A Look at the Amway Center - Orlando Magic - Short and Hat

03:32
We got press passes into the brand spankin' new Amway Center. We took so many pictures and videos of the game, the team (including soon to be MVP, Dwight Howard) and the facility that Seth probably has a good two hours of solid footage to wade through to edit our video update. The video will be up soon. Officially, we are sports fans! Basketball is oh-so much more interesting to watch than football (I've tried to like football for years--I pretty much only watch the Superbowl...the commercials). The press passes allowed us to go pretty much anywhere we wanted. After everyone had left for the night, we had the place to ourselves, so we ran around like crazies trying to capture everything we could about the building. The Amway Center is brand new and is the most technologically advanced building in the NBA. The jumbo-tron is also the largest in the NBA, and all around the building, nearly on every wall, a high-def LED screen keeps you plugged into the game. There are restaurants and bars and clubs--pretty much anything you would need (and then some) for a good time.

Chicago Bulls - Orlando Magic | 1996 Playoffs | ECF Game 4: Jordan seals the sweep

10:18
His partners in the ratings game desperately wanted to salvage some pride on their home floor, but Michael Jordan was even more determined to have at least three days off. He was willing to work every angle, possible and impossible, to secure them. The baseline. The wing. Straight on from 15 feet. Off one foot or off the glass, he kept hitting net and he kept fading away -- farther and farther -- until Anfernee Hardaway, Shaquille O'Neal and their once-potent basketball team resembled minuscule blips from high atop the ridge. The Chicago Bulls were much closer to the pinnacle than the Orlando Magic was today because Jordan reached the climax of a yearlong vindication process by backpacking his team to a 106-101 victory in Game 4 and a sweep of the Eastern Conference finals. "Judging from the look in Michael's eyes, we could have rode him all day today," forward Scottie Pippen said. "I know I rode him. We all did. What's new?" With a menacing glare attached to nearly every basket he made, Jordan erupted for 45 points, wagged his tongue, kicked up his left foot ever so slightly and walked out of Orlando Arena with a Cuban cigar tucked snugly in his blazer pocket. He made 16 of 23 shots and 10 of 14 free throws and performed the same riveting theater on the floor that carried Chicago to its last finals, in 1993, the last time the Bulls were this close to a championship. They overcame a 56-47 halftime deficit in the final seconds of the third quarter and then let Jordan do most of the sweeping up in the final quarter. He had 10 points in the final 12 minutes, including two demoralizing jumpers that effectively ended the Magic's season. The Bulls, who have lost once since the regular season ended, will not play again until at least Friday. "We might not even practice for two straight days," Jordan said, smiling. O'Neal and Hardaway each finished with 28 points and played spectacularly at times for Orlando, which knocked off Chicago in six games last season in the conference semifinals. But O'Neal had only 2 points in the fourth quarter and Hardaway was corralled every time he dribbled around the perimeter in the final minutes. The clincher came with 4 minutes 40 seconds left and Orlando trying to keep its season alive by swarming the basketball. Suddenly a cross-court pass from Pippen materialized in Jordan's hands while he was a few steps from the left baseline. He was as wide open as Madison Square Garden in June. Jordan, who showed no ill effects after rolling his ankle in the final minutes of Game 3 but was queasy enough from an upset stomach this morning that he needed medication, paused to square his feet. He cruelly let Hardaway get within a few feet and then pulled the trigger. As the ball passed through the net, he kicked his right foot up slightly, dangling it there in front of the Magic bench. The lead returned to 10 points, at 95-85. Jordan added a heartless 14-footer with 1:38 remaining, putting Chicago ahead, 100-91. The Magic became the first team since Detroit, in 1991, to be swept in the conference finals, and the same player who tutored the kiddie corps from Orlando today sent the Bad Boys home five years ago. "Jordan is Jordan," O'Neal said. "That's why he's the best player in the world." Magic Coach Brian Hill said, "We just couldn't overcome what he did today, quite honestly." The damage in this series actually occurred early on, with Chicago's blowout in Game 1 and its comeback from 18 points down in the third quarter in Game 2. "It's really sickening because we are a better team than what we displayed," Hardaway said. To fully recover from this demonstrative sweep might take Orlando 12 months, which would only be fair. Last May, Jordan was relearning the game. He was mortal. And Grant, the former Bull, was pumping his fist as the Magic knocked off Chicago in Game 6 at the United Center. The new kids on the NBA block had suddenly replaced the old guard. A few days later, Jordan went back to the gym. "I think it not only says something about Michael as a player, but also as a person," said Steve Kerr, the Bulls' reserve guard. "He started this quest 12 months ago, working out over the summer with this one singular goal in mind: Getting back to the finals and doing what he could to make his team better than the Magic's. Mission accomplished." The Bulls will rest Tuesday. "Any time you can take a team out and get some days off, it's nice," Pippen said. "I'm sure that motivated Michael, too." In the post-season, that is called getting time off for good behavior. Jordan was on his best behavior today. He was in such a good mood, he decided to give Shaq and Penny the whole summer off.

Mario Hezonja Is Finally BALLING for the Orlando Magic! Knicks Free Agent Target?

10:56
Mario Hezonja was one of the most polarising players in his draft class just three years ago, European Kobe he was called, and many thought the six foot eight wing would dominate the NBA for years to come. But despite stories of his unabashed confidence and bravado, Mario Hezonja has looked incredibly up and down and at times without confidence in the NBA. As a result, the Orlando Magic declined his fourth year team option this off season, an incredible rare occurrence for players drafted in the top 5. And for good reason, young players take time to develop, and sometimes you need the full four years to judge a draft pick. And Mario is making the Magic pay for yet another poor decision, over the second half of the season he has looked like an incredibly promising young player once again. Dunking, draining threes, playing decent defence, passing, and reboudning, Hezonja looks all over the court over the last two months. But is this the play of a kid who knows he is in a contract year? Or is European Kobe finally making his appearance in the NBA and proving his worth of a top five pick? This video will take a look at these questions and dive into the history of Hezonja, where he is from, and some of the stories behind his bizarre bravado. Mario was born and raised in Croatia, and would stay there until 2012 when he would join Barcelona’s basketball team as a professional. His first foray into professional basketball would take longer than other European prodigies such as Luka Doncic and Ricky Rubio. But when Hezonja cracked the first team rotation in the 2014-2015 Euroleague season, he announced his arrival to the basketball world. He would still come off the bench, but would play 16 minutes a game and score almost 8 points a game whilst shooting 38.2% from deep. And doing all of this in the second best basketball league in the entire world. NBA Scouts and fans really began to take notice, and the hype really began when he went 8 for 8 from the three point line in a Spanish league game.

Vince Carter traded to Orlando Magic

01:13
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., June 25,2009 (AP) -- Vince Carter is going home to Orlando, and to the Eastern Conference champion Magic. On a draft day when Cleveland made the biggest splash by trading for the Suns' Shaquille O'Neal, Orlando made a blockbuster move of its own in acquiring the Nets' Carter, an eight-time NBA All Star who grew up in Daytona Beach and lives in Orlando. New Jersey also dealt forward Ryan Anderson to the Magic, who sent the Nets three players in return: Point guard Rafer Alston, shooting guard Courtney Lee and power forward Tony Battie. The trade gives the Magic another star in a lineup that already includes Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis. The deal might also convince Hedo Turkoglu, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent on July 1, to remain with the Magic. Orlando is hoping Carter, who has averaged 23.5 points over a 10-year pro career, will provide center Dwight Howard with a perimeter scorer who can create his own shot -- something they lacked in losing the NBA finals to the Los Angeles Lakers. It's also an indication the Magic believe their time is now. "Vince gives us a veteran, go-to scoring presence, especially at the end of games," Orlando general manager Otis Smith said in a statement. "Our goal remains the same -- to win a championship. Any time you can add an All-Star to help you reach your goals, you have to do it." Carter found out about the trade at his basketball camp, adding he thought it was a joke at first. "Every player hopes for an opportunity like this, to just once compete for an NBA championship," Carter said. "This a dream come true for me. Now I have a chance to win a championship." The deal shows the Nets are planning for free agency before the 2010-11 season, when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire can test the market. The trade gives New Jersey some $18 million in salary cap relief for the 2010-11 coming out season. "I think everyone here is sad because everybody liked Vince," Nets president Rod Thorn said Thursday night. "But the reality of the situation is we have to do what is best for our franchise and move on from there." Thorn admitted the Nets might take a step back in the wake of the trade, but he noted he really likes Lee. "If you are going to trade a player of Carter's caliber, you want to make sure you get a young talent who has a chance to be very good." Besides clearing cap space, the Nets get a solid backup for point guard Devin Harris in Alston and a talent who showed flashes of stardom in Lee. Lee, a rookie from Western Kentucky last season, was a late first-round pick in 2008 and turned out to be one of the Magic's few bright spots in recent drafts. Lee started 42 games and was a solid contributor for the Magic last season, averaging 8.4 points per game. But the Magic were willing to give up Lee to acquire Carter and clear payroll. "I thought they liked Courtney Lee, especially after the way he played in the finals," Miami forward Michael Beasley said at the Heat draft party. "So, so unexpected. ... Vince Carter, great player. I think him and Dwight Howard can do great things together. Vince Carter is a lot like Hedo Turkoglu, better in some sense. I think they can do great things together." With Jameer Nelson already named the starting point guard for next season, the team was looking to move Alston -- and his $5.25 million contract that ends after next season. Alston was acquired at the trade deadline from the Houston Rockets after Nelson suffered what was then called a season-ending shoulder surgery. Alston's acquisition largely saved the Magic's season, but when Nelson was able to return for the finals, Alston complained about his minutes and the point guards never could find their rhythm. The Magic's biggest cost-cutting move is parting ways with the 33-year-old Battie, who will make $6.2 million next season in the final year of his contract. Carter's departure ends the era of the Nets' Big Three. Point guard Jason Kidd was traded to Dallas early in 2008 and Richard Jefferson was dealt to Milwaukee on draft day a year ago for Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons. Carter, who was acquired from Toronto in December 2004, carried most of the offensive load for New Jersey last season, along with Harris and rookie center Brook Lopez. Anderson, a 6-foot-10 forward who was the 21st pick overall in last year's draft, started 30 games and averaged 7.4 points and 4.7 rebounds. A few hours after trading Carter, the Nets used the 11th pick in the draft to select Terrence Williams, a versatile 6-foot-6 small forward from Louisville.

2018-19 NBA Season Preview: Orlando Magic: Aaron Gordon | Evan Fournier | Mo Bamba

06:08
2018-19 NBA Season Preview: Orlando Magic: Aaron Gordon | Evan Fournier | Mo Bamba The NBA season is upon us. The Warriors has won 3 of the last 4 NBA championships and attempting a 3 peat for the first time. It was another wild offseason, which included stars like LeBron James, DeMarcus Cousins and Kawhi Leonard changed teams. At this point, it'll be a shock if a star doesn't change teams in the offseason. All the dust has settled. The talk has been talked and will continue. Now, teams will put it all on the court night after night to play things out. There are always interesting questions to ask when going into a new NBA Season. Which players will elevate their game and be selected to their first game? Which star will win their first ring? Will there be a star who starts to take a step back? Seems like a good time for a thorough and detailed NBA season Preview and it continues with the Orlando Magic who have a lot of young talent which includes Aaron Gordon, Jonathan Isaac, and Mo Bamba. Toronto Raptors vs Orlando Magic Nov.7/07

05:58
Thanks to a newfound focus on toughness and togetherness, the Orlando Magic are off to a perfect start away from home. Hedo Turkoglu had 24 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, Rashard Lewis scored 24 points, and the Magic beat the Toronto Raptors 105-96 on Wednesday night to earn their third straight road victory. Keith Bogans had 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Dwight Howard added 17 points and nine rebounds for Orlando, which won at Washington on Saturday and beat Minnesota on Tuesday. "Any time you can get road wins is good,'' Orlando guard Jameer Nelson said. "You're always going to be able to protect your home court because you've got your fans around you. When you come up to a hostile environment like Toronto, New York or Minnesota, you've got to stick together. Everybody who's on that bench and everybody on the court has got to stick together.'' One night after he failed to make a field goal for just the second time in his NBA career, Toronto's Chris Bosh scored 26 points, going 6-for-15 from the floor and making all 14 of his free throw attempts. Bosh also had 10 rebounds. Andrea Bargnani had 16 points for Toronto, while T.J. Ford had 12 points and eight assists. Toronto has lost three straight after winning its opening two games of the season. "We have to do a better job of concentrating on getting to the bucket,'' Bosh said. "We're settling for a lot of jump shots and everybody on the team is falling victim to that.'' A 3-pointer by Bargnani with 3:56 left in the fourth quarter gave Toronto its first lead of the game at 92-91. Orlando responded with eight straight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Lewis and Nelson and a driving layup by Nelson to take a 99-92 edge with 2:23 remaining. "Last year, when somebody made a big run at the end of the game, we kind of just folded over,'' Howard said. "In the last two games, teams have been making big pushes at the end of the game and we've held our ground. We didn't get mad or frustrated at each other. We went out there and tried to do the best job we can on defense.'' Nelson finished with 10 points and six assists for the Magic, who had all five starters reach double figures in scoring. "I like the way our team is responding,'' Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "Of course, I'd like it better if we'd just win by 15, but I like the way our team is responding. That's the way you're going to have to play to win games on the road in this league. I'm very, very pleased with them right now.'' Orlando wraps up its road trip at New York on Friday. "We've got one more test coming up Friday,'' Nelson said. "We have to take care of business.'' Howard said the Magic know they need to do better than the 15-26 road record they posted last season. "In order for us to become a great team and get respect around the league, we've got to win these games on the road,'' Howard said. "We've been doing an awesome job so far of just concentrating. We trying to mature as a team and every game is a stepping stone for us.'' Turkoglu played 45 minutes, including the entire second half, despite a tender ankle. Van Gundy said it was hard to take him out because of foul trouble to Lewis and Howard. "It was hurting before the game, but I always tell myself when I'm on the court it means I've got enough,'' Turkoglu said. "I didn't want think about it too much, let it get into my head. I just played through it. I know there's going to be a day off tomorrow. I'll get it treated and feel a bit better on Friday.'' Nelson returned to the starting lineup after sitting out Tuesday's game in Minnesota with a slight concussion, the result of an inadvertent elbow to the head during practice on Monday. He was cleared to play Wednesday night after riding an exercise bike during the morning shootaround, and said he felt no ill-effects. "The doctors did a good job getting me ready to play and being cautious,'' Nelson said. "I appreciate those guys being cautious and just allowing me to get back to being healthy.'' Orlando led 52-47 at the half. Notes: NBA executive VP of basketball operations Stu Jackson attended the game. ... Toronto activated forward Maceo Baston before the game and placed forward Jamario Moon on the inactive list.

1990/91 (December 30) Denver Nuggets@Orlando Magic - Scott Skiles sets record with 30 assists!

01:31:56
http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/199012300ORL.html It didn’t take him long on Dec. 30 to realize that the track meet against defense-less Denver would be unlike other game he had ever played in his career. ``It was a perfect storm,’’ Skiles recalled. ``I knew absolutely going in that it was going to be a high assist game as long as we could make shots. You never know sometimes if that’s going to happen, but we had so many fast breaks and (Denver) just literally would in-bound the ball, take three or four dribbles and then shot a three for a good portion of the game. If they had been making them then we’d be taking the ball out of the net and the whole thing doesn’t happen.’’ Orlando was all over Denver on Dec. 30, 1990, racing to a 35-23 lead after one quarter. And by the time Skiles handed out his 14th assist, Orlando had a commanding 72-49 advantage at intermission. ``That night, it was just a combination of their style of play, coupled with guys on my team knocking down shots, making some difficult ones, hitting the easy ones and I just kind of fell into it,’’ Skiles said. As the Magic’s lead swelled to 110-80 by the end of the third quarter, Skiles’ assist total was hitting rarified air. He broke the 20-assist barrier for the first time as a NBA player early in the fourth quarter and started to draw close to the previous record of 29 assists set by New Jersey Nets’ guard Kevin Porter in 1978. Said Hill, who had a good vantage point from his seat on the Magic bench as an assistant coach: ``There were a lot of quick shots and long rebounds which ended up in fast breaks and it was like watching your team do a three-on-two and two-on-one fast break drill in practice. And with Scott handling the ball in the middle of the break, there weren’t too many better than him.’’ The funny thing is that Skiles had no idea he was even close to the record. And he likely could have sent his assist total soaring into the mid-30s had he not shot the ball so often. Not only did he end up scoring 22 points that night, but 13 of them came in the fourth quarter as the Magic were en route to a record-setting 155-116 victory. (For the record, Skiles has been involved in the two highest scoring games in Magic history – once as a player (Dec. 30, 1990) and once as a head coach (Oct. 30, 2015)). ``The impression is if you are going to get 30 assists, you are just giving it up every time, but he was scoring as well,’’ raved Turner, referring to Skiles’ 22 points, six rebounds and two steals to go with the 30 assists. Added Skiles: ``I was just playing the game and that’s not my style anyway to go for any sort of records. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even know until they made the announcement with 7-8 minutes to go in the game that I had tied (the NBA record). I was already talking to (then-Magic head coach) Matty (Goukas) about coming out of the game. He told me, `You’ve got one more (assist) to get the record.’ Then, we couldn’t make a shot!’’ Jerry ``Ice’’ Reynolds was Orlando’s leading scorer that night with 27 points despite coming off the bench. Many of those points came in the lopsided 45-point fourth quarter and his dunk – off a no-look feed from Skiles – resulted in the 29th assist with 6:57 remaining. Like Skiles, Reynolds was oblivious to the fact that history was being written and he repeatedly dribbled upon receiving a Skiles’ pass late in the game – effectively killing the chances of a 30th assist. ``We all knew what was going on, but for some reason Jerry seemed to be oblivious to it,’’ Turner said with a laugh. ``So it became, `Ice, just shoot it and don’t dribble it.’ And it ended up Jerry was the guy who made the jump shot.’’ Finally, Reynolds realized why the 15,077 in attendance were cheering every time Skiles touched the ball in that fourth quarter. With 25 seconds to play – and Skiles in his 44th minute on the floor – he passed to Reynolds, who didn’t hesitate in drilling a jumper from the wing for the record-setter. ``I sat at midcourt and the play happened to my left. (Reynolds) shot it from the left wing from just inside the 3-point line, so I had a direct line with my view to the basket,’’ recalled then radio play-by-play man David Steele, who has called Magic games on radio and television for 27 seasons. ``(Reynolds) shot it with a little sideways spin on it. When it leaves a shooter’s hands there’s a split-second when you’ve watched so much basketball and you think, `Well, this has no shot (of going in).’ Well, this one had no shot of going in,’’ Steele added. ``But it’s almost like a Devine force steered it from right to left and into the basket. The shot that finally did it, had no chance of going in, but it did.’’ http://www.nba.com/magic/news/remembering-scott-skiles-30-assist-game-25-years-later/

Chicago Bulls - Orlando Magic | 1996 Playoffs | ECF Game 2: The Great Escape

10:59
In a city that fully believes a championship parade permit is nothing more than paperwork with a date to be filled in, the Chicago Bulls took a loud, convincing step toward the NBA finals tonight. They overcame an 18-point second-half deficit to defeat Orlando, 93-88, and take a 2-0 lead in the four-of-seven-game Eastern Conference finals. With a pressing defensive effort that was disciplined and ferocious all at once, the Bulls added one more remarkable achievement to a record-breaking season. In tonight's magic act, the Bulls made a dominant player disappear. Shaquille O'Neal was held to 10 points and 5 rebounds in the second half, including a meaningless dunk with 5 seconds to play, after powering his way to 26 points and 11 rebounds before halftime. Surprised by Chicago double-teams in the second half, and handicapped by a backcourt that was prevented from getting him the ball nearly enough down the stretch, O'Neal produced only three shots in the fourth quarter. He made all three, but he could not make enough. Michael Jordan scored 35 points (on 9-for-21 shooting, along with 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and a block), 25 in the second half, after a 3-for-10 first-half effort that made his pre-game acceptance of the league's most valuable player award seem like a cruel joke. But Jordan's defensive play was just as decisive on a night when he was forced to deal with cramps in the final minutes. "It's a crucial time of the game," Jordan said. "What am I supposed to do? Sit down?" Scottie Pippen scored 17 points (7-for-19) with 10 rebounds and 9 assists, and Dennis Rodman -- the one option often left free in Orlando's defensive approach -- added 15 points with 12 rebounds. By the end, the Bulls handed Orlando a defeat that may be even more demoralizing than the 38-point wipeout in Game 1. "I think we broke their hearts a little bit," said Bill Wennington, the backup Bull center. Just when the Magic seemed capable of overcoming the loss of Horace Grant with his injured left elbow, the Bulls snatched away a game that created a difficult uphill climb for Orlando. In the 243 previous seven-game series in NBA history, only seven teams have won after losing the first two. "We found a weakness," Jordan remembered, "and we said, 'Let's attack this weakness. Let's keep the pressure on until they can prove that they can stop, change or they can alter,' and they never did." As the Magic heads back to Orlando Arena for Game 3 on Saturday, with the memory of six fourth-quarter turnovers here tonight, the task will be to find a reason to believe that a second consecutive Eastern championship is still somewhere within their reach. The offensive breakdown tonight went far beyond the shooting problems that led to the loss in Game 1. This time, particularly with the game on the line in the final minutes, the Magic was often incapable of even creating a shot. The four Magic leaders in assists this season -- Anfernee Hardaway, Brian Shaw, Dennis Scott and Nick Anderson -- produced a total of two assists in the second half. "We just couldn't get into any kind of offense," Hardaway said, "and they came back and played a great game. There at the end when they were making their run, they were putting pressure on the ball and fronting Shaquille. It just so happened we couldn't get the ball in at that time." It just so happened that the Magic, which had been led by O'Neal's power and mobility throughout an impressive first half, did not appear anywhere close to a team capable of reaching the finals again. "They were all over the place," said Jon Koncak, who started in place of Grant. "We have some of the best guards in the game, but we played into their hands. We never got the ball out of the double-team. The forwards had the ball too much. We have very capable guys, but when they turned it up, we could not recover."

Atlanta Hawks vs Orlando Magic GAME 1 Recap 2011

04:53
http://bit.ly/gIDhfe - Officially Licensed NBA Jerseys Hawks-Magic notebook By Nada Taha, for NBA.com Posted Saturday April 16, 2011 11:51PM THE FACTS: Dwight Howard's quick and quiet press conference spoke volumes. The frustration of losing 103-93 in Game 1 of the first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks Saturday night despite his 46 points and 19 rebounds was evident. What wasn't as clear to him, any of his teammates or even head coach Stan Van Gundy was what they were going to do differently on the offensive end to counter Atlanta head coach Larry Drew's decision not to double Howard. Atlanta's one-on-one defense allowed Howard to roam wildly as the rest of the Magic players, excluding Jameer Nelson, struggled to get into the double digits. The problem, Van Gundy said, was on the defensive end of the court, where Joe Johnson, Jamal Crawford and Al Horford were left to score 25, 23 and 16, respectively. QUOTABLE: "We knew that coming into this game it was going to be a tough job for our bigs to try and defend Dwight down low. I knew he would come out aggressive. I knew he would come out in attack mode and he had a heck of a first half." -- Drew THE STAT: Six of the nine Magic players that played the most minutes in the Hawks-Magic series last year are no longer on the team. (Matt Barnes, Marcin Gortat, Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, Mickael Pietrus, and Jason Williams) TURNING POINT: It didn't take long for Drew to realize Howard was going to have a monstrous game, but instead of taking the obvious route, he decided not to make a defensive adjustment, leaving Dwight to rack up 46 points, but subsequently shutting down the Magic's perimeter players -- Orlando was 27.3 percent from beyond the arc. QUOTABLE II: "If all five of their guys are going to shoot 50 percent or better and score what they scored, we're not going to beat them. Our guys have to know that and that's the way it is. If we can't get them under control a little bit at the other end, we've got no chance to win." -- Van Gundy HOT: Not only did Dwight's 46 points set his career-high for points in a playoff game, he also became the Magic's all-time leader in postseason scoring, tied Tracy McGrady for a franchise playoff record for points in a game and set the franchise playoff record for points in a half with 31. NOT: The rest of the Orlando Magic team -- excluding Nelson, who contributed 27 points to the losing effort. No other player on the team scored more than 6 points, and Brandon Bass and Ryan Anderson both finished the game without putting a point in their stat line. NOTABLE: J.J. Redick returned to the Magic lineup after missing 17 regular-season games because of a lower abdominal strain. He played 18 minutes, scored 4 points and grabbed 3 boards in his return. UP NEXT: Game 2 is 7:30 p.m. ET Tuesday at the Amway Center in Orlando.

Kyrie Irving 24pts vs. Orlando Magic HD Highlight *2013.02.08

02:31
Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers are playing better and having fun. Things are quite different for the Orlando Magic. Irving scored 24 points and Cleveland defeated Orlando 119-108 on Friday night, sending the Magic to their 12th straight loss. The Cavaliers, who tied a season high with their third straight victory, have won six of eight and are 11-11 since Dec. 22. Irving thinks the team's confidence has reached a season high. "It's fun playing out there," he said. "It's fun being with all these guys every single day, simply put." After watching the Cavaliers finish last season at 21-45 and begin this season with a 6-23 record, Irving is embracing Cleveland's recent success. "I don't really think about those dark days," Irving said. "I don't remember them." Orlando has seen plenty of dark days recently. The Magic have lost 23 of 25 and haven't won since Jan. 16. The latest defeat tied them with Washington for the second-longest losing streak of the season in the NBA. "Unfortunately, I'm not a psychic, so I can't predict the future, but we do continue to grow daily," said rookie forward Andrew Nicholson, who scored 21 points. "We'll definitely be better two or three years from now, if not two or three weeks from now." Nikola Vucevic scored a career-high 25 points for Orlando while Arron Afflalo, playing for the first time since Jan. 27, added 23 points, but that wasn't enough for the Magic. Marreese Speights scored 18 points and Tristan Thompson added 16 for Cleveland, which scored 13 straight points in a stretch that began late in the third period to take control of the game. The Cavaliers scored the last eight points of the third quarter to go ahead 85-80. A basket by Shaun Livingston and a 3-pointer by Wayne Ellington put Cleveland ahead 90-80 early in the fourth. The Cavaliers scored 34 points in the final period. Cleveland is 6-2 since acquiring Speights and Ellington from Memphis on Jan. 22. The added depth has played a key role in the winning ways. "It makes my job easier," Irving said. "I can come out there and play my game. Our bench is doing a great job keeping the lead." "We're making steps in the right direction," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. "We're playing good basketball right now, but we can play better." Speights, who was 12 for 12 at the foul line, scored 12 points in the stretch that helped Cleveland take over. The win snapped Cleveland's 10-game losing streak against Orlando. The Cavaliers hadn't beaten the Magic since a 115-106 win on Feb. 11, 2010. Cleveland fell 108-104 in Orlando in November, a game Irving missed with a broken finger. Cleveland's star point guard, who will compete in the All-Star game, the 3-point contest and the Rising Stars Challenge next weekend in Houston, scored seven points in the fourth quarter.
