Visit http://www.activemelody.com to download the tablature and jam tracks used in this lesson. This guitar lesson series is split into 3 parts. This first part demonstrates how to play the first part of the country guitar solo. The other 2 parts demonstrate the second half of the solo and the rhythm that is played. This style is very similar to artists like Vince Gill, Brent Mason, or Danny Gatton.

Download backingtrack & tabs here: http://www.box.net/shared/h9upvbn8gn This is a cover of "In Your Face" made by Johhny Hiland. You can find it on his CD called "Johnny Hiland". An amazing CD for pickers...highly recommendable. Being able to make this video was a long & hard goal for me to reach. Climbing the Hiland speed-picker wall took me 4 months and many crises during that period. Each day with at least 1-2 hours of practice. This edition is only 95 % of the original speed (115BPM). And even then I had to remove some of his ultrafast "no open strings" licks and change those into something I could handle. Some may advise me to play it at slower speed..but I felt it would spoil the characteristics - but for sure tones and precision may be better at a lower BPM. But I opted that out. I also had to switch to using thumbpick - and found out I needed to re-invent a thumbpick that suited me, - and THEN LEARN to use it. Also I had to get 2 acrylic nails set on my picking fingers, - AND THEN LEARN to USE them. I had to totally re-invent my gear-setup - make many recordings and decide on how to get the best sound. One thing for sure is that a Tele cannot entirely sound like his PRS guitar. The PRS guitar has a somewhat more midrange heavy output. When I saw this video myself first time I instantly thought "That looks like it is very easy to play". But I am telling you - I may look relaxed - but in my head there's a buzzing of (what's left) brain cells trying to keep up with the song. I felt I had to make a video-take more showing my picking hand as a picture-in-picture, to give you a chance to see what goes on under that hand. I would like to thank Dave Shapiro who has made the tabs / transcription to "In Your Face". You can find other good tabs made by Dave on http://ohdave.com/guitar/ Also a big thanks to Kevin (Kevland1 here & Ormond on TDPRI) for being my Tele-mentor & Tele-shrink during these months. Whenever I felt like I hit the Hiland wall - he gave me a kick and made me go for it again. Keep Picking and upload your stuff :-) / Cheers

Don Rich of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos was one of my favorite chicken pickers. He had a lick that went something like this, and it's just using the sixes. You know, we might use those in all kind of styles of music. Blues, R and B, whatever. What you can do to get that chicken picking sound is, you're sort of muting with the heel of your hand. And so you're resting the heel of the hand right on the saddles of the guitar. And if you ease back, you don't have quite enough muting. If you ease too far forward, you've got more of a percussive sound which might be what you want. So you want to find where that special spot is that gives you the right amount of percussion as opposed to the actual pitch of the notes. So the other thing is there's a little approach in this particular lick. So I'm kind of getting more of a percussive sound approaching this grip, this double-stop grip. I'm approaching from below on the third string. Okay? And there's some other places you can do this. There's also some techniques where you can do something like this. Having a Telecaster with kind of low action and a light gauge of string is kind of what you're going to need to have if you really want to get that real spanky chicken picking sound. So also, your right hand picking, you might have a little less pick sticking out than normal. That can kind of go a ways towards getting that percussive picky sound. I'm also using the middle finger. This is also really important. So we're hybrid picking here. So that gives us some of that rhythmic syncopation that we want. And I might use my ring finger along with my middle finger. So anyway, that's a little intro to chicken picking.

* Take note - solo ideas begin at 10.30 for those of you comfortable with comping in country style piano. Nick Tosches insightfully wrote that Jerry Lee Lewis swapped the music of sin (rock'n'roll) for the music of guilt (country). The aptly named Killer made some great records in the country idiom while retaining the flair that marked his trail-blazing early rock material. This tutorial centres around a later cut, "Thirty-Nine and Holding" on the Elektra label. The chords are typical for country - in the key of G with the 4 and 5 as well as 2-5-1 measures including the A7. Take note of the run ups and run downs in the left hand that enhance the emotive qualities of the song. The solo features many signature motifs of the Jerry Lee style: scale runs, riffs in sixths with tremolos, glissandos, liberal smatterings of suspended 2nd chords and blues type turnarounds. Watch Terry's playing as he varies it each time. Get these chops down and you can literally play thousands of country tunes. Enjoy!

This is a good beginner strumming pattern for people who want to learn how to play country guitar. Keep in mind that this style works equally well for acoustic or electric - the choice is yours! This strum pattern is quite popular in country music - in fact a lot of country music keeps things fairly simple, you don't have to get too complicated to make some great sounding music. The main thing is to get your strumming down so it is in time, and so you sound confident. If you love country guitar though, this is a great strum pattern to start with! A small kitchen in a Toronto semi gets a major upgrade by designer Olivia Botrie of Dart Studio. Discover how she expanded the space and created a clean country look that speaks to both contemporary and traditional sensibilities. Olivia added 65 square feet to the narrow room, creating a 250-square-foot kitchen. Custom slab cabinets in a quiet sage color offer smart storage while keeping budget in mind. A rustic wood table brings warmth to the clean, open space, and a banquette provides comfortable seating. One of the homeowners’ asks was to add enough natural light to grow plants, so Olivia chose high transom windows, which work with the modern aesthetic and still allow for privacy. For more BBQ, grilling and slow-smoking recipes, visit http://howtobbqright.com/ Country Style Ribs on the smoker. For my country style ribs recipe, I bought both Loin cut country style ribs and shoulder cut Country Ribs (or western style ribs). The first step is the seasoning these country style ribs. Layer on a combination of Salt, Black Pepper, and Garlic powder on all sides and follow that up with a good dusting of The BBQ Rub. (you can get it here: http://www.killerhogs.com/shop.html ) Let the seasoning work on the country style ribs for a few minutes while you start the smoker. I run my smoker for these country style ribs in the 275 range and use a peach wood for smoking country style ribs. After 30 minutes, the rub has draw out a little moisture from the ribs; and to allow some of the seasoning to penetrate into the country style ribs. First the country style ribs get smoked for 1 ½ hours. Half way through this process give each country style ribs a flip to ensure even cooking. You can check the internal temperature in the country style ribs at the 1:15 minute mark. When the ribs hits 150 degrees, that's about all the smoke these country style ribs need. Now you braise these country style ribs iIn a small aluminum pan pour ½ cup of pineapple juice and mix in The BBQ Sauce. (you can get it here: http://www.killerhogs.com/shop.html ) Cover the pan with foil and place it back on the smoker. Let the country ribs cook for another hour and check the tenderness and internal of around 195 degrees. At this point the Country Ribs are cooked so remove from the pan and the country style ribs back on the grate of the cooker. Brush or mop each side with The BBQ Sauce (you can get it here: http://www.killerhogs.com/shop.html ) and let the ribs caramelize for 3-4 minutes on each side. Once you see the sauce bubbling and slightly turning colors, your country style ribs are done. For more BBQ, grilling and slow-smoking recipes from Malcom Reed, visit http://howtobbqright.com/

I’ve been busy making spring changes at my house, and started with some fun farmhouse DIYs. We make an easy serving tray that can be used on a table, or hung on a wall, a cotton branch wreath, a rustic wooden clock, a simple spring arrangement with a rustic metal candle holder, and a set of 6 Galvanized hard boiled egg cups that would be perfect for a farmhouse Easter table. (bonus tip for farmhouse chargers at the end of the video) I’m so excited to start adding spring to my house!

He's one of our favorite artists of all time. He played acoustic guitar in front of the Tennessee Two or the Tennessee Three, and he had a really cool style that was pretty bad ass. He would play the acoustic guitar with a flat pick. And he'd often have it down low like this. Sometimes he'd be strumming way up here and then he'd move back here and then he'd move back up here. So that's what you'd see him to live a lot and it's really cool showmanship and it gets the job done in terms of putting the song across. The Sun Studio sessions that were so groundbreaking with the Tennessee Two had something a little different going on. He would take a card and weave it into the strings like this, okay like that, and then he would kind of use it as a percussion instrument because they didn't have a drummer. They had doghouse bass slapping away. Luther Perkins picking on the Telecaster. There was an echo machine, an extra tape machine in the studio that was used for echo, and it was often producing its own sort of rhythmic back beat. So with Johnny hitting on his guitar like that, this kind of acted like the snares that would be hitting against the underside of a snare drum. Some people would call this style of guitar playing sock guitar. You can do the same thing without a card, or you can make some chords, but the focus is on the texture of the pick going across the strings but having that card in there gives it an extra sizzle. So check it out, play along with your favorite Johnny Cash recordings and see if you don't get a little extra rhythm.
