Our approach to innovation is dead wrong | Diana Kander | TEDxKC

09:49
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In the past decade, we've seen an explosion in the number of business incubators, startup accelerators and entrepreneurial training programs. But Kander argues all of these programs share an enormous fatal flaw. Diana's talk challenges our thinking about entrepreneurship and presents a new approach for startups and corporations alike. Diana Kander entered America as an eight-year old refugee of the Soviet Union. By the time she was an American citizen, she had perfected her skills as a capitalist – selling flea market goods to grade school classmates at a markup. Today, Kander is a successful entrepreneur, having founded and sold a number of ventures, and is a senior fellow at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the largest nonprofit in the world dedicated to entrepreneurship and education. A sought-out public speaker and consultant, Kander has advised startup founders and Fortune 500 executives on her methodology for launching customer-focused products and services. She is the author of New York Times bestseller “All In Startup,” a business novel published by Wiley in 2014. The book is a "page turner" that helps entrepreneurs build products and services they know customers will buy. Website: http://www.dianakander.com Twitter: @dianakander About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Diffusion of Innovations

03:37
Understanding the adoption lifecycle of innovation can be characterised using Everett Rogers’ Diffusions of Innovation theory. The theory categorises innovation adopters into five segments: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority and laggards. Innovation must reach a certain critical mass point of adoption or it will likely fail. Gordon E. Moore referred to this point as the ‘Chasm’, which is often also known as the ‘S’ curve.

A New Approach To Innovation Management

03:00
Product innovation has been described as the way out of today's difficult business environment. However, the rate of success of development projects, in particular white space or disruptive innovation projects remains too low. We believe that a reason for the low success rate is the erroneous application of methods designed for incremental innovation like Stage Gate to projects with high levels of uncertainty. In this presentation we will discuss the different types of development projects based on degree of uncertainty, and the creation of different project tracks. Projects are managed using different tool sets based on the best fit between information available and decision making needs.

Smart Innovation Platform

01:01
In a world of smart, connected products, where entire markets can vanish with a single innovation, manufacturers must take a new approach to business. Some closely watch how products are being used, and feed data back from product utilization into product ideation and development in order to anticipate trends. But even if you know what to make, you still have to make it. That’s why manufacturing – the realization phase of innovation – is vital in this new era. Manufacturers must weave a digital thread through ideation, realization and utilization. It’s not enough to digitize. That just mimics processes digitally for incremental improvement. You have to digitalize. Digitalization makes the digital thread of knowledge a proactive agent in driving your business. With a fully optimized "Digital Enterprise", you are better equipped to initiate or respond to disruptive innovation. To help you activate digitalization, we’re building a “Smart Innovation Platform”. Watch this one-minute introduction to the Smart Innovation Platform. What is INNOVATION MANAGEMENT? What does INNOVATION MANAGEMENT mean?

06:35
What is INNOVATION MANAGEMENT? What does INNOVATION MANAGEMENT mean? INNOVATION MANAGEMENT meaning - INNOVATION MANAGEMENT definition - INNOVATION MANAGEMENT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Innovation management is the management of innovation processes. It refers both to product and organizational innovation. Innovation management includes a set of tools that allow managers and engineers to cooperate with a common understanding of processes and goals. Innovation management allows the organization to respond to external or internal opportunities, and use its creativity to introduce new ideas, processes or products. It is not relegated to R&D; it involves workers at every level in contributing creatively to a company's product development, manufacturing and marketing. By utilizing innovation management tools, management can trigger and deploy the creative capabilities of the work force for the continuous development of a company. Common tools include brainstorming, virtual prototyping, product lifecycle management, idea management, TRIZ, Phase–gate model, project management, product line planning and portfolio management. The process can be viewed as an evolutionary integration of organization, technology and market by iterating series of activities: search, select, implement and capture. Innovation processes can either be pushed or pulled through development. A pushed process is based on existing or newly invented technology, that the organization has access to, and tries to find profitable applications for. A pulled process is based on finding areas where customers needs are not met, and then find solutions to those needs. To succeed with either method, an understanding of both the market and the technical problems are needed. By creating multi-functional development teams, containing both engineers and marketers, both dimensions can be solved. Innovation management is based on some of the ideas put forth by the Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter, working during the 1930s, who identified innovation as a significant factor in economic growth. His book “Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy” first fully developed the concept of creative destruction. Innovation management helps an organization grasp an opportunity and use it to create and introduce new ideas, processes, or products industriously. Creativity is the basis of innovation management; the end goal is a change in services or business process. Innovative ideas are the result of two consecutive steps, imitation and invention. The process can be viewed as an evolutionary integration of organization, technology, and market, by iterating series of activities: search, select, implement and capture.

Innovation and Ideation for Concept Development

39:32
This video discusses an approach to concept development that utilizes innovation and ideation. Though often sought after, standard consumer research often lacks in the ability to generate truly new product/service ideas or innovations for companies…often providing “evolutionary” but not “revolutionary” ideas. The Innovation and Ideation framework for concept development utilizes a combination of participants and methodologies. These include general consumer research to understand the important and needed areas in the category, online communities (such as our Imaginators® community) to generate truly innovative ideas and concepts, and internal work sessions to narrow the focus to those best “fitting” with organization goals and structures. In addition, in this video we present a process for “outside of the box” concept development and include an example creativity exercise.
