Design Systems, Pattern Libraries & Style Guides... Oh My!
Style Guides, Pattern Libraries, and Design systems are all anyone is talking about lately, and for good reason. What Is a Style Guide? | Graphic Design
Watch more How to Have a Career in Graphic Design videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/509224-What-Is-a-Style-Guide-Graphic-Design So what is a style guide? A style guide is a guide made by designers, usually for either other designers or other people within an organization to know how to use the assets that have been designed for that company. In which case, now we'll take a look at Skype's branding guideline. So, a guideline or a branding guideline, also known as a style guide, also known as an asset guideline. There's so many different names that it has, but what it does is it actually tells a story. It tells you how the logo came about, how to use their logo, what not to use their logo on. So, for this one, Skype says the dos and the don'ts, where don't put red behind it because there's no red in the Skype logo. Or don't change the orientation. Don't put a drop shadow. It also tells you what typefaces they use. They use different ones like Arial, Tahoma and on Mac they use Helvetica and Lucida Grande and then they also tell you which colors that they also use as well. A style guide is important because it helps keep your brand consistent. It lets your customers know that you care and it lets your designers know also that you care about the work that you've done for them. That means not stretching their logo or not putting it against like, a flashing background, or not using the colors that were specifically chosen for your organization from your branding strategies. Style guides are really important because sometimes the same designer won't remain on for the project and the new designer needs to know how to treat certain things or where to find the files to do certain things that the website may need. It's important to include a style guide in your design because it shows that you're thinking ahead, and it shows that you have really put like, the thought and the care that goes into branding a company and making sure that you not only explain it, but respect it.

How to Design 1 Logo In 3 Unique Styles
Hey design superstar champions. I hope your weekend was fun and rewarding. Today I am continuing with day 19 of the 30 day logo design challenge. This video gives three unique styles you can adopt for your next logo design. The first logo design style I create is the modern and minimal logo. This kind of logo style does not take up much space, only has one or two colors, and generally is simple. The next logo design style I created was a more detailed and colored version of the simple logo. A detailed version can have anywhere from 3 to 8 colors all at once. The final logo style I use for this video is a vintage logo style. These generally have a badge shape outline. The typography for vintage logos usually includes custom type or sans serif font with very slightly rounded edges. This logo style is usually on a dark grey background with the logo or type in a light yellow, gold, or grey. I hope you enjoyed the video and get some inspiration for some new styles to use on your next logo design project! Interior Design Styles 8 Popular Types Explained | HD
Looking to decorate your new home and seeking thematic inspiration? Search no more. We’re covering 8 interior design styles that are popular in modern homes. In reality, practitioners blend different elements from several decorating styles together, but it’s crucial to identify the core aspects of each one. Obviously, there are interior design styles beyond the 8 types outlined below, but I wanted to focus on the major schools that are currently in vogue. I will keep this list updated every year – removing those that may have fallen out of favor and adding new ones. Also, if you’re looking to add a new piece or two to your home, check out our main store where we always curate our catalog for the newest interior design styles. What you'll need: 1.Styled: Secrets for Arranging Rooms, from Tabletops to Bookshelves , $25.99, amazon.com ►http://amzn.to/2BAS6W9 2.Elements of Style: Designing a Home & a Life, $21.13, amazon.com ►http://amzn.to/2BDa5vg 3.The Interior Design Reference & Specification Book: Everything Interior Designers Need to Know Every Day , $18.37, amazon.com ►http://amzn.to/2BOtCvi 1. Mid-Century Modern The mid-1900s produced some of the most iconic pieces in modern design. It is characterized by refined lines, minimalist silhouettes, and natural shapes. From Saarinen, Niemeyer, Eames, Noguchi, Jacobsen and beyond, the mid-century modern masters defined creative ways to use new materials like molded plastic, plywood, and aluminum in industrial design. Its pieces are highly versatile and can complement a myriad of design styles. 2. Industrial This is a look that hearkens back to the turn-of-the-century industrial era. It emphasizes liberal use of exposed steel with distressed wooden elements, frequently complemented by exposed brick walls. The modern variant commonly includes copper-tone accents. In terms of general feel, industrial decor is often rustic and mature. 3. Nautical Warm, relaxing, and positive. Nautical decor (also referred to as coastal or cottage decor) reflects the New England beach house spirit. This interior design style is based on white or sand colored foundation, with blue as the primary accent color. 4. Scandinavian An off-shoot of the mid-century modern movement, Scandinavian design introduced a popular minimalist look to the interior architecture field that lasts to this day. Although most people associate it with IKEA (I’ve covered stores like IKEA in the past), there are a variety of subset looks within Scandinavian design itself. 5. Bohemian Bohemian decor captures the carefree and adventurous spirit of the avant-garde lifestyle. It features creative application of rich patterns and vibrant colors, especially those with red or purple tones. The key is to carefully present a purposefully “messy” look. Layer on textiles (throws, pillows, rugs, tapestry) for a warm ambience. 6. Farmhouse Farmhouse decor is a modern approach to cabin-inspired interior design. Mostly transitional in nature with some traditional elements mixed in, farmhouse aesthetic should transport your imagination to French Provence. Source some dried lavender bunches and other greeneries – careful arrangement of vases and planters will really stylize your home. 7. Urban Modern Urban interior design stems from the modern designer lofts in the major cities. Taking cues from its cosmopolitan environment, urban modern is a fusion of various opposing and complementary traits. Minimalist modern, glamorous chic, ethnic heirlooms, and edgy experimental designs all collide in a distinctively 21st-century setting. 8. Shabby Chic Shabby chic decor emphasizes vintage elements to recreate the antique flea market look. The furniture are characterized by their aged appearance, with distressed wood composition covered in sanded milk paint to show signs of wear and tear. Different Furniture Style Types | Interior Design
Watch more Interior Design Basics videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/509509-Different-Furniture-Style-Types-Interior-Design Furniture style and different types really range the span. I mean think about our history. The history of furniture and different types, span the whole history of the world. You have your more Traditional, which is usually found in the European countries, because you have your Louis XV. You have your pre-Italianate. You have all these different species. Then you come to America, which we started a lot sooner than you did in other countries. So you have a lot of the Pilgrims and a lot of the early-American furniture. And then it goes into my favorite, which is Mid-Century Modern. You have the 60s, the 70s that are really coming back again, because everything old is new. And you walk into different people's homes and you'll find a little bit of everything. You have your Modern with your sleek lines. The arms are really sleek. There's no ornamentation, which denotes that it's Modern. You have your more Traditional, which have the ornate carvings. The ball and claw feet sometimes, if you want to go really Traditional. Sometimes you have this new Transitional that's going on. Now Transitional, you have a mixture of Modern and Traditional and what that means is that you have clean lines, so it's not fussy. There's not tons of pillows and things everywhere, but you have Traditional elements. So maybe you'll have a little carving here and there. You have a little accent color on the pillows and the fabrics. So it's a mixture of both worlds. You'll find that more prevalent today on the different TV shows, in the different magazines. You'll see more of a transition in the furniture and the way it's making it into the market right now. Just be aware of what you feel comfortable with. There's really no wrong or right and you can mix your pieces. You can do Modern with Traditional. There is really no rules to it. The only thing you want to keep in mind is, if you have a lot of heavy pieces, make sure you do a couple of delicate pieces and vice versa. If you have delicate, make sure you throw in a nice bold piece. That's really it, other than that your home is your own, and just make sure that you make it personal.

SPECSTRA : Get tons of visual design style guides in minutes instead of weeks!
Refer : https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/specstra-20-my-experiments-cloud-based-design-process-samir-dash?trk=prof-post It takes a minute or two for ‘Specstra’ to generate a print-ready 100 pages long style guide for any submitted design. he printable visual style guide generated within minutes from ‘Specstra’ comes handy for developers to make a pixel perfect UI. Specstra is a pet prototype that I had started working on, 3 years back (around 2013) to explore a possible solution for design related automation process. The problem of design automation is most of the process blocks are related to creative aspect of the work the designer does. So I started with the blocks that were more aligned to less creative activity so that these blocks can be removed from the creative process flow . One of such area was creation of style guide design from the selected design where the designer has to spend hours to manually define specs. So How Spectra Helps? So in this context for a designer -- 1. for the designer 1/4th of his work remains creative and gives him the scope to explore, innovate and express through his designs. 2. remaining 3/4th of his time is a purely drafts-man job. So a designers job is actually boring as the volume of his output is not creative or inspirational. For the organization -- 1. It is paying higher fee for lower type of work. To exlain it -- a creative work like that of coming of new designs is typically high paid job, where as the drafting job based on a creative guy's is a low profile job , and should be paid less. But interestingly this is the same designer, so the payment rate is actually based on his skill of how he performs in the 1/4th of the job where the creative juice flows and he is actually innovates. 2. Even though the 3/4th of the job is lower profile job, which could have been automated, consumes more from the delivery time. if we look at the timeline of the delivery of the design deliverables, we see that 1/4th of the delivery time is actually spent in creative way. So actually if there is a scope to automate the low profile manual work, where the designer does not need to use his right brain, then the deliverables could have been delivered in just 1 week instead of a month! Also note that time is money for industry, so the organization is actually spend 300% more than it should and that too on a higher price point. Again apart from this there are other factor that contributed to a above problem. Being in a world of rapidly changing requirements, many industry are following "Agile" or "Iterative" approach of work. Which means in the short notice things can change even to the look and feel and UI aspect which would mean a change to the style guide if view of standard control lines are affected. This has a cascading effect that flows through the style guide work. So any change in such requirement means the wastage of effort and addition of new efforts to keep the specs aligned. Imagine, if multiple design centered projects are running on mission critical deadlines due to faster time to market needs, and such kind of scenario is happening to most of the projects. Looking at these kind of need, many design firms, keep a larger design workforce, to absorb such shocks. But that means more volume of cash burn at a higher price points for the enterprise and smaller startups do not stand a chance in such scenarios. Another aspect that I think is important to notice here is that due to time crunch, many designers prefer to avoid granularity in the style guides. Provide common documentation and provide very high level change documentations to developers. Also in some cases there are gaps left in the document that go unnoticed, which forces the developers to get in touch with the designers during development phases. Also due to lack of a complete and meaningful style guide or specs, the software testing also gets impacted due to many blur lines among what is in and what's out. Certain things the testers take as assumptions while completing the testing phases.

Interior Design Styles: Art Deco
If you’re in the early stages of redesigning a specific room, or even the entire house, House Tipster says that choosing an interior design style to guide your inspiration will help you to create a cohesive theme. The bold geometry and decadent details of the Art Deco style is perfect to give your home a signature aesthetic focused around eye-catching luxury. Art Deco first appeared in France and flourished throughout the antebellum period between World War I and II. The introduction of innovative industry and technology in the Roaring 20s paved the way for a new bold and flashy style. Breaking away from the emphasized curves, plant inspired motifs, and organic forms of the Art Nouveau period; Art Deco incorporates gallant geometric shapes, symmetry, and lavish ornamentation to evoke Hollywood glamor. Some of the most iconic Art Deco installations are the Chrysler Building and Rockefeller Center in New York City. Many contemporary hotels and urban lofts feature this style as well. So, how exactly can you incorporate Art Deco into your interior design? First add strong shapes, such as spheres, rectangles, zigzags, and chevrons. Keeping a consistent theme of shapes through each room will establish the symmetrical tendencies of Art Deco designers. Signature materials to incorporate include, aluminum, stainless steel, chrome, stained glass, and gold. Exotic items like zebra skin, Ancient Egypt-influenced art and furniture, and Pop Art will give your room the right motifs. Since Art Deco is minimalist in nature, design with a neutral color pallet. Include shades of black, brown, gray, and white accented with bold colors like red, green, and gold. When choosing furniture, focus on industrial materials and highly lacquered wood pieces. Velour material is commonly used to make rigid structures appear more comfortable and inviting. Types Guide & Furniture Styles , Furniture design ideas
There are plenty of different styles of furniture on the market, but with so many terms getting thrown around it’s hard to know what is what! Here we have broken down the most commonly used terms to give you a hand with choosing your ideal furniture style. Read on to get tips on how to recognize the differences between furniture styles that are often confused: • Antique vs. Vintage • Traditional vs. Rustic • Art Deco vs. Retro • Shabby Chic vs. French provincial • Modern vs. Contemporary Plus we’ve pulled extra information for you on each of the styles. Antique vs. Vintage Antique furniture includes pieces from an earlier period. It is often crafted out of wood and its age, condition, unique features and rarity determine how collectible the piece is and therefore, how high its value. Genuine antiques are, by definition, at least 100 years old and often have to be purchased from experienced dealers to guarantee authenticity. Vintage furniture on the other hand is between twenty and one hundred years old and is easily recognisable as belonging to a particular period within that time. Once you know what you’re looking for, spotting it is easier than it sounds! Traditional vs. Rustic Traditional furniture is formal furniture from the Victorian period. It combines features from the Queen Anne period – graceful and elaborately decorated, Chippendale style – artistic embellishment and straightened out lines and Sheraton style – delicate pieces with tapered legs and contrasting inlays. Together this creates a comfortable and warm environment with hand crafted, dark timber pieces, over stuffed, plush sofas and elegant fabrics. Rustic style furniture is influenced by many different styles coming together to create warm, natural and honest interiors. If furniture is rustic it will often be made of a warm timber or a natural material like animal hide, cotton or linen. It has a worn and homely appearance and is often more relaxed then formal. Scandinavian and industrial furniture design are usually synonymous with being rustic. Art Deco vs. Retro Art Deco is an eclectic style that combines Machine Age imagery and materials with traditional crafts. The style is characterized by geometric and angular shapes, materials like chrome, glass, shiny fabrics, mirrors and mirror tiles as well as stylized images of aeroplanes, cars and skyscrapers. With the success of The Great Gatsby movie and TV series like Boardwalk Empire, Art Deco is back in full force. Retro furniture can be harder to define. When we think of Retro design we usually conjure up ideas of mod, geometric shapes in teal, yellow and brown or flashbacks to the kitchen from the Brady Bunch with its tulip table and orange splash back. Technically, retro furniture design is defined as aspects of modern culture which imitate trends, modes and fashions of the recent past which had come to be unfashionable. Shabby Chic vs. French provincial French provincial furniture is exactly what its title depicts. Characterised by the styles popular in the French provinces in the 17th and 18th century, this furniture style has a classic yet country feel to it. Ladder back dining chairs with woven seats, simple scalloped carving, large armoires or French sideboards with decorative moldings are all key features of this style. Shabby Chic furniture, while similar, is more casual and often has a distressed appearance. The Furniture is typically white with a feminine and romantic feel. Like French provincial, this style originated from country houses but incorporates more up-cycling and salvaging of furniture. Modern vs. Contemporary Modern furniture originated under the modernist movement in the early 1900’s. It often combines leather, vinyl, steel, moulded plywood and plastics with a monochromatic colour scheme to create sleek and stylish interiors. Big name designers like Herman Miller, Hans Knoll and Charles and Ray Eames are the faces for this design era and you’ll often find replicas of their modern furniture designs on the market today. The Barcelona chair is a timeless example of modern design. Modern furniture design is a defined style and will always refer to the modernist period of time, contemporary furniture design however, refers to furniture that is popular and used now, in the present. Furniture will often be described as “modern and contemporary”, which is where the confusion comes in between these two styles. -------------------------------------------------- ►WELCOME TO HOME&IDEAS CHANNEL •Subscribe to HOME&IDEAS YouTube Channel : https://goo.gl/kmXXvu -------------------------------------------------- ►CONNECT WITH HOME & IDEAS ! •Google+ : https://goo.gl/5oYKeb •Twitter : https://goo.gl/xahrkn •Facebook : https://goo.gl/WS7XTq •Instagram : https://goo.gl/g9MQi6 •Pinterest : https://goo.gl/fTko4U
