It's the Ashens Summertime Special featuring Mr. Paul Gannon - check out the Cheap Show podcast for more: https://www.thecheapshow.co.uk Look-in magazine! The junior TV listings mag that was actually more about comic strips and behind-the-scenes shenanigans. It's a time capsule of a particular slice of UK kid's culture of the time, which means we can sit about and get all misty-eyed talking about it for an hour before coming to the inevitable conclusion that it was mostly bobbins. Featuring Five Star! And lots of Tiffany! and Bobby Davro! and Cannon & Ball! and Nino from Splash, who I have no memory of whatsoever!

You and Your Family 1946 Look Magazine; Cowles Social Guidance Film

07:06
Psychology & Social Guidance Films playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_hX5wLdhf_KKDUI3dzMqPn1uZRXt_8dp more at http://quickfound.net 'When Mary's family refuses to let her go out on a date, what should she do? What happens when family members shirk their chores? How can Bill and his father agree on what time Bill should get home at night? These scenes are shown dramatically, then summarized, and each spectator is invited to join in the discussion. Great footage of typical 1940s to 1950s family in various typical family situations acting out three to four different possible outcomes to those situations. Girl is asked out on date but parents say she can’t go. Mother asks for help with dishes at dinner table and family makes excuses. Teenage son comes home late and wakes up father knocking over table with phone, and Father says he can’t go out for a week. ...old-fashioned phone of 1940s with rotary dial; phone rings, camera pans out and 1940s teenage girl answers phone. VS teenage girl on phone “Yes this is Marry. Oh hello Frank! What? You do! Well just a minute I better ask”; girl asks parents if she can go to dance out on lake with boy. Mother denies girl and Father confirms. Narrator asks “What should she do next?” Marry tells boy on phone she can’t go and sulks. Scene is repeated where girls asks parents if she can go but this time seeks a compromise to have him over after parents have said no; parents accept offer. Scene is reenacted again with girl asking parents this time she overreacts “I just knew it, no one in this family wants me to have any fun at all. I wish I were dead!” Fourth reenactment girl is denied however, she goes and whispers into phone that she will sneak out. ...family around dinner table. Mother asks for help with dishes. Daughter excuses herself by saying she has too much homework. Father says he has to read the paper. Oldest son says friends are waiting on him. Youngest son decides to help. ...wood pendulum driven grandfather clock which reads 12:45. ...teenage boy comes home late at night and trips over stool with phone on it and falls onto the staircase. Father wakes up and asks boy why he is home so late “What kept you son?” Four takes show boy give four different reactions by boy to father’s question. First, answer boy makes an excuse about friend getting hurt and Father says “Are you sure you’re telling the truth Bill?” Bill answers “Of course I am telling the truth. The trouble with this family is nobody ever believes me!” Second take Bill answers father’s question “Where were you Bill” “It’s none of your business, I’m not a kid anymore. I’m old enough to take care of myself. And beginning now that is just what I am going to do. And I’d like to see you or anyone else try and stop me”. Third take teenage boy apologizes and accepts punishment.' Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_(American_magazine) Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Look was a bi-weekly, general-interest magazine published in Des Moines, Iowa, from 1937 to 1971, with more of an emphasis on photographs than articles. The OFFICE and Look Magazine Model Search 2009 in association with Union Models

08:26
What do you get when a cool footwear retailer, a number one fashion weekly and one of the UKs leading modeling agencies join forces? A not-to-be missed modeling competition to find the face of OFFICE for 2009! Stepping out at the Paramount Bar on the 31st Floor, the venue for the Office and Look Magazine Model Search showdown, the skyline views over London complimented the stunning finalists and the sky-scraping heels scattered around the windowsills. Whittled down from over 4000 entrants, finalists from castings all around the country now had to strut their stuff to impress the panel of judges. It was truly a battle of the best, helped along by an entourage that would rival J Lo model coach James Jeanette helping to perfect the supermodel swagger, hair stylists from Toni & Guy on hand to style and spray hair into place and make-up artists from 'Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful' to create defined cheekbones. Mojitos sipped, models scrutinised and goodie bags grabbed, the winner, Sharam Sharam, was finally announced. It took three friends and two scouts to get her to even enter the competition, but first down the catwalk with such a great smile and flawless skin, she lead from the start.

The Jack Benny Program, Old Time Radio Show, 500430 Look Magazine Story

29:42
The Jack Benny Program, starring Jack Benny, is a radio-TV comedy series that ran for more than three decades and is generally regarded as a high-water mark in 20th-century American comedy. Jack Benny first appeared on radio as a guest of Ed Sullivan in 1932. He was then given his own show later that year, with Canada Dry Ginger Ale as a sponsor —The Canada Dry Ginger Ale Program, beginning May 2, 1932, on the NBC Blue Network and continuing there for six months until October 26, moving the show to CBS on October 30. With Ted Weems leading the band, Benny stayed on CBS until January 26, 1933. Arriving at NBC on March 17, Benny did The Chevrolet Program until April 1, 1934 with Frank Black leading the band. He continued with The General Tire Revue for the rest of that season, and in the fall of 1934, for General Foods as The Jell-O Program Starring Jack Benny (1934–42) and, when sales of Jell-O were affected by sugar rationing during World War II, The Grape Nuts Flakes Program Starring Jack Benny (Later the Grape Nuts and Grape Nuts Flakes Program) (1942–44). On October 1, 1944, the show became The Lucky Strike Program Starring Jack Benny, when American Tobacco's Lucky Strike cigarettes took over as his radio sponsor, through the mid-1950s. By that time, the practice of using the sponsor's name as the title began to fade. The show returned to CBS on January 2, 1949, as part of CBS president William S. Paley's notorious "raid" of NBC talent in 1948-49. There it stayed for the remainder of its radio run, which ended on May 22, 1955. CBS aired repeats of previous 1953-55 radio episodes from 1956 to 1958 as The Best of Benny for State Farm Insurance, who later sponsored his television program from 1960 through 1965. You and Your Friends 1946 Look Magazine; Cowles Social Guidance Film

07:52
Psychology & Social Guidance Films playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_hX5wLdhf_KKDUI3dzMqPn1uZRXt_8dp more at http://quickfound.net '"Here we are at a nice, friendly party. Watch carefully everything the people at this party do and say, then ask yourself, 'would I rate them plus or minus as friends?' Ready? Here we go!" Unusual for its quality and Hollywood-type production values, which can in part be attributed to the skill of cinematographer Don Malkames, this film is also notable as an early "interactive" film. Like the other Art of Living titles and like many films that were to follow in its path, including Centron's Discussion Problems in Group Living series, this film pauses momentarily at key points and poses questions to the audience. You and Your Friends follows a do's and don'ts, "Goofus and Gallant," right path/wrong path strategy — but with one big difference from other films — here no one is judged right or wrong. "None of these youngsters will do the right thing or the wrong every time. It'll be up to you to decide." However, it would take a pretty dumb kid to miss the point. Such a strategy is common to many films designed to influence and/or control behavior. It tends to downplay the seriousness of the conditioning by pretending to present a variety of views, and coasts on the entertainment value and release provided by showing obviously poor behavior. This is also a familiar strategy going back centuries, in this culture probably influenced by the Bible; it's easily understood. Nonetheless, its efficacy can always be questioned; I suspect most readers of Highlights for Children over the years have been fascinated by the transgressive Goofus rather than the tediously boring Gallant. And when antique educational films are publicly revived today, audiences universally identify with the bad child. Within the history of educational media, You and Your Friends comes off as quite modern. Like today's discussion-oriented "values clarification" videos, the movie takes place completely within an adolescent world. Both good and bad behavior is shown, and audiences are asked to discuss it. Kids are shown at a party running the show without adult supervision. Although adult authority is represented by the movie's narrator and the title cards, no one really lays out exactly what to think, unlike so many other social guidance films of the time obsessed with listing a "few simple rules." The focus on self-directed behavior rather than following rules handed down from higher authority is a key indicator of the formation of an autonomous youth culture (for more on this, see the Shy Guy program notes). This early social guidance film was part of the Art of Living series sponsored by Look magazine and distributed by Association Films, the motion-picture distribution arm of the YMCA/YWCA. Association Films was itself an offshoot of Association Press, who published numerous books relating to adolescent guidance, including Evelyn M. Duvall's influential guide Facts of Life and Love (1950). Other Art of Living titles included You and Your Attitudes (1948) and You and Your Family (1946). Three young 1950s couples dancing in living room of house; tracking shot of young couple walking into dining room; young man wearing 1940s to 1950s style suit badmouths a boy named Eddy, couple grabs food from table and open bottles of soda, young woman defends Eddy who the young man badmouths then walks out, text superimposed on shot "Is loyalty one test of friendship?"...' Reupload of a previously uploaded film with improved video & sound. Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied.
