10 Most Dangerous Water Animals In The World ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/vHN6qB For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] There are many different types of creatures that live in streams, lakes, seas and oceans. And while many of these creatures are harmless, there are many that are incredibly dangerous if you happen to have an encounter with them. These dangerous animals lurk beneath the surface of the water in a world vastly different than ours, and must be deadly to survive. Join us as we take a look at 10 of the most dangerous water creatures. 10. Australian Box Jellyfish – This creature is not one to be messed around with if you happen to swim into a swarm of them. And while they may seem harmless, the Australian box jellyfish is considered to be the most venomous marine animal in the world. They have tentacles that are covered with tiny darts called nematocysts, and they are loaded with poison. 9. Flower Urchin – Beautiful but deadly, these sea urchins are extremely venomous. They look like a bouquet of small flowers; to which they get their name from. They feed on invertebrates, sponges, and dead fish, and have well developed jaws for grinding up their prey. 8. The Saltwater Crocodile – Evolving around 200 million years in the Mesozoic epoch, crocodiles have far outlived the dinosaurs. The Salt water crocodile is the world’s largest reptile, and they have been known to grow up to 27 feet long and weigh 2,465 lbs. 7. Textile Cone Snail – Mother nature teaches us that anything in nature that is beautiful, is most likely deadly, and a warning to predators and humans to not touch or disturb them. This holds true for the Textile Cone Snail. 6. The Sea Snake – These highly venomous marine snakes are closely related and belong to the same family as the cobra. There are two independently evolved groups: the true sea snakes which are related to Australian terrestrial elapids, and the sea kraits which are related to Asian cobras. 5. The Lionfish – Lionfish are skilled hunters, using specialized bilateral swim bladder muscles to provide exquisite control of location in the water column, allowing the fish to alter its center of gravity to better attack prey. The lionfish then spreads its large pectoral fins and swallows its prey in a single motion. 4. The Stingray – Stingrays are a group of rays, which are cartilaginous fish related to sharks, and are one of the oceans deadliest creatures. Most stingrays have one or more barbed stingers on their tails, which are used exclusively for self-defense. 3. Blue-Ringed Octopus – This octopus has some of the most striking colors of any ocean creature. They get their name from the brightly blue colored rings on its body. 2. Needlefish – These strange looking creatures are very slender, and have a single dorsal fin, placed far back on the body. Needlefish are capable of making short jumps out of the water at up to 37 mph. Since Needlefish swim near the surface, they often leap over the decks of shallow boats rather than going around. 1. The Moray Eel - Most attacks stem from disruption of a moray's burrow to which they react strongly, but an increasing number of accidents also occur during hand feeding of morays by divers, an activity often used by dive companies to attract tourists.

10. Electric Eel You must have heard about them in your science class when in school and many of you had been wondering about their existence. Well, here you go they actually exist and not only exist but, true to their name, they exhibit powerful electric shock; nature has gifted the respective creature with the ability for its survival. As per the resources, the electric eel produces up to 600 volts of electric current, which is enough to kill a man or any other living being. 9. Tiger Fish Apparent from its name, Tiger Fish is one of the most dangerous predator fishes with razor sharp teeth and ability of a true fighter and hunter. The fish is commonly found in the Congo River and Lake Tanganiyaka, situated in Africa; the tiger fish attacks in packs and feasts on large animals. Two of the most widely known tiger fishes are the goliath tiger fish and the tiger fish both of which are the largest among their specie. 8. Goonch Fish Goonch fish is found in the Kali River running between India and Nepal; the fish is a member of catfish family with dangerously sharp teeth and over seven feet long structure. What makes Goonch fish even more dangerous and horrific is its awareness of the taste of human flesh. The alarming number of disappearances and drowning in the Kali River is attributed to this giant man-eater. 7. The Stonefish The Stonefish is not only one of the most dangerous fish but it is also one of the weirdest sea creatures; Stonefish is an unnoticeable fish as it resembles the surface of a stone and could not be recognised unless you have stepped on it. Stonefish is known to be the most poisonous fish on the living earth, the pain caused by its sting is incurable and the victim has to suffer for hours. There is a slight discrepancy in the belief that whether or whether not a Stonefish kills though some believe that its only the pain while others argue that it’s poison can kill within two hours. 6. The Snakehead Fish The Snakehead fish is the original inhabitant of China, Russia and Korea while it can find its way to other countries and their ecosystems too. Once it finds its way to any lake or pond, it eats up all the living beings in the water, after ‘cleaning’ the water, it gets out to the land and eats whatever comes its way until it reaches another water reservoir. 5. Vandellia Cirrhosa The fish is the true and exact embodiment of the notion ‘Size doesn’t matter’, the fish is about 2.5 cm long and 3.5 mm wide and is also known as ‘the toothpick fish’. The fish causes relatively huge, and we really mean huge, calamity to man; Vandellia is attracted to blood and urine as it extracts its main source of food from it, which is urea. The fish easily passes through anus, vagina or penis and starts sucking blood causing extreme pain to the victim. In many cases amputation is the only remedy to it, which is even more horrifying. 4. Piranha Remember the movie named Piranha having small fishes attacking the beachers? Yes we are talking about the same fish; Piranha’s origination is in South America and Brazil. Similar to Vandellia Cirrhosa, Piranha is small in size with greater extent of danger, it is known for its noxious bite force as it bites its prey to bones in no time. 3. Pufferfish Pufferfish is ranked amongst the topmost poisonous fish found till the present date; the fish has poison reservoir of tetrodotoxin in its liver, ovaries, intestines and skin. The tetrodotoxin poison affects the brain and may cause weakness, paralysis and death even at a minimum consumption of the poison, which makes it a highly dangerous fish. 2. Box Jellyfish Box Jellyfish is different in a number of ways than their other family members as they have more developed nervous system and has real pair of eyes. It has long flagella and deadly poison, according to resources the Box Jellyfish poison can cause death within few minutes while the marks left by its sting is for eternity. Its poison attacks the cardiac activity as the victim experiences extremely low heart rate. 1. Payara – The Most Dangerous Fish Payara is also known as the ‘vampire fish’ and are even more dangerous and vicious predators than the Piranhas. It may grow up to four feet and are absolutely capable of preying fishes nearly of their own size. Apart from having sharp teeth and two front outer tusks, Payara is the only fish that is capable of devouring Piranhas, which marks their deadliness higher than Piranhas.

Danger In The Water - Alaskan Fishing Documentary - History TV

40:50
Danger In The Water - Alaskan Fishing Documentary - History TV Fishing is the activity of trying to catch fish. Fish are normally caught in the wild. Techniques for catching fish include hand gathering, spearing, netting, angling and trapping. Fishing may include catching other aquatic animals, such as molluscs, cephalopods, crustaceans, and echinoderms. The term is not normally applied to catching farmed fish, or to aquatic mammals, and marine mammals, such as whales, where the term whaling is more appropriate. According to United Nations FAO statistics, the total number of commercial fishermen and fish farmers is estimated to be 38 million. Fisheries and aquaculture provide direct and indirect employment to over 500 million people in developing countries.[1] In 2005, the worldwide per capita consumption of fish captured from wild fisheries was 14.4 kilograms, with an additional 7.4 kilograms harvested from fish farms.[2] In addition to providing food, modern fishing is also a recreational pastime. Fishing is an ancient practice that dates back to at least the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic period about 40,000 years ago.[3] Isotopic analysis of the skeletal remains of Tianyuan man, a 40,000-year-old modern human from eastern Asia, has shown that he regularly consumed freshwater fish. 10 Biggest Sea Creatures Ever Caught

05:42
You won't believe that fishermen actually caught these gigantic sea monsters! Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg SyFy recently aired the third film in their so-bad-its-good “Sharknado” series, prompting some to wonder if airborne, tornado-based sharks could actually be real. Okay, so no one is really wondering that. Still, though, the ocean continues to represent a great unknown to us, providing home to countless species, many of which remain a mystery to humanity. The more we learn about what lurks deep below the surface, the more we realize still remains uncovered. With two-thirds of the Earth’s surface covered in water, it stands to reason that a great deal of that space remains unexplored. Of course, just because humankind hasn’t covered every iota of ground along the ocean floor, it doesn’t mean that those areas are uninhabited. All we know for sure is that the truly deepest depths of the world’s oceans continue to offer surprises, even as scientific technology becomes increasingly advanced. New species unlike any others known before are routinely discovered, with entirely new and alien biomes in extreme environments that no life had even been thought possible have challenged our very notions of what life is and how it has evolved. Amidst the cold darkness of a low-lying ocean area with depths that no sunlight can penetrate lies an alien world of incredibly rare and mysterious species. While many are simple, harmless omnivores, they share the ocean floor with some pretty unsettling forces. These ocean-based creatures – those that we know about, anyway – change everything we think we know about fish. Each one has at least one predominant feature that stands out as being unlike anything seen before. Think you know sharks? Well, how about one with a saw-like nose or a frilly, eel-like body. Think you’ve seen some big fish? How about a 17-metre long swimmer or a 900-pound squid or even a 5,000-pound behemoth sunfish? Lurking within the ocean are a number of deadly, threatening, vicious creatures that are naturally designed and programmed to hunt and stalk their prey. Thankfully, most of these monsters live at pressures that humans could never survive at – not that they would survive long down there, anyway. In recent years, Hollywood has sparked a fascination with zombies, aliens and other forces that exist beyond the realms of our planet and that are not steeped in reality. Despite that, some of the strangest and most terrifying creatures in the universe lie beneath the surface of bodies of water with which we are, at least partially, familiar. As we sit on a beach staring out at the natural beauty of the Pacific Ocean, we remain blissfully oblivious to all that lurks within. This list seeks to open the door to an entire world of deep sea activity, featuring a cast of creepy and spooky characters that few even know exist. These 10 fish, some of whom may seem to be borne out of your darkest nightmares, are all very real and may give you second thoughts the next time you foray into the ocean. And these are just the ones we know about… Check out these other awesome videos! 10 Shockingly Large Creatures That Actually Exist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9odlL5Ti3dc 10 Things That Will Happen When Humans Go Extinct https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ml_awEqbEE Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheRichest.org Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheRichest_Com Instagram: http://instagram.com/therichest For more videos and articles visit: http://www.therichest.com/

Global warming & overfishing: SEA THE TRUTH – the big danger for ocean life (HiQ)

01:00:15
http://www.GlobeTransformer.org or http://www.SeaTheTruth.nl/en/ Got some overweight over the holidays? http://gordr.com/redteadetox (NOTE for the YouTube-Team: we have uploaded this movie with the permission of the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation) BACKGROUND Sea the Truth is based on numerous scientific publications that examine the problems of seas and oceans. Below follows an overview of the themes addressed in the film and a brief explanation. DEEP TROUBLE: WHALE MORTALITY CAUSED BY OVERFISHING According to a report of the New Zealand news channel 3News sea mammals, among which whales, are dying of malnutrition. The makers claim that this is caused by overfishing. Watch the report here: http://www.3news.co.nz/Deep-Trouble-/tabid/371/articleID/169002/Default.aspx FISHING POLICY AND QUOTA Fishing policy around the world is destructive. Recommendations from scientists on quotas are ignored by policy makers, wealthy countries plunder the fishing territories of poor countries and bottom trawlers sow destruction all over the seafloor with their dragnets. In Europe, 88% of fish stocks have been overharvested, such as the blue fin tuna which sadly is threatened with extinction. EFFECTS OF FISHING ON MARINE ECOSYSTEMS In addition to the effect on the fish stocks, fishing also affects all other organisms in the same habitat or ecosystem. Whether the fish being harvested are predatory or prey, the balance of the ecosystem is disrupted and this can have serious consequences. The degree of disruption strongly depends on the fishing method employed. BYCATCH The term bycatch has come to be used to refer to fish caught unintentionally when fishermen fish for commercial fish. These kinds of fish are not interesting to sell and as a consequence they are thrown back into the ocean either death or mutilated. The average bycatch worldwide is about 40.4% of the total amount of fish being caught. This means that 3 kilos of consumed fish brings about 2 kilos of bycatch. In total, 37 billion kilos of fish per year is wasted bycatch. FISH SUFFERING People once thought that fish could not feel anything when they are caught. This idea was probably motivated because fish are cold blooded; this is in contrast with humans who are warm blooded. However, the ability to feel pain does not have anything to do with body temperature. From research studying the behavior of fish, as well as the study of anatomy and physiology, it turns out that fish have feelings and are in fact able to feel pain. This means that the current methods to catch and kill fish are in truth a torture for fish, moreover captured fish die of suffocation: a process that can take up to several minutes or hours. THE PLASTIC SOUP Between Hawaii and San Francisco floats an enormous amount of rubbish -- a plastic soup with a surface area of 8.6 million square kilometres. To compare: This is 33 times greater than the surface area of the Netherlands (41,528 km2). This plastic soup was 'discovered' by Charles Moore when he sailed through this area with his boat and found himself surrounded day in day out by plastic waste. He later returned with scientific equipment to determine the soup's total size. The plastic soup is a huge threat to a number of marine animals and mammals. TOXINS IN FISH We're told we should eat fish twice a week as it is packed with nutrition. These healthy nutrients are however easily obtained from other food sources, whereas fish may also contain large amounts of toxins. Mercury and dioxins 'enjoy' the status of most researched toxins in fish.

10 Sea Monsters ATTACKING A Boat!

Check out these 10 sea monsters attacking a boat! This top 10 list of ocean creatures like whales and great white sharks attacking a ship shows some bizarre stories caught on camera! Great White Shark If you’ve been on a boat out on the ocean, a Jaws attack has probably crossed your mind. Even if it’s just barely!! Then of course you rationalize that the chances of that happening are practically 0. Practically. That’s what Terry Selwood, a 73-year-old Australian fisherman learned in 2017, when a great white shark leapt out of the water, into his boat!! 9. An Eagle Ray Rays seem like beautiful, serene creatures - but they can be extremely dangerous, even if you’re on the relative safety of a large tourist boat. In 2011, Jenny Hausch had rented a 26-foot catamaran for her family to take a trip in Florida. Sounds really nice right? 8. Swordfish In 2017, Alan Pope, a British tourist, was on a boat trip getting ready to go snorkeling in Indonesia when everything went horribly wrong. Without any warning, a swordfish jumped out of the water and into the boat, and impaled his neck with its bill. The end snapped off, and left six inches of the sword still jabbed inside his neck, just millimeters from instantly killing him. 7. Sperm Whales The Gulf of Alaska is a prime fishing location, especially for those trying to catch black cod. In these waters, though, there is a much larger creature that also likes eating the fish- sperm whales. They are the ocean’s largest toothed predators, and while they are quite capable of catching food for themselves, they much prefer taking the easy route. 6. Giant Squid Mostly creatures of legend, giant squids are mentioned in many old mariners tales of dangers at sea. But they are rarely seen, let alone involved in attacking boats. So when a team of French sailors came face to face with one in 2003, they almost didn’t believe it!! 5. Bull Shark You might think that a great white shark would be the most problematic shark species to boats, but there’s another type that can be more aggressive, and more likely to risk an encounter. 4. Jellyfish Sometimes it’s the smallest things that can have the biggest effect, something that became ever so apparent in 2017 when Chinese scientists were investigating why their aircraft carriers were experiencing difficulties. They found that large swarms of Jellyfish were getting caught up in the propulsion systems! This would stop the ships dead in their tracks, or cause the engines to overheat and cause extreme damage. 3. Mako Shark This next story took place just last year, 2017 in Long Island, New York. A fishing charter boat was taking guests to the location where they find the widest variety of fish, when suddenly a Mako shark jumped onto the side of the boat. Unfortunately for the fish, it managed to get itself stuck in the handrail of the boat and, despite thrashing about, it couldn’t free itself. 2. Black Marlin Game fishing is a popular pastime for many enthusiasts, but when you’re chasing after some of the largest and most powerful marine creatures on earth, you have to be ready for the unpredictable. Again last year, things went very wrong indeed for a fishing boat off the coast of Panama. They had caught a black marlin, a species that can weight up to 1500 pounds and reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. 1. Killer Whale If you’ve ever watched a nature documentary that’s featured Killer Whales, you’ll be all too familiar how organised and clever they can be. Pods work together to catch prey, and even tilt ice flows to trap seals. When they turn these skills towards human activity, the results can be frightening. We had to shoot this HUGE fish for our safety (100 Pounder!)

16:32
Last day in Alaska. Got the chance of a lifetime to target some of the most massive fish on the West Coast. Had a 40 Caliber Glock on board in case we came across a "barndoor" Halibut. If these massive fish flop around on deck they can easily break a leg or cause a serious injury. The goal was to incapacitate the fish so it would flop around with 5 people on board. Their slime makes everything slippery and very dangerous if flopping around on board especially out at sea. What an amazing trip. Will try to visit again next season! If You Ever See This on the Beach, Cry for Help!

How do you recognize something that you can touch and something you have to run away from as fast as possible? Here is a list of the most dangerous sea creatures you can meet and how to recognize them! There are so many different species living in the ocean! Some of them are beautiful, some are deadly, and some are both. TIMESTAMPS Fire Coral 0:40 Flower Urchin 1:20 Cone Snail 1:50 Portuguese Man-of-War 2:32 Snea snakes 3:54 Lionfish 4:51 Chironex 5:39 Surgeonfish 6:15 Indonesian needlefish 6:59 Triggerfish 7:34 SUMMARY - Fire Coral. These small organisms can sting, and the effect can be not very serious and it can be quite bad. A stung person may have severe pains, feel nauseated and even vomit, which is not the best thing to do when you are underwater. - Flower Urchin is both very beautiful and very deadly. It contains toxins that can cause anaphylactic shock, convulsions and finally death. You can get poisoned if you step on it when you are in the sea or the ocean. - Scientists say that just one drop of the cone snail’s poison is enough to kill 20 people! Just one drop! - The most mind-blowing fact about Man-of-War is that technically we should call it Men-of-War, and refer to it not as «it», but «they», and here is why: it’s an animal that is made up of a colony of organisms cooperating together. Man-of-war has tentacles that can be 30 feet long, which it uses to paralyze and kill fish and other small creatures. - Sea snakes are much more venomous than their land-living friends. As it turns out, they have to be like that because they hunt fish, so what they need to do is immobilize their prey very quickly not to let it escape. - Many people call the lionfish the most beautiful sea creature in the world. You can find them in the Caribbean and Eastern Atlantic. Lionfishes are not deadly — they do have a venom, but it’s not lethal. However, the pain you will experience if you get stung is so severe that people say you might wish you were dead. - Chironex doesn’t have any teeth, but it’s dangerous as hell. If a person gets stung, they will have excruciating pain, red inflammation in the stung area and heart dysfunction. - Surgeonfish are easily spooked, so you should be extra careful if you see one of them. Don’t make any unexpected fast moves. The good news is, surgeonfish are not aggressive unless, of course, you provoke them. - Indonesian needlefish live in tropical and subtropical waters of the oceans. They, as the name suggests, have a very sharp, needle-like beak, and they are especially dangerous when they hurl themselves out of the water. - Triggerfish is mostly friendly, but only until you are a threat to its nest. The most dangerous are females — if you approach its nest even accidentally, it will bite you. Thankfully, the bites aren’t poisonous, but triggerfish have extremely sharp teeth, so the injuries it can cause need serious medical attention. Green Sea Turtles in Danger - Moreton Bay

06:54
In Australia, a highly toxic, alien invader is attacking the protected habitat of Moreton Bays endangered green turtles. Destroying all the vegetation in its path, the notorious fireweed is wreaking havoc on the turtles natural diet and challenging the comeback of these ancient creatures. Deploying National Geographics Crittercam®, researchers learn how the turtles are coping, and search for ways to protect them from the invading slime.

10 Most Dangerous Waters in the World

09:07
For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/gYLyzW ################################ ► Website: http://vid.io/xcRS ► Facebook: https://goo.gl/G0HVYw ► Twitter: http://vid.io/xcRO ► Google +: http://vid.io/xcRM ################################ The world is 70 percent water, so it's probably a good thing that the stuff is good for us. We can drink it, swim in it, grow food with it, and just plain live because of it. However, certain bodies of water are shockingly mean to us. Interacting with some lakes and rivers can hurt us, make us sick, or even kill us. Hello guys and today we're talking about 10 Bodies Of Water That Want You Dead #10. Boiling Lake Dominica Whoever named this place was certainly no fan of subtlety: Boiling Lake is exactly what it sounds like. Discovered in 1870 by two Englishmen, temperatures taken five years later ranged anywhere from 82 to 91.5 °C. #9. Citarum River West Java, Indonesia Here we have a body of water that can destroy us, but only because we screwed it up. Citarum River might well be the most polluted, trash-filled bit of water on the planet. #8. Rio Tinto Spain Rio Tinto is among the most acidic bodies of water around, with a pH balance of 2, at best. This means the Rio Tinto is as strong as stomach acid and is more than powerful enough to kill any fish that dare swim in it. #7. Lake Kivu Of DRC And Rwanda Three hundred meters (1,000 ft) below the surface of Lake Kivu lies a ticking time bomb. Over 250 cubic kilometers (60 cubic miles) of carbon dioxide, along with around 65 cubic kilometers (15 cubic miles) of methane gas, lurks under this body of water, enough to provide electricity to several countries. #6. The Rivers Of Johannesburg South Africa Catching E. coli is no fun under normal circumstances; now imagine you were literally swimming in the stuff. #5. Blackwater River Virginia, USA Too much water can be a bad thing, even if the water can't kill you otherwise. #4. Tualatin River Oregon, USA Oregon's Tualatin River is not the place to be if you want to take your dogs for a swim; close to a dozen pups die there every year from exposure to toxic blue-green algae. #3. Lake Karachay Russia Like a supermodel with a bomb strapped underneath her bodice, Russia's Lake Karachay is pristine, gorgeous, and incredibly deadly. It is, without question, the most radioactive body of water on the planet. #2. Belle Fourche River And South Dakota, USA Belle Fourche isn't poisonous, boiling, or radioactive. However, it is turbulent and wild, at least in one particular area. #1. Potomac River Maryland–West Virginia Border, USA Though the only thing most people know about the Potomac is that Washington, DC is situated on it, the legendary river can also be associated with something else: horrible deaths. Thank you for watching!!! Does anyone want to come over and swim with me? Write in comments what do you think of these bodies of water. Join our channel for more interesting videos!

Dangers of eating Farmed Fish; Pollutants, toxins & pesticides and their side effects

54:28
All credits to a documentary called "Poisonous Fish: The Big Health Lie" that aired in November 2014, produced by Austrian national TV (ORF) Farm-raised fish are given antibiotics because of crowded conditions. Eating large quantities of antibiotic-filled meat and fish, will lead to diseases are becoming resistant to antibiotic treatment. Fish farmers also treat their fish with pesticides to combat sea lice. Sea lice from fish farms kill up to 95 percent of migrating juvenile wild salmon. Pesticides that have been banned for decades have concentrated in the fat of various marine life. Dioxin levels in farm-raised salmon are 11 times higher than those in wild salmon. Fish feed and fish waste accumulate on the seafloor creating a perfect breeding ground for bacteria that threaten other marine life.

14 Ocean's Deadliest Creatures

07:51
Here are the top 14 dangerous and some even poisonous creatures in the ocean it's terrifying to think they are under there waiting!! 7. Megalodon Megalodon is an extinct species of shark that lived millions of years ago. They were a lot like the great white sharks of today only much bigger. While great whites can reach a length of 20 feet, Megalodon’s could reportedly reach a ridiculous length of nearly 60 feet. Their teeth have been found across the globe from Australia to Japan and as far north as England and Denmark. 6. Killer Whales Being an apex predator means you have no natural predators. Essentially these are the animals at the top of the food chain. Killer, or Orca, whales are considered apex predators and have been known to kill great white sharks, leopard seals, and even other whales. Like wolves, they have a tendency to hunt in packs. Wild orcas don't pose any threat to humans, but there have been incidents in which captive orcas have killed or seriously injured their handlers at marine theme parks. These events highlight the fact that people should probably stop keeping killer whales in captivity rather than any indication that orcas are potentially dangerous to humans. 5. Stingrays Stingrays are usually very passive and gentle around human beings. But if they feel vulnerable in any way they have barbed stingers on their tails that inflict notoriously painful stings that can be deadly when hit in the chest or abdomen. Since stingrays spend a lot of time camouflaging on the seafloor humans often step on them accidentally and end up with a very sore foot to show for it. The world just recognized the ten year anniversary of popular wildlife expert Steve Irwin’s death, who was fatally stung by a stingray on September 4, 2006. 4. Leopard Seal Most seals are relatively harmless and pose no threat to human beings. Leopard seals, however, are not your average run of the mill seal. They are the only seals that eat warm-blooded prey, and the females are larger than the males, another oddity amongst seals. They eat penguins, smaller seals and squid using their powerful jaws, sharp teeth, and clever hunting tactics. In 2003 a British marine biologist was fatally attacked by a leopard seal while snorkeling off of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was the first time a fatal seal attack was recorded, and though seal attacks are rare scientists speculate that the more humans interact with these seals, the more attacks there will be in the future. 3. Box Jellyfish Amongst the world’s most poisonous creatures, this unassuming ocean dweller is responsible for many fatalities annually. Many countries don’t require death certificates, so the exact number isn’t known, but judging from the fact that 20 to 40 people die every year in the Philippines alone, it’s safe to assume that box jellyfish are one of the ocean’s deadliest creatures. Their tentacles are covered with cnidocyst, which contains a tiny dart loaded with a poison that can cause a rapid spike in blood pressure leading to a potentially fatal heart attack. These facts have led some to call the box jellyfish the world’s most venomous creature. 2. Sharks When talking about the ocean’s deadliest predators, sharks are usually the first creatures to come to people’s minds. Though their reputation does have some basis in reality, it is cultural references like the Jaws movie franchise and the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week that have ballooned the shark’s reputation to all new somewhat undeserving heights. There are around 500 species of sharks, but only three, the great white, tiger and bull sharks are responsible for double-digit fatalities. From 1948 to early 2016 there were 2,899 total unprovoked shark attacks recorded around the world, 548 of which were fatal. In comparison, you are more likely to be killed by a falling aircraft or riding a horse. 1. Saltwater Crocodile The saltwater crocodile has two things going for it that help to make them the ocean’s deadliest. These beasts are the largest reptiles on the planet, reaching weights of up to 2,600 pounds and have the most powerful bite on earth, ten times stronger than that of the great white shark. Of all crocodiles, this territorial species is the most likely to treat humans as prey. There are a few fatal saltwater crocodile attacks per year in Australia, with many more attacks from different areas of the world that are believed to go unreported.
