Recent news about the legal battle which Oracle and Google have been involved with in the courts has made many Java developers wonder what this actually means to them. Should they be careful about what and how they code in the future to avoid legal repercussions? What do they need to understand or know going forward? Is this just a problem for Java or development in general? Following on from the recent vJug discussion, this session session is led by some of the key stalwarts in our industry, who will aim to provide opinions of what the news means to them. We also have a patent attorney present, but it should be noted that you should seek professional legal advice if you rely on it. John Furrier speaking with James Greene, Sr. Security Engineer for Intel at Intel Developer Forum, 2012. When it comes to security architecture, many developments in the stack seem to be an afterthought, particularly in the application layer. Instead of a full replacement approach, Jim Greene is a senior security engineer for Intel proposes an incremental method to updating enterprise infrastructure. In fact, Greene has a very clear take on the state of cyber-security today – he shares his perspective with SiliconANGLE founder John Furrier at the Intel Developer Forum last month. Greene says that the industry is in a very pragmatic place today: now that the enterprises no longer have a false sense of security and are past the doom and gloom stage, vendors like Intel are tackling the topic of how to make the cloud more secure while accommodating modern workloads. He elaborated, adding that there are three things to take into consideration in cyber-security today: the hackers, the IT landscape, and the regulatory part. As a chipmaker Intel’s approach is to make the underlying hardware that powers consumer devices and data center products more efficient, reliable, and harder to crack. The firm is also collaborating with partners such as McAfee to offer security software and services that run on top of its processors. According to Greene it’s impossible for enterprises to start implementing more modernized security measures. Implementing new technologies is an incremental process, much like the step-by-step transition to the cloud that these organizations take. The theme right now is rationalizing this process. This is on one end. Over at the application layer, Greene says that it’s best to develop applications with security in mind from the get-go, rather than bolting on data protection features as an afterthought. He notes that this concept of ‘security DNA’ is also what defines the next generation cloud service providers: vendors that focus on keeping the data that customers store on their servers safe. The emphasis on data is something Greene stressed. The security perimeter is changing –the cloud is nullifying traditional technological boundaries, and the perimeter is now around the data itself rather than the business infrastructure

John Furrier speaking with Omer Trajman, Customer Solutions for Cloudera at Intel Developer Forum, 2012. At IDF 2012 John Furrier interviews Cloudera's Omer Trajman in the developer zone. The two shed some light on the evolution of storage and computing, Cloudera, Hadoop, datacenters, and Intel's role in carrying our data forward. Furrier opens the interview by touching on fourth generation processors, its effect on opens source and how that impacts Cloudera. Trajman responds, elaborating on the connection between the demand from improved processors and Cloudera's role in Intel. As more types and varieties of data are created, greater pressure is placed on the classic data center model. This causes the desire for industry standard hardware and industry standard components. Although there will continue to be variations such as spinning disk or flash which will take over as the next generation, we're now seeing more types of storage heavy or compute heavy applications. Intel is moving from a component player to a more of a data center player. Furrier asks Omer where and if he sees an architectural change that impacts flash and solid state given Intel's change of focus. Flash and solid states are still moving forward, states Trajman. Disk is still in there to some extent, but the move is away from separating storage and computing and towards using standardized components to bring them together. By putting the intelligent software with the servers you'll need a lot less separate storage. Furrier then mentions the first Hadoop World where Abhi Mehta coined the term data factories. He then asks how that has evolved today and how do you see people organizing their data? "Instead of data flowing freely throughout the enterprise... its getting centralized on joint storage and compute architectures," Trajman responds. We're seeing data being put in the same place that you compute, and that becomes your data hub, data factory, or data reservoir where you have pristine data. The interview switched gears and the two began to discuss the difference between Hadoop and Mongo in data analytics. Mongo is very useful; it's a very important specialized engine. It solves a lot of interesting problems, primarily in the document and application serving space. Mongo typically gets seen on the front end serving an application. "Hadoop 's philosophy is that there isn't any single engine that will solve all problems." When u generate a lot of data, you need to compute the data and get it back into your application, that part would happen on a Hadoop system. Furrier then asks for an update on Cloudera and their growth since their inception, as well as their work on Apache in the open source arena. Trajman was happy to elaborate stating, "We are growing fast we're close to around 300 employees, which for a four year company is pretty wild growth." A lot of the investment has been on the open source side. Over one third of the company is just focused on building great open source software that people can use. We spend a lot of our time contributing to the Apache open source community. CDH 4 now has Apache high availability. Lastly, Trajman talks about what separates Cloudera from its peer corporations such as MapR, EMC, Greegplum and Hortonworks. In addition, Furrier asks Trajman to tell us how relevant is HBase, part of the Holy trinity of Hadoop, despite the criticism regarding its scalability or versatility. Its very critical, replied Trajman. Hbase is modeled on what Google created when they created Big Table. Today Big Table powers a lot of their applications and infrastructure. We're seeing HBase power equivalent things outside of Google, for example, the messages on Facebook. Hbase touches and impacts a lot more people in different ways than they realize. It is great for real-time "atomic" access to data. While it differs from classic relation based systems, HBase is a lot more focused on discreet access.

John Furrier speaking with John Hengeveld, Directory of Marketing, HPC for Intel at Intel Developer Forum, 2012. From the Moscone Center in California, SiliconANGLE's John Furrier stopped to chat with Director of Marketing for Intel, John Hengeveld, about improving computation to improve the world. Intel's Director of Marketing was eager to talk about some of their new technology, and its potential impacts. The two discuss High Performance Computing, or HPC, Ultrabooks, cloud computing, Big Data and how Intel aspires to make the world a better place through better, faster, more efficient computing. Furrier first discussed Intel's mission statement and asked Hengeveld to expand upon the ways in which Intel's technology was being used to "enrich the lives of a global work force." Hengeveld went on to mention how Intel's technology is creating advancements in energy, medicine, and enterprise. Hengeveld states, "We're in a green world today... In order to be blue, that's Intel, you have to be green." Using High Performance Computing, Hengeveld and his team aim deliver more performance and more performance per watts. Intel is trying to lower the power required to come to these amazing solutions in computation. Their customers are taking their technology and using it to better predict hurricanes, to develop better cancer treatments, and even provide better models of how our universe was created. To Hengeveld it is easy to see how HPC can enrich the world. John Furrier went on to ask about how HPC is impacting the world of cancer research and cancer treatments. To this, Hengeveld talks about the Cancer Genome Atlas; this project gathers sets of Genomic data on patients and their tumors. The Cancer Genome Atlas is being studied to try and indentify and counteract the mutations in classes of cancers. The aim is to produce targeted therapies to address specific mutations and avoid affecting the non cancer cells. This is also very personal to Hengeveld who is a cancer patient himself. "This software is the hope for people like me and for therapies that might target their disorders," Hengeveld says. This feat would not have been practical in previous years due to computation costs. Now it is possible to consider taking a significant number of cancer cells and making the data for these cancer studies available for a Big Data class analysis. The conversation shifted to alternative energy and the advancements that high performance computing could provide. HPC aids in maximizing our efficiency, how much energy we consume versus how much energy we waste. By using HPC programs a company could optimize a propeller for a wind farm or create the ideal solar panel design. Furrier asks about the reality of business and use, and where does Hengeveld see the demand for HPC moving in the future. The notion of getting more performance out of the hardware has always been a main focus of Intel, in keeping with Moore's Law. "Now with larger companies taking advantage of this, what are some of the uses for high performance computing that you see?" Intel's Director of Marketing gladly shared his thoughts for the future of HPC. As Moore's Law takes the top performance and biggest systems in the world up, it also takes the available performance to enterprises up significantly as well. Companies use more data to understand customers. From an enterprise perspective there is top line benefit and bottom line benefit to having increase computing capability. The same technology can be used in modeling and simulation of products or to help locate new locations for drilling oil, even helping your local traffic flow more smoothly. Given the surge of entrepreneurship and invention among scientists Ferrier asked Hengeveld, how big and disruptive is this new Big Data trend? Hengeveld explains that Big Data is making a tremendous impact on businesses today. He believes the potential to make more impact is not just possible, but more significant. Hengeveld doesn't believe there is a limit to how much impact big data will have. The volume of data we are producing each year is massively scaling beyond Moore's Law and with it the ability to use that data is also scaling faster. The conclusions we will reach from this data will be more impactful and more valuable going forward. Hengeveld firmly believes Big Data and HPC is a tremendous economic and social force.

Presentation by Viji Subramanian (Infosys) during the OTM User Conference in Singapore on 16 November 2018. When the height of the equipment is not the multiples of heights of pallets, we need to split the pallets so that we utilize the space of the equipment efficiently. This can be configured using Loading split functionality in OTM (which is available from 6.3.2 version). OTM will try to pack the equipment with full pallets first. When there is no room left, OTM will consider loading split options for the remaining space in the equipment. Viji Subramanian has 12 years of experience in Oracle Transportation Management, both technical and functional expertise in implementing in OTM and worked extensively across various industry customers like Third Party Logistics providers, Aerospace & defense and Food and Beverages.
