. It isn't dangerous but understandably it's a bit scary for those who experience it. The number of sleep paralysis episodes a person has can be reduced by getting sufficient sleep and reducing stress. 2. You Fart Easier.... Another Unknown Facts that you may not know When you're sleeping, your body relaxes and muscles loosen up. Unfortunately, this applies to your anal sphincter muscles, too. This makes it easier for gas to pass. That might make you a bit self-conscious the next time you're about to go to bed with your significant other. But, luckily our sense of smell is gone while we're asleep! 3. You Think You're Falling A common, but weird, thing that happens to 70% of people is the feeling of falling just before going to sleep or waking up. Also known as hynic jerks, the sleep disturbance may be caused by remaining daytime energy that bursts out in random movements. Alternatively, they may be caused by confusion of the brain, in which the brain thinks you're falling since your muscles are relaxing and responds by causing them to tense, so as to "catch yourself."
