Our story begins in the Tasman Sea, the body of water between Australia and New Zealand. It’s exactly here where the Lord Howe Island Group had been lying unperturbed until 1788. That year changed everything in the history of this lost place as British lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball discovered the central island of this group as he was on his way to nearby Norfolk Island. Having fulfilled his mission, Ball was heading home when he decided to claim a newly-uncovered territory for his country. At that time, nobody could’ve imagined the surprises this island would have in store for people decades later! After Ball’s discovery, permanent settlements had already been established on the main island by 1834. Despite being just 6.2 miles long, Lord Howe Island represented (and still represents) an idyllic picture of a tropical paradise. As for the rest of the islands belonging to this group, they were mostly rocky volcanic landmasses. Modem archaeological scientists and engineers try and recreate and decipher the mystery of Easter Island's Moai statues by experimenting with archaic engineering methods and mysterious practices. Curved from stone, the human figures have over-sized heads, often resting on massive rock platforms called ahus, partially buried underground. 1,000 statues exist on the island, 30 feet tall, weighing a colossal 75 tons, scattered about the barren landscape in the mountains and close to the ocean. Society and tradition was tribal and primitive, with black magic priests and chieftains writing strange hieroglyphic languages known as rongorongo. Not unlike Europe's Stonehenge, this civilization constructed and moved these monolithic sculptures without present-day tools and equipment.

NYC has about 40 islands. And among those, there’s one that’s so confidential that you can't even visit it! Mystery worth solving, don't you think? We’re about to take a trip to the hush-hush New York island known as U Thant. You’ll definitely be surprised by its interesting history... TIMESTAMPS: The history of U Thant Island 1:06 What U Thant Island is now 3:33 Another closed-off island in New York that's oozing with mystery 4:02 Snake Island in Brasil 5:20 Heard Island in the middle of the ocean between Australia and Antarctica 6:23 Surtsey Island in Iceland 7:14 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY: - U Thant Island is a teeny-tiny 100-by-200-foot artificial island located off the coast of Manhattan. Its history goes way back to the 1890s. The island remained undisturbed and out of the spotlight until 1977 when it was adopted by the Peace Meditation at the United Nations. - It’s now turned into a protected sanctuary for migrating birds, including a small colony of beautiful double-crested cormorants. - North Brother Island is currently designated as a bird sanctuary, but its history is a lot darker. The island was abandoned up until 1885 when it became the new location for Riverside Hospital. Riverside was at first an isolated hospital for smallpox patients but over time expanded and started accepting sufferers of other types of highly contagious and deadly diseases, like tuberculosis and typhoid fever. - If we venture out across the globe, we’ll find even more places that are, for one reason or another, off-limits for visitors. One prime example is Snake Island, which is located about 90 miles off the coast of Sao Paulo. As to why this place is forbidden for travel, the name says it all! Snake Island houses from 2,000 to 4,000 venomous snakes. - There are other even more mysterious places out there, like Heard Island. You can find it in the middle of the ocean between Australia and Antarctica. Heard Island is home to animals that are totally unique to this area, and the Australian government wants them to live in peace without human intervention. - Surtsey Island was formed from a huge volcanic eruption that took place back in 1963. The eruption lasted for 4 whole years, allowing the island to grow to a size of one square mile. Since then, it’s continued to be a place of interest for volcanologists, botanists, and biologists alike. Islands throughout the world that are shrouded in mystery! From Mexico's creepy Island of the Dolls to the Naval Base on Diego Garcia the histories of these islands are full of myths and secrecy. #9. “Island of Socotra”- Off the coast of Somalia in the Indian ocean is an island that seems as though it belongs on another planet. Socotra Island has long been theorized as a location for the biblical Garden of Eden, and just by looking at pictures of it you can see why. The island is home to several species of plants that are can’t be found anywhere else on Earth. There are the Dr. Seuss looking Adenium socotranum which have big bulbous trunks and tiny gnarly branches that sprout from their tops and bear flowers that are a marvelous shade of pink. There odd appearance makes them kind of look like giant root vegetables. Then there are the Dragon’s Blood Trees which look like perfect natural umbrellas. The have trunks that resemble that of an average tree but their thick tightly bunched branches shoot upwards and form a mushroom like crown. Socotra is also home to three geographically unique species of bird: the socotra sunbird, socotra grosbeak and socotra starling. There aren’t many other creatures that inhabit the island other than that of bats and insects and the last time it was home to man was around the year 100 A.D. Adding to the mystery, the island has been the site of dozens of shipwrecks over the years. #8. “Palmyra Atoll”- Though technically not an island but an atoll that formed from coral the mysterious nature of Palmyra Atoll cannot be ignored. Also known as Palmyra Island, the breathtakingly beautiful ringlet sits between American Samoa and Hawaii. Though it is full of lush vegetation and appears unblemished by man the island has long be the subject of superstition and folktales. There have been several cases of violent shipwrecks and mysterious disappearances of ships on and around the island. Those who have observed the island and survived to tell their tale have claimed having seen some extremely bizarre sights like that of floating lights, ghosts and sea monsters. It is also reported to be the home of an incredible amount of sharks who may have developed a distinct taste for humans. There is also the story of lost Incan treasure that may still be on the island. These tales and others which cannot be discussed do to their graphic nature have made Palmyra the stuff of legend amongst sailors and Pacific Islanders for centuries. #7. “Vulcan Island”- Vulcan Island in the Philippines isn’t necessarily an island that is shrouded in mystery but it definitely is a mindblowing locale. On the northern Philippine island of Luzon there sits a lake named Taal and in that lake there is an island called Taal Volcano, inside this island is the world’s largest crater lake and inside of this lake there sits yet another island, known as Vulcan Island. Not only is Vulcan Island one of the most fascinating of natural recursion it happens to be located on one of the most active volcanoes in the entire Pacific Ocean. Because of this fact it is incredibly dangerous to visit Vulcan Island as it has been quaking and bubbling consistently since 1991.

Cuba is a tropical paradise. It is the largest and yet least known island in the Caribbean. In recent years it has become famous for its old American cars, Fidel Castro's brand of communism, cigars and rum. Millions of tourists visit each year to enjoy the tropical climate and the wonderful beaches and warm seas. But there is another Cuba, the little known wildlife of this Caribbean island. Over half the plants and animals are found nowhere else on earth. Over 80% of the reptiles and amphibians are uniquely Cuban. They include the smallest four-legged animal on earth and the world's most aggressive crocodile. This programme looks at these little known creatures and investigates how they arrived on Cuba and when? The Story starts in the Caribbean Sea. Cuba has many unspoilt reefs that team with colourful fish. This is due in part to the recent communist regime, for there has been strict control over boats and very limited fishing.. So the reefs have remained pristine, a glimpse of how the rest of the Caribbean looked before development degraded so much.

Jurassic Park may be the first thing that comes to mind when you see Aogashima Island from the air - but yes, THIS IS TOKYO! It's famous for having a volcano inside a volcano surrounded by dense jungle. It's also considered the smallest town in Japan and the hardest place in Japan to get to. There is no direct transportation to Aogashima. These facts are what make Aogashima the best kept secret in Tokyo! ★ The Ogasawara video is out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3TtGXAoTvA Travel 1000km further for Tokyo's distant island paradise! The island is unspoiled. The pristine jungles and beautiful ocean views are like scenes from the movies. HOW TO GET TO AOGASHIMA Air ▶︎ Haneda Airport (Tokyo) to Hachijojima / 50 minutes ▶︎ Helicopter to Aogashima - 20 minutes / 11,530 Yen Note: You have to take the first flight to catch the helicopter or spend the night. Sea (Ferry) ▶︎ Takeshiba Pier (Tokyo) to Hachijojima 11-12 hours / Tokai Kisen Line / ▶︎ Hachijojima to Aogashima / 3 hours / Izu Shoto Kaihatsu Line Note: The ferry to Aogashima is often canceled so don't rely on this if you need to be back to Tokyo for a flight etc. It can be delayed for as long as 1 week depending on weather! WHY IS THIS THE HARDEST PLACE TO GET TO? The town is located 200 meters up off the sea. There is no airport and this island is only accessible by helicopter and ferry. The port is one of the most challenging to dock at in the world so when the sea is rough or the wind is too strong, ferries are often canceled. See more at www.brilliantnews.com Easter Island off the coast of Chile holds many mysteries and hidden secrets. What caused the demise of the Rapa Nui natives? Why did they build all the stone moai statues? Why is this the Earth's Navel? We answer now all of these questions and more. Who were the Rapa Nui natives? Easter Island, or Rapa Nui is thought to have been inhabited by tens of thousands of decedents of Polynesian natives from various tribes. Being one of the remotest islands in the world, when the Europeans discovered it, there were reports of a population of only 3,000 natives. However, Captain Cook was surprised at the amount of spears found about the island, corroborating a theory that the natives were the remnants of a greater community, the survivors of a huge conflict or even a wor. Birdman Contest In an attempt to find peace between the warring tribes, the natives held an annual Birdman Contest. Participants from the different tribes would have to climb down the cliff face, swim to the adjacent island and retrieve an egg from a specific bird, before swimming back to shore. The first tribe to bring back the egg, would rule the island for the year. Were the statues made by the Iluminati? No. Next question. The Moai are statues that the Rapanui made to honor past leaders and some believe to protect the natives from volcanic eruptions, sunamis and even leprosy according to one theory. This explains the Moais' over exaggerated features, as if compensating for the disease's disfiguring symptoms. It has also been discovered that the huge Moai heads strewn about the island have equally huge bodies buried beneath the earth! All made from volcanic rock in the quarries of Rano Raraku, from where they were then transported up to 11 miles to the shore of the island. How did they move the Moai? Captain Cook believed there to have been a population of tens of thousands of Rapanui, for how else could they have moved each Moai 11 miles? One theory is by using ropes and just 18 people it is possible they 'walked' the statues from the quarry to the shore. The Navel of the World Jakob Roggeveen landed on Rapa Nui on Easter Sunday in 1722, and ingeniously named it Easter Island. However, Rapa Nui actually means “the navel of the world.” and among the island's bizarre sculptures is the Navel. A perfectly spherical stone brought by the first ruler of the island, which stops compasses from working in its presence and some believe it possesses spiritual powers... Volcanoes The tiny island of 163 square kilometres, was formed by 3 volcanoes, and has a fourth inactive one and over 70 vent holes. It's no wonder the natives left! There is also a system of glyphs written in Rongorongo. Numerous attempts to decipher them have been made, none successful. What happened to the Rapanui? So what happened to the thousands of natives that Jakob Roggeveen and Captain Cook reported to have seen? The most popular theories are that the natives overexploited their resources, cutting down the ample forests, perhaps aided by Polynesian rats brought in their boats, which fed on the palm roots. The wors between tribes, led to a serious decline in the population and the remainder were captured in raids. Which of these strange theories surprised you the most? Comment Below!

Secrets Of Easter Island - Documentary Easter Island is a Chilean island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle. Easter Island is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapa Nui people. In 1995, UNESCO named Easter Island a World Heritage Site, with much of the island protected within Rapa Nui National Park. Polynesian people settled on Easter Island in the first millennium CE, and created a thriving culture, as evidenced by the moai and other artifacts. However, human activity, the introduction of the Polynesian rat and overpopulation led to gradual deforestation and extinction of natural resources, which caused the demise of the Rapa Nui civilization. By the time of European arrival in 1722, the island's population had dropped to 2,000–3,000 from a high of approximately 15,000 just a century earlier. Diseases carried by European sailors and Peruvian slave raiding of the 1860s further reduced the Rapa Nui population, down to 111 in 1877. Vienna's Danube Island, a river island artificially created some 20 years ago, has become a recreational retreat for tens of thousands of city dwellers. To tourists, it is an attraction praised in every traveller's guide. Sun worshipers, cyclists, skaters and night owls invade the island from the first days of spring until the fading of the autumn sun. No-one associates the island with wildlife and wilderness, and yet, unnoticed by most visitors, a secret army of wild animals has invaded the banks, forest and bushland right in the middle of a big river and a large city. Stone martens, beavers, rabbits, deer, herons, cormorants and black kites, various fishes, toads, frogs and insects have conquered the island and turned it into their own hunting and breeding grounds.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/panorama/7268734.stm New allegations of child abuse in Jersey are being made as police continue their investigations at Haute de la Garenne. Panorama has uncovered a number of alleged abuse cases at another home on the island and tracked down one of the abusers - believed by the police to be dead - but in reality very much alive and living in France. When Haute de la Garenne was closed in 1986 the children were transferred to smaller units - one such unit was Blanche Pierre run by Jane and Alan Maguire, who for ten years opened their doors to troubled, lonely or vulnerable children. Brutal regime Panorama has spoken to seven former residents of the home who all recall abuse. All tell similar stories of being trapped in a brutal regime of physical and mental torture. Former resident Jean Michel recalled: "Me and my sister would always argue over petty little things you know, end up in little squabbles from it, therefore you just sort of had a little sharp tongue, we'd have soap rammed down our throat for it..." "It would be grated all along the back of your teeth and his nails would be all against the top of the roof of your mouth." Severe pain Another former resident of Blanche Pierre, Darren said: "They put Dettol in my mouth and swilled it round and it went down my throat and it burnt my throat. "I could hardly breathe, I was in severe pain, I was screaming because my throat swelled up, I could not breathe and I was burning because it's undiluted Dettol in my mouth and my throat. "(They) didn't even take me to the doctors or anything. I couldn't breathe properly, I couldn't eat properly, I couldn't talk properly and it hurt." A neighbour of the Maguire's recalled some of the treatment given out to the children. Joyce Symons said: "Darren an older child was put in the corner of the playroom and he was left there to stand sometimes all day in the corner and I would be by my kitchen and the window, my kitchen window looks into the playroom and he'd be stood there crying, a beautiful looking child and it used to make me cry and he used to be hit by what I thought was a stick." She said: "Alan Maguire was the one who inflicted the punishment and Jane Maguire would just sit by and let it happen." New job In 1990, two staff complained about the Maguires' behaviour to the authorities who took action after a fashion. The couple were allowed to 'retire' from Blanche Pierre and even sent a letter from the Education Committee thanking them for their "110% commitment and hard work, the proof of which will live on in the children for whom you have shown much love and care". Remarkably, Jane Maguire was then allowed to take up a new job with the local authority which meant she continued to work with children and disadvantaged adults. Years after the first complaints about the Maguires, the police were finally called. Former residents, neighbours and staff gave statements and the case even got as far as a magistrates court. Alan Maguire was said to have been suffering from liver cancer, and the case was eventually abandoned due to "insufficient evidence". Finally after a further year, a confidential report, by the Health and Social Services department, catalogued the extent of the abuse. It found Jane Maguire guilty of gross misconduct and recommended her dismissal. Nine years after the first complaints she finally left social services. The police have long believed that Alan Maguire died of a terminal illness. However Panorama tracked both he and his wife down to a small village in the South of France. Alan Maguire gave Panorama a frosty reception. When challenged he got in his car and drove away. No apology for the victims of abuse.

Además, viajan a Chiloé a tocar. Tracklist: 01. The Secrets 00:00 02. Chaos and Fury 01:22 03. Rising of the Island 05:19 04. Family's from all over visit Disney, but do they know Disney has many hidden secrets? These are 13 shocking Disney park Secrets. Subscribe for weekly wacky videos and learn interesting facts about the world with awesome top 10 lists and other amazing videos. 7 - Animal Kingdom – At one point the famous Animal Kingdom was supposed to include a separate attraction within the attraction called “Beastly Kingdom.” This would be dedicated to mythical creatures and probably include some animatronics. Even though that idea never made its way to fruition there is a subtle nod to the project on the sign for Animal Kingdom. In the middle of a rhino and elephant you can see the silhouette of a dragon. We met you’ve never noticed THAT before! 6 - Smellitizers – If you’ve ever visited a Disney park and noticed a certain smell in a certain place, well that’s no accident. Smellitizers are devices that can be found in the tunnels below the parks and are located throughout Disney parks to emit certain smells in certain areas. Some of the most obvious smells are the smell of fresh baked cookies and vanilla on Main Street, fresh citrus on the Soarin’ ride, and a salty smell on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Some of the less obvious, but definitely noteworthy smells are the smell of honey on Pooh’s adventures and burning wood on Spaceship Earth. 5 - Cinderella's castle – Cinderella’s castle may be the most well-known landmark in all of Disney parks. Everyone knows what it looks like and everyone knows where it’s located. What not many people know is that hidden inside the castle is a private guest suite, reserved for contest winners only. You cannot book this suite and it is given to families for use about once every two weeks. The suite has only been used approximately 600 times. Not only do you get a car to drop you at the Magic Kingdom, but you also get a personal guide to accompany you around the park acting as a personal FASTpass for rides and giving you all the information about the park you could ever want. Inside the suite are Disney character relics, such as Cinderella’s glass slipper and Captain Hook’s telescope, as well as a television disguised as a mirror that you use a magic wand to turn on. 4 - The Grey Stuff – A line from the song “Be Our Guest” in the movie Beauty and the Beast has the Lumiere sing “Try the grey stuff, it’s delicious – don’t believe us, ask the dishes!” Now you can try the grey stuff too! When dining at the Be Our Guest restaurant at Disney World, you can order the grey stuff, which is some sort of cookies and cream grey mousse. Originally not located on the menu, it’s now a featured dessert and you should really do yourself a favor and try it, because Lumiere was not lying – it is delicious! 3 - Tom Sawyer Island – This ride, located at Disney World, is a boat ride that takes you over to an island with a Tom Sawyer theme. It’s a very quiet, some would say boring ride. Boring, until you realize that you could walk away with a pretty awesome prize. The island supposedly has paintbrushes hidden all over the place, to recreate Tom Sawyers chore to whitewash his Aunt Polly’s fence. If you’re lucky enough to find a paintbrush, bring it over to your boat driver and they’ll reward you with a fastpass to any one ride in the park. Don’t go crazy looking for all the brushes, though. It’s only good for one brush per family. 2 - Club 33 – Club 33 is one of the cooler secrets within Disneyland. It’s located in the middle of New Orleans Square and is recognized only by a plate attached to the building that says “33.” To be allowed entry into the club, you must be a member, and to become a member you need to get on a waitlist that is estimated to be years long and it’s roughly $25,000 to join plus $10,000 in yearly dues. Some of the perks to the club, is –obviously, access to the club itself – alcoholic beverages, since the park is for the most park dry except for certain areas, early park admission, valet parking at the resorts and access to private events held at the park. 1 - Walt’s Apartment – When Walt Disney was designing and constructing Disneyland he wanted to build a special apartment hidden from the chaos of the park, but still within the park. He built the apartment above the Main Street Firehouse. The Disney family would spend time in the apartment, entertaining guests or Walt would do quiet work – his desk was set up against a window overlooking Main Street. A lamp in the window would be left on when Walt was present in the apartment which was a fun thing for guests to see. Since his passing, the light is always burning in the window as a tribute.

Spared by the ice-age, overlooked by an expanding civilisation for hundreds of years, saved at the last minute from a total sell out to tourism - that is the still little known Carinthian «Nockberge» region. Austria's oldest landscape is a green island surrounded by young, dramatic peaks. The windswept heights have been cattle pastures from time immemorial, and over the centuries a wonderful harmony has develop ed between wildlife and cattle. Wild nature and the ancient culture of mountain farming distinguish the character of the Nockberge National Park.

Subscribe to watch full natural history and science documentaries! A new documentary is uploaded every week. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesecretsof... Twitter: https://twitter.com/NatureUniversum It was only two hundred years ago that Tasmania was a British colony known as Van Diemens Land -- and so remote that its only use was as a penal settlement for the most hardened criminals. Times have definitely changed, yet that remote untamed island of history is never far away. Today Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, is a bustling modern city and busy port. Mount Wellington rises straight out of the city to more than 1200 metres. It's possible-- in just a little over half an hour - to drive from a city centre restaurant to a wilderness where you could freeze to death. Even in summer snow can fall here. To the people of Hobart, this place is simply The Mountain - a finger of a vast and trackless wilderness pointing right at the heart of the city -- so it's not surprising that Tasmania's wild heritage plays a central role in the lives of the island's human inhabitants.
