A problem with visually designed content is that people too often create visuals for the camera and not for humans. It may surprise you to know that people do not process images like a camera. Your brain has a 2% field of vision vs. the 180% field of view of the camera. The camera's large field of view means that it’s able to get all the information in front of it in one go. Visual design principles tell us the human eye processes visual content by rapid eye movements called Saccades. Saccades are when the eye is quickly moving around an environment grabbing small pieces of information to build the bigger picture. Your brain thinks it sees a complete image, but in reality, it’s absorbing small pieces of it. So the question is HOW does visual design for the human eye? Or more importantly; how do we create content that will encourage people to take the action we want? That’s exactly what I’m going to go through in this video: You’ll learn: 1. How to establish your focal point for the reader 2. How to differentiate between areas of importance 3. You’ll also learn how patterns are your friend 4. The effect of simplifying your focus 5. Application developers must support unprecedented rates of change – functionality must rapidly evolve to meet customer needs and respond to competitive pressures. To address these realities, developers are increasingly selecting NoSQL document-oriented databases (e.g. Azure DocumentDB, MongoDB, CouchDB) for schema-free, scalable and high performance data storage. One of the oft-cited benefits of NoSQL solutions are that they allow for the storage of schema less data. In reality, however, NoSQL solutions provide for schema flexibility, allowing the system to store data as it comes in, permitting dissimilar structures and encouraging seamless data model iteration. While schema flexibility makes it easy to embrace changes to your data model, data modeling is still important in NoSQL systems. Space and Planning Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen gets right down to the fundamentals of design in this fascinating back-to-basics series. He tackles real problems in real homes as he explores six themes: space, colour, light, texture and pattern, balance and order, and personality. In addition to his own in-depth knowledge of design principles, Laurence calls on a colour forecaster, psychologists and a perception specialist to explain and demonstrate the science behind the how and the why. Taking a real home where a design problem is all too apparent, he demonstrates some simple psychology and basic experiments in a 'design lab' back at the studio -- and it's all done without knocking down walls or spending big bucks. Space comes under the spotlight in the first programme. Lack of space is a common problem in British homes which, surprisingly, have 20 square metres less space than Japanese homes, with an average of only 120 square metres. "The cardinal sin that the British indulge in beyond any other nation is the concept of agoraphobic furniture that feels it needs to keep its back against the wall at all times in case something unpleasant happens to it!" quips Laurence. By painting the walls a paler colour, bringing the outside inside by strategically placing an eye-catching object outside the window and switching to light-reflecting flooring, the brain is deluded into thinking that the room is bigger. Suddenly, the crowded living room is calmer and seems larger -- thanks to a little bit of science and the tricks of design rules. Eye brain specialist Dr Ione Fine comments: "Half of interior design is illusion."And on a practical note, Laurence shows why it's better to buy a couple of two-seater sofas -- because three people never sit on a three-seater! So you have a fantastic idea for a game, and the know how to make it, but do you have a great game design document? Do you even know what one is? Well don’t worry, I’ve got ya baby. As a smaller developer, you will probably only have the the basic Game Design Document. So now that you know what you need, how do you create a great design document? Well, there are a few things to keep in mind. Be clear and concise with what you put in the document. Anyone should be able to read what you write and understand what your vision is. There should never be a situation where a member of your development team doesn’t know what it is that you want. It should all be plainly laid out in the document. If you find that people don’t understand your idea, either rewrite that section of the doc, or it might be time to rethink your idea. It is important to keep in mind that this is a living document. During development, things will change. You may find that your initial ideas just don’t work out when put onto the screen, and that is OK. Just because you wrote something in the document, doesn’t mean that it absolutely has to be that way. So if you need to make a change from your original vision, do it. In this talk I will cover Service ValueNetworks that have emerged in various Industries (e.g. Manufacturing, Pharma, HealthCare and others) in various forms and shapes over the last decade. The Service ecosystems supporting such value networks are complex and ad-hoc and have varying risk criteria, interconnectivity and risk measurements when compared to more traditional supply-chains and value-chains. Value networks as a research area represent a novel approach to modeling complex enterprise relationships from the perspective of value creation and sharing. This talk addresses three major challenges of value network-driven enterprise analysis: (1) unifying the business knowledge of multiple enterprises and their diverse and conflicting objectives in the value network, (2) sensing the value network and processes through systems design, and 3) analyzing the value offered by multiple service entities in the network based on common goals and metrics. Biography: Dr. J. Sairamesh (Ramesh) is currently a Managing Partner at 360Fresh Inc. Previously he was a Manager and Program Leader for Business Solutions and Manufacturing Quality Research at IBM Watson Research, New York. He was one of the functional architects for IBM's e-business and e-Marketplace products. At IBM, from 2001 to 2007, he helped drive the vision and strategy for business solutions on value-chain management, warranty and enterprise quality in manufacturing (automotive) for IBM. He led a team on early warning solutions, services middleware and end-to-end quality technologies. He has helped incubate and drive three commercial business solutions for IBM's customers in the areas of Dealer-CRM, Early Warning for Warranty and Supply-Chain Quality. He has numerous US Patents and over 50 research publications. He has won three outstanding innovation awards and a research division award for his eCommerce and Business Solutions work at IBM. He received his M.S., M. Phil.(1992), and Ph.D (1996) from EE and CS at Columbia University.

It allows you to strongly influence the standards and recommended practices that will be adopted around the world. It is a fantastic experience. One of the challenges that comes with moving to MongoDB is figuring how to best model your data. While most developers have internalized the rules of thumb for designing schemas for RDBMSs, these rules don't always apply to MongoDB. The simple fact that documents can represent rich, schema-free data structures means that we have a lot of viable alternatives to the standard, normalized, relational model. Not only that, MongoDB has several unique features, such as atomic updates and indexed array keys, that greatly influence the kinds of schemas that make sense. Understandably, this begets good questions: -Are foreign keys permissible, or is it better to represent one-to-many relations within a single document? -Are join tables necessary, or is there another technique for building out many-to-many relationships? -What level of denormalization is appropriate? -How do my data modeling decisions affect the efficiency of updates and queries? In this webcast, we'll answer these questions and more, provide a number of data modeling rules of thumb, and discuss the tradeoffs of various data modeling strategies.
