B2B Purchasing Negotiation Five Strategies to Reduce Vendor Prices

The following video outlines five purchasing and procurement strategies all geared towards lowering vendor prices and or reducing supply chain and inventory management costs. These strategies are put forth from someone who has worked in sales and marketing for 20 years and wanted to combine the best strategies employed by the best purchasing negotiation teams. In essence, these strategies come from those purchasing and procurement agents I have negotiated with. They include the most successful strategies employed against me. The first includes not tipping your hand and or broadcasting your needs too soon in the negotiation process with a salesperson. Instead, nail down your price and then use your requests, needs and or concession to reduce pricing. For instance, agree upon a final price and then ask for a discount or reduced price for 1) prepaying total or a portion of your purchase, 2) prompt payment incentives like net-10 day terms 1 to 2 percent discount or 3) increasing volumes or committing to long-term supply contracts or orders. The second tip includes avoiding using veiled threats - which are simply threats you have no intention of following through on. When you threaten vendors too much without ever following through on a threat, then you are simply training them not to take your threats seriously. Third, match a high-value concession for a high-value concession. In this case, come up with a list of requests and or "must-haves" as outcomes from the price negotiation. When the salesperson makes a request, make sure you counter with one of your own of equal value. Fourth, when it comes to getting price reductions from a salesperson, you have to sometimes appeal to their better nature. In this case, add a little personal touch to your negotiations. Ask for a price reduction by outlining the pressures and demands that are placed upon you as a purchasing agent. In this case, you have to attain a certain inventory cost structure so ask your salesperson to help you attain that. Finally, keep your vendor honest by constantly going out for competitive bids. Even the best of vendors can become complacent. However, if they know you know as much about pricing in the market as they do, then those vendors will be less likely to take advantage of you.

Type in the name of a product that you are interested in selling. In this video I used vitamin pills as an example. Step 2: Because a lot of suppliers have duplicate listings on Alibaba for the same item (because it increases their presence in the Alibaba search engine) you will need to filter the results by clicking on “browse by suppliers.” Step 3: To filter the results down further, search by “Gold Suppliers.” Most suppliers will do this because it has become basically a prerequisite for having new buyers contact them. It doesn’t cost them much money to do this, so the results will only be filtered by a small amount. Step 4 (OPTIONAL): If the list of suppliers is still too long, then click to filter the results by “assessed supplier.” This is only necessary in very popular niches where you have a large number of suppliers that you need to filter down to a manageable amount. Step 5: Contact 10-20 suppliers at least. If you have time, then contact more. The more you contact, the better. It would need to meet these specifications: * Specification (e.g size) * Specification (e.g. quantity) * Specification (e.g. colour) We have been researching different companies in China that manufacture [INSERT ITEM] and we think that your company could be a great supplier for it. We would like to get some more information and have a few questions that we would like you to please answer: * Can we please get a sample of the product as soon as possible. The Alibaba response rate only takes into account how fast they respond within Alibaba’s email system, and it doesn’t take into account how fast they reply to personal emails. This is not a good indicator of how responsive they will be to private communication, which is all you should care about. Tip #2 on how to find a supplier on Alibaba: Avoid manufacturers that try to vet your business. If a manufacturer comes back and starts asking questions about your business, clearly skeptical of the size of your company, it is best to move on. Manufacturers that do this will usually decline to work with you as they are only to work with other large companies, so you don’t want to waste your time. Tip #3 on how to find a supplier on Alibaba: It is OK to work directly with a sales rep - if they offer you a better deal. When you are looking to find a supplier on Alibaba, you’ll discover that sales reps often have inflated prices (due to commission cuts). But occasionally, a sales rep will have a better relationship with a factory and so are able to negotiate lower prices. They will also often have good english, making communication easier. Vet sales reps and treat them as equals during the process of picking and choosing the right supplier.

Furthermore, it is not easy to capture the accurate demand and market share at the downstream of supply chain in analytic models. As a result, the integration and synchronization of supply chain production and customer purchasing behaviors have not been fully understood. Given this research gap and challenge, we developed an integrated production control and customer purchasing behavior simulation model with analytic insights to better facilitate the study. Specifically, at the production/inventory control side, the newsvendor model is adopted due to its popularity and analytical simplicity. For each selling cycle, the product company determines the production or ordering amount with the goal to maximize its expected profit. Competition of two companies is considered given the shared consumer market. At the market (demand) side, consumer purchasing behaviors are explicitly formulated via the motivation function, which is impacted by various factors including product price, quality, advertisement, and social network influences. Agent-based simulation technique is used to model the consumer market, where each customer has various states for adopting one product or the other during the simulation run. For the implementation, AnyLogic software is employed, which provides the capability to control various key parameters over the simulation run. Experiment results demonstrated 1) the customer susceptibility to product price, quality, advertisement and social network influence, and 2) trade-offs between company’s profit gain over its investment spent.

Furthermore, it is not easy to capture the accurate demand and market share at the downstream of supply chain in analytic models. As a result, the integration and synchronization of supply chain production and customer purchasing behaviors have not been fully understood. Given this research gap and challenge, we developed an integrated production control and customer purchasing behavior simulation model with analytic insights to better facilitate the study. Specifically, at the production/inventory control side, the newsvendor model is adopted due to its popularity and analytical simplicity. For each selling cycle, the product company determines the production or ordering amount with the goal to maximize its expected profit. Competition of two companies is considered given the shared consumer market. At the market (demand) side, consumer purchasing behaviors are explicitly formulated via the motivation function, which is impacted by various factors including product price, quality, advertisement, and social network influences. Agent-based simulation technique is used to model the consumer market, where each customer has various states for adopting one product or the other during the simulation run. For the implementation, AnyLogic software is employed, which provides the capability to control various key parameters over the simulation run. Experiment results demonstrated 1) the customer susceptibility to product price, quality, advertisement and social network influence, and 2) trade-offs between company’s profit gain over its investment spent.

Having a place to call your own—whether you’re going to be there for four years or forever—is an essential part of the American dream. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers plenty of great programs to help those who have served in the military get there, but the process isn’t foolproof. People can (and do) make mistakes buying their first home, second home, or 10th home. You can avoid your own tale of woes by avoiding these 5 mistakes, even before you start your home search. Mistake No 1: Not getting a Realtor who knows VA loans If you’re getting a VA loan, make sure you work with a Realtor who understands the process. I see a lot of people go with an agent who doesn’t understand the VA system. Remember, The VA won’t underwrite [just] any house. It is a huge, huge, huge deal to use an agent who understands the VA system, the VA appraisal process, and what that all really looks like When you’re buying through the VA, you’ll need to find a home that meets VA property requirements. A VA appraiser will have specific criteria; for instance, fixer-uppers (and even some newer homes) won’t qualify. Save yourself the headache of making an offer on a house that may not get approved, and work with a VA experienced Realtor from the start. Mistake # 2: Not communicating with your lender Veterans have access to arguably the most powerful mortgage option on the market, but about one in three home-buying veterans don’t know they have a home loan benefit. When you first meet with your lender, be sure to discuss your military status so you can be informed about all the potential advantages. One of the biggest benefits you’ll get with a VA loan is the ability to buy with 0% down (yes, I am totally serious). VA loans also come with low-interest rates, they don't require mortgage insurance, and have more forgiving credit requirements. Veterans should ask their lender if they offer any incentives for veterans, I’ve seen lenders waive appraisal fees, offer a waiver of the origination fee, and other lender credits. That's right—pretty much everything will get easier as soon as your lender knows your military status, so speak up! Mistake # 3: Forgetting about all the home-buying costs While you'll have a ton of financial advantages with your VA loan, you will have some costs to deal with. Probably the biggest mistake I see is active-duty members coming into the home-buying process and not knowing there are the other costs and fees necessary for buying a home. When you’re buying a home, you’ll likely have to plunk down a bit of cash for things like a home appraisal and inspection. It might not cost much in the large scheme of things, but it'll help speed things along if you come prepared knowing what you'll have to shell out for. Mistake # 4: Not thinking of your home as an investment Maybe you think there's no sense in buying if there's a chance you might be relocated in the next few years. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy; in fact, that home could end up being a smart investment. By searching in high-demand areas or choosing a popular home style and size, you’ll give yourself a better chance at resale if you need to move later. Or, you can hang on to it and rent it out. My clients and I often go out and look for their first rental home, not just a home for their family. With so many in transition, they’re able to purchase a home and it becomes an investment property for them when they go on to their next duty station or they move. Don’t like the idea of becoming a landlord? Did you know, A VA loan is assumable (meaning you can transfer the loan and the property to another vet), or you can just sell the home to a nonmilitary buyer. And don’t forget: You can use your VA home loan benefits again and again, so you can own a rental property and a new home. Mistake # 5: Making other big purchases before closing Once you’ve found a home and your offer is accepted, you’ll probably be excited to just move in already and make it yours. Maybe you have an eye on a new big-screen TV, and you're looking into financing a new living room set you love. But don’t do that yet. Opening a line of credit or making a big purchase after loan approval is a common mistake, This can oftentimes change the veteran's credit score and make them ineligible for the loan. Wait until after closing to make any other financial moves, just to be on the safe side and to keep your loan on track.
