Starfish facts: 11 facts about Sea Stars

Here are 11 facts about starfish or sea stars as they are now called to help gain a better understanding about them. All images used courtesy of wikipedia All videos used under creative commons license. Starfish https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ll74xmyIlk Pink Starfish Rescue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNj_Ktf_sEI Synopsis 11. The Sea Star is the alternative name for a starfish as it is not a fish but an echinoderm and it is related to sand dollars or sea urchins. 10. Around the oceans of the world there are around 2000 species of sea star living in all kinds of climates, from warm to cold waters. 9. The five armed species of sea star are the most common, but there are species that have many more arms. In fact, there are some that have up to 40 arms. 8. Sea stars have calcified and bony skin which gives them protection from predators. Different species have different colourings including many species that have striking colours so as to warn off predators. 7. They are strictly saltwater creatures and do not survive in freshwater. 6. Sea stars have the ability to regenerate their limbs and in some cases can regenerate their entire bodies. They can do this as they have most if not all of their vital organs in their arms. However, this does not happen quickly and it will take about a year for a limb to grow back. 5. Some species of sea stars need to have their main body in tact in order to regenerate their arms. 4. However their are some species that need just some of their severed limbs to be intact in order to grow a whole new body. 3. The majority of sea stars have the amazing ability to eat their prey outside of their bodies. They use small suction cupped tubed feet to open up the oysters and clams that they eat and their stomach then emerges from their mouths and their arms prise open the shell just enough and their stomach then enters it and digests it. Then the stomach then returns to the body. So basically they eat inside out, and this allows them to eat larger prey than they would normally be able to fit into their mouths. 2. Sea stars do not have blood in their bodies. Instead, they have a water vascular system where they pump sea water through its sift plate or majoporite into their tube feet. Their tube feet are full of sea water and give strength to them. They then use their tube feet to move and to hold their prey. 1. They have an anae spot and the end of each of their arms which is a very simple eye that looks like a red spot. The eye can sense dark and light but not a lot of detail.

14 Ocean's Deadliest Creatures

07:51
Here are the top 14 dangerous and some even poisonous creatures in the ocean it's terrifying to think they are under there waiting!! 7. Megalodon Megalodon is an extinct species of shark that lived millions of years ago. They were a lot like the great white sharks of today only much bigger. While great whites can reach a length of 20 feet, Megalodon’s could reportedly reach a ridiculous length of nearly 60 feet. Their teeth have been found across the globe from Australia to Japan and as far north as England and Denmark. 6. Killer Whales Being an apex predator means you have no natural predators. Essentially these are the animals at the top of the food chain. Killer, or Orca, whales are considered apex predators and have been known to kill great white sharks, leopard seals, and even other whales. Like wolves, they have a tendency to hunt in packs. Wild orcas don't pose any threat to humans, but there have been incidents in which captive orcas have killed or seriously injured their handlers at marine theme parks. These events highlight the fact that people should probably stop keeping killer whales in captivity rather than any indication that orcas are potentially dangerous to humans. 5. Stingrays Stingrays are usually very passive and gentle around human beings. But if they feel vulnerable in any way they have barbed stingers on their tails that inflict notoriously painful stings that can be deadly when hit in the chest or abdomen. Since stingrays spend a lot of time camouflaging on the seafloor humans often step on them accidentally and end up with a very sore foot to show for it. The world just recognized the ten year anniversary of popular wildlife expert Steve Irwin’s death, who was fatally stung by a stingray on September 4, 2006. 4. Leopard Seal Most seals are relatively harmless and pose no threat to human beings. Leopard seals, however, are not your average run of the mill seal. They are the only seals that eat warm-blooded prey, and the females are larger than the males, another oddity amongst seals. They eat penguins, smaller seals and squid using their powerful jaws, sharp teeth, and clever hunting tactics. In 2003 a British marine biologist was fatally attacked by a leopard seal while snorkeling off of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was the first time a fatal seal attack was recorded, and though seal attacks are rare scientists speculate that the more humans interact with these seals, the more attacks there will be in the future. 3. Box Jellyfish Amongst the world’s most poisonous creatures, this unassuming ocean dweller is responsible for many fatalities annually. Many countries don’t require death certificates, so the exact number isn’t known, but judging from the fact that 20 to 40 people die every year in the Philippines alone, it’s safe to assume that box jellyfish are one of the ocean’s deadliest creatures. Their tentacles are covered with cnidocyst, which contains a tiny dart loaded with a poison that can cause a rapid spike in blood pressure leading to a potentially fatal heart attack. These facts have led some to call the box jellyfish the world’s most venomous creature. 2. Sharks When talking about the ocean’s deadliest predators, sharks are usually the first creatures to come to people’s minds. Though their reputation does have some basis in reality, it is cultural references like the Jaws movie franchise and the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week that have ballooned the shark’s reputation to all new somewhat undeserving heights. There are around 500 species of sharks, but only three, the great white, tiger and bull sharks are responsible for double-digit fatalities. From 1948 to early 2016 there were 2,899 total unprovoked shark attacks recorded around the world, 548 of which were fatal. In comparison, you are more likely to be killed by a falling aircraft or riding a horse. 1. Saltwater Crocodile The saltwater crocodile has two things going for it that help to make them the ocean’s deadliest. These beasts are the largest reptiles on the planet, reaching weights of up to 2,600 pounds and have the most powerful bite on earth, ten times stronger than that of the great white shark. Of all crocodiles, this territorial species is the most likely to treat humans as prey. There are a few fatal saltwater crocodile attacks per year in Australia, with many more attacks from different areas of the world that are believed to go unreported.

Starfish Walking on the Beach

01:27
Shortcut to get back to this video: WalkingStarfish.com It was early evening, probably around 6pm or so at low tide. We noticed there were starfish walking around on the sand near the water. Some were in tide pools but some were just strolling on the sand, very very very slowly. The ones that were on the sand we carefully relocated back to the ocean or a tide pool. Other people coming out to the beach were fascinated by the large amount of starfish and helped relocate the walkers to the water as well. This was shot on the Outer Banks of North Carolina (specifically Corolla, NC) in early October 2012. Almost the exact same spot on the beach that a WWII mine washed up in late September 2017 (https://outerbanksvoice.com/2017/09/25/unexploded-mines-wash-up-on-hatteras-and-corolla-beaches/) Also, to clear up the questions about the "foot" in the video. It's my son's foot and he was squatting down. He was 4 at the time of the video. Looks like a strange deformed thing but it's just a normal 4 year old's foot. If you enjoyed this video please take a moment to visit Buffalo Monkey on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/buffalomonkeyconservation/) a conservation focused page that initially introduced this video to the world by posting to Facebook (with my full permission of course). Why Sea Cucumbers Are Dangerous

14:01
Sea cucumbers are rather inconspicuous animals and are certainly not the most well-known sea creatures. They are nonetheless of enormous importance for the oceans and us humans. But don't get too excited because despite their harmless appearance they are actually not as safe to handle as one might think. In this video, you find out why. Sea Stars | JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD

08:30
At first glance, starfish, more properly called sea stars, aren't doing much of anything. But Jonathan's investigations reveal a slow-motion predator that hunts and attacks its prey. Traveling the world, Jonathan investigates sea stars from the tropics to the Antarctic and uses time-lapse photography to reveal an amazing complexity to the world of the sea star. ********************************************************************** If you like Jonathan Bird's Blue World, don't forget to subscribe! You can buy some Blue World T-shirts & Swag! http://www.blueworldtv.com/shop You can join us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/BlueWorldTV Twitter https://twitter.com/BlueWorld_TV Instagram @blueworldtv Web: http://www.blueworldTV.com ********************************************************************** You might not think of sea stars as being very intelligent, and you’d be right, but you might be impressed by some of the amazing things they can do, especially considering they don’t have a brain! Starfish, more correctly called sea stars, live just about everywhere in the ocean, from the tropics, to Antarctica and everywhere in between. They come in all shapes and sizes from fat and stubby… to long and skinny. This brittle star walks with a coordinated effort using its rays like legs. But most sea stars get around using hundreds or thousands of tiny tube feet on their underside. This is a Northern Sea star, living in the coastal waters of New England, and it’s a predator. It’s hunting a scallop. It’s a drama played out in slow motion as the sea star moves in for a grip on the scallop’s shell. But the scallop is not defenseless. With a mighty blast of water, the scallop jets away to safety. So the sea star wraps itself around a mussel. Mussels are attached to the bottom and can’t get away. The sea star uses it’s strong tube feet with suction cups to pull the mussel open a tiny bit, and digests its victim by injecting its stomach inside the mussel. Picking up the sea star, I can see that it has the mussel firmly in its grip. But not all sea stars feed on mussels and scallops. A Basket star feeds on plankton in the water. It has finely branched arms that act like a net, to catch the tiny bits of food floating by. It positions itself to be able to grab as much plankton as possible in the current. Exploring a reef in the tropical Pacific, I find a Crown-of-thorns sea star dining on the coral. This thorny, armored sea star is one of only a few animals that can digest living coral. It wraps itself around a coral colony and eats the polyps, leaving a dead, bleached coral skeleton behind. Here’s a healthy colony of plate coral. And here’s one that has been eaten by a crown-of-thorns. Outbreaks of these sea stars have been known to kill entire reefs. Carefully picking one up to avoid the sharp and venomous spines, I can see the stomach, which the sea star inverts out of its mouth to digest the coral outside of its body. These sea stars are the second largest in the world, growing bigger than a dinner plate. But if you think these are big, wait until you see the largest sea star in the world! To find it, I've come all the way to British Columbia. I'm looking for the Giant Sun Star, and you won't believe the size of this thing! In the cold, murky waters of the Canadian north Pacific, I swim through beautiful gardens of sponges, anemones and soft coral, searching for a Giant Sun star. And then, down on the bottom, I find what I’m looking for. It has up to 24 arms, more properly called rays and reaches 3 feet across. This is the world’s largest sea star! Compared to most sea stars, the Giant Sun Star is a speed demon, cruising along the bottom in search of its favorite food—other sea stars and the occasional sea cucumber! Here, a sea cucumber makes an emergency retreat to escape this hungry Sun Star on the move! A thousand miles south on a reef in the tropics, I find a blue Linckia sea star on the bottom. Like the vast majority of sea stars, this one has only 5 rays. With tiny tube feet on its underside, this sea star barely seems to move, but when I speed things up with time lapse photography, Linckia sea stars appear very active, moving about and grazing the bottom for food. But even more curiously, they are polite, restraining from walking on top of each other. Like bumper cars, when one Linckia touches another, they each go the other direction. It’s all very civilized. In an hour, a Linckia on the move can travel several car lengths.

MYSTERIOUS Creatures Living At The BOTTOM Of The World!

12:59
Check out these mysterious creatures living at the bottom of the world! From scary deep sea monsters to bizarre animals living at the mariana trench, this top 10 list of creatures living in the deep ocean will give you chills! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "FRIENDLIEST Sea Creatures Around The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/AL45LsRItq8 Watch our "Most TERRIFYING Sea Monsters Ever!" video here: https://youtu.be/B9aPB6KB504 Watch our "STRANGEST Things Found In The Ocean!" video here: https://youtu.be/XYfqi5VNgac 10. Deep Sea Starfish There are more than 2,000 known species of sea star, ranging from those that you find in rock pools to those that you’d see on a coral reef- but amongst the most bizarre ones that have been found are those that live deep below the waves. 9. Glass Finger This strange species of sea sponge that lives in deep waters are called Glass Fingers. Apart from looking like glass, their name actually comes from the way that their skeletons are formed. 8. Deep Sea Spider If you’re not too fond of spiders around your home, then these next creatures will show you how lucky you are to live on land! Spiders of epic proportions do live among us and grow to huge sizes of the coast of Antarctica. 7. Acorn Worm Acorn worms can live anywhere from the shoreline to over 3000 meters (10,000 ft) deep. They are very unusual creatures. There are actually only less than 100 known species of Acorn worm, and most varieties grow up to 1.5 feet long. 6. Barreleye Fish If you didn’t know any better, you might think this fish was some kind of aquatic robot used to spy on submarines during the cold war! The Pacific barreleye fish is an extraordinary creature that lives deep in the ocean’s waters. 5. Giant Isopod The Giant Isopod is another creepy creature that lives at the bottom of the sea. Related to pillbugs, it’s not actually a bug. It’s a carnivorous crustacean that crawls around the deep sea floor looking for food- from the remains of creatures that have fallen to the depths, or slow moving, living creatures like sea cucumbers and sponges, that it’s able to catch up to. 4. Dragon Fish The deep sea dragonfish, also called the Barbeled Dragonfish, is a family of fish that are found in the deepest parts of the ocean around the world. In all, there are nearly 300 different known species, each of which have their own unique characteristics. 3. Mariana Snailfish The ability for scientists to explore the deepest parts of the ocean has improved significantly in recent decades, which has led to a number of unmanned research missions to the deepest known place on Earth! 2. Sleeper Sharks Sleeper sharks are very rarely seen by ocean researchers. They are known to live in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and grow to up to 23 feet (7 meters) long and weigh up to 1,958 pounds (888 kg). A discovery in 2016 completely changed the way these creatures are understood. 1. Devil Worm All of the other animals on this list live in the ocean, since they provide much more habitable environments than are available underground, and far more research has been done in the water because it’s easier to access. This final one, though is the exception. Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

Get ready to see the spikiest episode of Beyond the Tide yet! Huge thanks to everyone at the Biscayne Nature Center and their supporters who made this video possible! The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center is dedicated to environmental education and the encouragement of better citizen participation in the protection of our natural environment.    The not-for-profit organization was started by Marjory Stoneman Douglas in 1985 when she was 95 years old. The programs started in 1969 as a summer camp program and in 1971 began as a year round school field trip program for 6th grade students by a group of Miami-Dade Public School teachers.       In 1985 Marjory was called upon to save the program from budget cuts and decided that children are the future stewards of our natural world and we should educate them about their natural environment. Key Biscayne was the perfect spot for that because we have all the Florida eco-systems right in one spot.  The seagrass, the coastal  hardwood hammock, mangroves, dunes, and the fossilized mangrove reef.   She felt the community needed a "Nature Center by the Sea".  As people explore nature, they will learn to preserve and protect what they love.  Website:  http://bit.ly/biscaynenature Open seven days a week 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Free of charge  Our new series Beyond the Tide explores the mysterious world of the ocean and brings you closer than ever to its most fascinating creatures. 19 INCREDIBLY Colorful Sea Creatures

09:30
From Nemo, the clownfish, to the beautiful and elusive Blue Sea Slug, these are 19 INCREDIBLY Colorful Sea Creatures ! 8. Blue Tang -- Undersea creatures seem to look really cool in blue … and this one is no exception. The Blue Tang shows off some amazing blue coloration complemented by bold black markings. It almost sounds like a fashion shows, right? These fish are usually found in Indo-Pacific waters and are actually bright yellow when they’re younger. The blue and black colors show up at their final phase of development. 7. Coral -- Is that a brain at the bottom of the ocean? No … but it is a brain coral … and just an example of the wide ranging variety of living coral and coral reefs, some of which are thought to have started growing over 50 million years ago. Contrary to some beliefs, coral are animals, not plants … they’re actually related to anemones and jellyfish. The reefs formed by coral provide housing for thousands of marine species, giving them a place to find food, reproduce, and keep them safe until they’re mature enough to venture into the deeper ocean. Did you know coral reef plants and animals have proven important to the development of new medicines to treat cancer, Alzheimer's and heart disease? But even with all those advantages, human activity is threatening almost 60 percent of the world’s coral reefs. 6. Flower Hat Jellyfish -- This rare species of jellyfish is a rare species usually found in the waters of southern japan, Argentina and Brazil. It can grow to a half-foot in diameter, and is easily recognizable by its translucent bell, which is pinstriped with opaque bands. Those coiling tentacles adhere to the rim while not in use. Like many pretty looking things, this jelly carries a sting … but even though it’s painful, it’s non-lethal to humans … the worst you’d get is a rash. 5. Blue Sea Slug -- We couldn’t find a lot of information on this critter. From what we’ve seen, it’s often identified as a Blue Sea Slug … but that sounds like a pedestrian name for such a colorful creature. You can see the brilliant blue coloration in this photo … the animal almost looks like an alien life form with the two antennae sticking up. We’re guessing it might be a Nudibranch (new-di-brank). Those mollusks are noted for their striking colors, and there are more than 2,300 validated species scattered about the world. Can you confirm that? Let us know in the comments! 4. Mantis Shrimp -- They’re one of the most colorful forms of marine life, but don’t be fooled. They’re also known as ferocious undersea predators that possess, pound for pound, one of the most powerful punches on the planet. Punching with speed equal to a .22 caliber bullet, the Mantis Shrimp has not only broken shells of its prey … it’s also broken through aquarium glass. Punching at that velocity makes water vaporize and explode with a sharp bang, a flash of light and extremely high heat, all of which is felt by the victim as an additional blast. Not bad for an animal that averages less than four inches long. 3. Juvenile Emperor Angelfish -- Their coloration will change with age … but while they’re young, they exhibit these amazing displays of swirling dark blue, white and electric blue. It almost look hypnotic, right? Well, the fish keeps these distinct patterns until it reaches maturity, which usually takes around 4 years. Then the fish develops blue and yellow stripes, and black shading around its eyes. 2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amphiprioninae Clownfish -- Did you recognize them from “Finding Nemo”? Known as one of the most brightly colored fish in the world, their bodies have distinctive white striping with colors that can vary from red, orange or yellow. They’re also known as anemone fishes, because of their mutually beneficial relationship with sea anemones. The toxic tentacles of the anemones protect clownfish from predators. And the fast movement of the fishes helps anemones find food and increase circulation. 1. The Mandarinfish -- Also known as the “Mandarin Dragonet” it swims in the Pacific reefs … but it’s less than 3 inches long so it can be difficult to see in the wild. As you might guess, this fish is highly sought after in the aquarium trade … but they’re considered extremely difficult to their strict eating habits. Some people think the Mandarinfish might be the most beautiful fish in the world … would you agree? to Epic Wildlife http://goo.gl/6rzs5u Let's Connect -- http://www.epicadamwildlife.com/ -- http://www.facebook.com/epicadamwildlife -- http://www.twitter.com/epicwildlife -- http://gplus.to/epicwildlife

Sea Star Wasting Syndrome

03:15
http://hakaimagazine.com/ Since June 2013, sea stars in the northeast Pacific Ocean have been dying in a most gruesome fashion. Lesions appear, tissues decay, limbs fall off, and death soon follows. Within just a few days the animal appears to have melted away. Scientists have honed in on death by densovirus as the leading suspect in this sea star wasting syndrome. And while it is alarming to watch, the loss of sea stars in the intertidal zone also presents an opportunity for researchers: what happens when you remove a predator like the sea star Pisaster ochraceus from the intertidal ecosystem? Back in the 1960s, researcher Robert Paine, from the University of Washington, manufactured this scenario by handpicking the sea stars off a stretch of Tatoosh Island, Washington, and from this work articulated the concept of keystone species: a species whose presence or absence makes a marked impact in an ecosystem. But the 2013 outbreak of sea star wasting syndrome gives researchers like Monica Moritsch, a graduate student from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a chance to monitor changes as the sea star populations plummet and then, hopefully, begin to repopulate the intertidal zone. This video shows Moritsch at work near Long Marine Lab, Santa Cruz.

The venomous thorn-like spines that protect this starfish are the least of our problems - this species is destroying coral reefs in many parts of the world due to an imbalance in the oceans - find out more in this video.
Bizarre Humanoid Sea Creature Found Alive. China, July 9, 2018

00:55
This strange looking creature was found floating along the shore of this beach in China. While the man who found this creature is holding it up to show his friend we can see it moving it's legs. The creature seem to have an human like head with some sort of arms and legs. In my opinion this could be a new species of sea life or an mutated starfish but i'm going to ask my dear friend Dr. Karl Shuker what he thinks and will pin his comment , Stay Blessed..
