It was true, too. She had a little thin face and a little thin body, thin light hair and a sour expression. Her hair was yellow, and her face was yellow because she had been born in India and had always been ill in one way or another. Her father had held a position under the English Government and had always been busy and ill himself, and her mother had been a great beauty who cared only to go to parties and amuse herself with gay people. She had not wanted a little girl at all, and when Mary was born she handed her over to the care of an Ayah, who was made to understand that if she wished to please the Mem Sahib she must keep the child out of sight as much as possible.." ...CONTINUED... The Secret Garden | Learning English through stories

43:02
he Secret Garden (1909) is one of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s most popular novels. The book tells the story of Mary Lennox, a spoiled, contrary, solitary child raised in India but sent to live in her uncle’s manor in Yorkshire after her parents' death. She is left to herself by her uncle, Mr. Craven, who travels often to escape the memory of his deceased wife. The only person who has time for Mary is her chambermaid, Martha. It is Martha who tells Mary about Mrs. Craven's walled garden, which has been closed and locked since her death. Mary becomes intrigued by the prospect of the forgotten garden, and her quest to find out the garden's secrets leads her to discover other secrets hidden in the manor. These discoveries combined with the unlikely friendships she makes along the way help Mary come out of her shell and find new fascination with the world around her. "As a child, I loved sitting on my grandfather's lap while he read me stories. I remember most of them even though I am now a grandparent, too! As a child, I was blissfully unaware that, as I listened to the stories, I was also learning new words and ways in which those new words combined to communicate ideas and life lessons. A good story encourages us to turn the next page and read more. We want to find out what happens next and what the main characters do and what they say to each other. We may feel excited, sad, afraid, angry or really happy. This is because the experience of reading or listening to a story is much more likely to make us 'feel' that we are part of the story, too. Just like in our 'real' lives, we might love or hate different characters in the story. Perhaps we recognise ourselves or others in some of them. Perhaps we have similar problems. Because of this natural empathy with the characters, our brains process the reading of stories differently from the way we read factual information. Our brains don't always recognise the difference between an imagined situation and a real one so the characters become 'alive' to us. What they say and do is therefore more meaningful. This is why the words and structures that relate a story's events, descriptions and conversations are processed in this deeper way. In fact, cultures all around the world have always used storytelling to pass knowledge from one generation to another. Our ancestors understood very well that this was the best way to make sure our histories and information about how to relate to others and to our world was not only understood, but remembered too. (Notice that the word 'history' contains the word 'story' – this is not a coincidence!) Encouraging your child to read or listen to stories should therefore help them to learn a second language in a way that is not only fun, but memorable. Let's take a quick look at learning vocabulary within a factual text or within a story. Imagine the readers are eight-year-olds interested in animals. In your opinion, are they more likely to remember AND want to continue reading the first or second text?" (http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/learn...) Mary is then taken to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, a lonely man who lives in a large mansion near a moor and travels often. Mary is instructed to stay in her room by the headmistress, Mrs. Medlock. Mary meets Martha, a servant girl with a thick Yorkshire accent. Mary expects that Martha will do everything for her, but Martha tells her that she has to learn to do things by herself. Mary is bored of the mansion since there is no one around. She explores the surrounding gardens and discovers a secret garden with no entrance. She learns that her uncle used to go there often with his wife, but since her death many years ago, he’s locked it up, buried the key, and doesn’t allow anyone to talk about it. Mary befriends a red robin, who leads her to a buried key. Mary and Martha become friends as they learn more about each other. Martha even buys Mary a jump rope as a gift. As Mary is skipping rope, the robin leads her to the hidden door to the secret garden and Mary uses the key to enter the garden. Mary discovers that the garden is wild and unkept, but there are still signs of life. She asks a groundskeeper, Ben Weatherstaff, about tools and gardening practices so she can work in the garden in secret. Mary buys gardening tools through Dickon, Martha’s brother, who loves animals and knows a lot about nature and the moor. Dickon and Mary talk and Mary grows to admire Dickon for his closeness to nature and free spirit. Mary opens up about the secret garden to Dickon and soon they both start working the ground together. One night, Mary hears some crying and she investigates the source. She discovers a young boy named Colin, Mr. Craven’s son and her cousin. Colin is afraid that he’s growing a hump on his back and that he’ll die. And because he’s believed this lie his entire life, he is afraid to go outside and talk to people. Mary and Colin get along and Colin enjoys her company. They talk often, however, Colin gets jealous of Mary spending time with Dickon and they have a fight. Mary leaves upset and later yells at Colin, which gets him to stop feeling sorry for himself. Mary and Dickon plan on taking Colin to the secret garden and Colin grows excited. Colin is wheeled out into the garden and is amazed by the plants and open air. However, Ben sees the children in the garden and yells at them. Colin, being the head of the house, tells Ben that they must not be disturbed in the garden and that Ben must now keep it a secret. Over time, Colin goes to the garden with Mary and Dickon, and he gets stronger and more healthy. He practices walking out of his wheelchair and is excited to show his father when he returns. In the end, Mr. Craven returns home and sees Colin running and healthy. She is best known for the three children's novels Little Lord Fauntleroy (published in 1885–1886), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911). Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in Cheetham, Manchester, England. After her father died in 1852, the family fell on straitened circumstances and in 1865 emigrated to the United States, settling in Jefferson City, Tennessee. There Frances began writing to help earn money for the family, publishing stories in magazines from the age of 19. In 1870, her mother died, and in 1872 Frances married Swan Burnett, who became a medical doctor. The Burnetts lived for two years in Paris, where their two sons were born, before returning to the United States to live in Washington, D.C. Burnett then began to write novels, the first of which (That Lass o' Lowrie's), was published to good reviews. Little Lord Fauntleroy was published in 1886 and made her a popular writer of children's fiction, although her romantic adult novels written in the 1890s were also popular. She wrote and helped to produce stage versions of Little Lord Fauntleroy and A Little Princess. Burnett enjoyed socializing and lived a lavish lifestyle. Beginning in the 1880s, she began to travel to England frequently and in the 1890s bought a home there, where she wrote The Secret Garden. Her oldest son, Lionel, died of tuberculosis in 1890, which caused a relapse of the depression she had struggled with for much of her life. She divorced Swan Burnett in 1898, married Stephen Townsend in 1900, and divorced him in 1902. A few years later she settled in Nassau County, Long Island, where she died in 1924 and is buried in Roslyn Cemetery. In 1936 a memorial sculpture by Bessie Potter Vonnoh was erected in her honour in Central Park's Conservatory Garden. The statue depicts her two famous Secret Garden characters, Mary and Dickon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Hodgson_Burnett Photo Image Credit: http://ia800209.us.archive.org/9/items/LibrivoxCdCoverArt8/Secret_Garden_1105.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Frances_Burnett.jpg https://pixabay.com/en/fantasy-light-tunnel-design-magic-2022973/ Music Credit: "Relent" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Tag: Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden, British-American, novelist, playwright, children's novels, Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Little Princess, Mary Lennox, Dickon, Librivox, recording, Karen Savage, public, domain, classic, inspirational, spiritual, growth, awareness, enlightenment, audiobook, video

Welcome to The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, published in 1911 and now being read to you by myself, Steven Garnett. Thank you for listening! Please do remember to Like, Comment, & Share the video, and SUBSCRIBE! Thank you! ********************************************************************* 📣 More about this project - Well this certainly was a labour of love... This reading was recorded over the course of the last 12 months, shared chapter by chapter on my channel and then compiled, remastered and published as a complete audiobook. Originally, inspired by feedback from a couple of my wonderful Fox Fans over on Patreon, and by my super listeners here on YT, this started as a series I termed 'Raw Reading'. The idea was to produce a less polished, more authentic "being read to" experience, fluttering page turning and all, rather than the cleaner, more "professional" style that is usual and that I more commonly aim for. Editing was light, the pace unhurried, and the effect, I hope, soothing. However, as time passed and I became more confident both as a narrator and producer, the product became increasingly polished, although hopefully without losing any of its charm. You may also be able to hear that my equipment also improves as the story progresses. Moreover, once the last of the individual chapters were published and I began to compile this complete version, I couldn't resist giving the whole recording a "remaster"; further cleaning up the audio, tightening the editing, and aiming for an audiobook that I am truly proud of, and will be for many years to come. I hope you enjoy it! ********************************************************************* ✍ So, as always I would be delighted to read your thoughts about the piece, in terms of style and what it brings to you. Let this reading of a very famous adventure guide you into a peaceful sleep, keep you company on a daily commute, or bring you peace at any time of the day or night. ********************************************************************* 📢 Support, Request, Follow, Join, Contact, Access More Content on: 🏆PATREON https://www.patreon.com/stevengarnett 👾TWITCH https://www.twitch.tv/redfoxvoice 👍FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/RedFoxVoiceFans/ 🎮DISCORD https://discord.gg/GdDeEz4 ⌨EMAIL [email protected] 👑PAYPAL https://paypal.me/pools/c/83embJXIWX or [email protected] 🎁New! - MERCHANDISE https://www.redbubble.com/people/RedFoxVoice ******************************************************************** 00:00:00 - Musical Introduction 00:00:37 - Chapter 1 - There Is No One Left 00:12:32 - Chapter 2 - Mistress Mary Quite Contrary 00:29:07 - Chapter 3 - Across the Moor 00:38:12 - Chapter 4 - Martha 01:09:27 - Chapter 5 - The Cry in the Corridor 01:23:20 - Chapter 6 - "There Was Someone Crying--There Was!" 01:37:28 - Chapter 7 - The Key of the Garden 01:50:20 - Chapter 8 - The Robin Who Showed the Way 02:06:44 - Chapter 9 - The Strangest House Anyone Ever Lived In 02:25:58 - Chapter 10 - Dickon 02:49:51 - Chapter 11 - The Nest of the Missel Thrush 03:06:46 - Chapter 12 - "Might I Have a Bit of Earth?" 03:25:39 - Chapter 13 - "I Am Colin" 03:57:02 - Chapter 14 - A Young Rajah 04:20:15 - Chapter 15 - Nest Building 04:44:35 - Chapter 16 - "I Won't!" After her father died in 1852, the family fell on straitened circumstances and in 1865 emigrated to the United States, settling in Jefferson City, Tennessee.

The Secret Garden (Film) Gennie James, Barret Oliver, Jadrien Steele, Michael Horden, Billie Whitelaw, Derek Jacobi, Colin Firth. The film, The Secret Garden, is based on the classic children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It is one of several versions of the classic on film. A young girl, living in India, is left orphaned when her parents die in a plague. She is sent back to England to live in a rural mansion, where she lives with friends of the family. Her guardian is a strange, distant man, Archibald Craven, who is an invalid. At first, Mary, taken care of the servants and housekeeper, is willful and uncooperative. Mary begins to make friends with a local boy who seems to understand nature and animals. And she begins to investigate the secrets of the house—strange noises in the night and the a secret closed-in garden. The noises, it turns out, come from the son of her guardian, who stays in bed and who believes that he is growing a "hump" on his back like his father's. Mary sees that the son, whose name is Colin, is spoiled, and she becomes a positive force, encouraging him to try things and break out of his invalid life. Mary, Dickon, and Colin begin to work clandestinely to restore the garden, with Colin gradually gaining strength and confidence as the garden returns to life. When Colin's father unexpectedly returns home, he finds his son miraculously restored to health. This version of Secret Garden features a young and very handsome Colin Firth for a total of 1 minute and 25 seconds of screen time--at the very end of the film. Colin Firth plays the adult Colin Craven.
