http://www.engvid.com/ I exited the building = very strange English! I shall teach you = very old-fashioned English! I joined the BBQ = WHAT??? Exit, shall, and join are all old words, and are considered too formal nowadays! Learn how to use more natural words and expressions! Don't forget to take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/old-school-vocabulary/ TRANSCRIPT Hello, and welcome to my lesson. I hope you are happy. What? What's going on? Today, I'm going to teach you some words that you will say in English. They are definitely English words. You will use the words correctly in a beautiful, grammatically correct sentence, but they make me go, "What? That's weird. That's weird. "You speak like a grandmother or a grandfather." This lesson is called "Olde School" or -- uh-oh! "Too formal! What are you doing?" So one of the goals that I've always had since I started teaching ESL, or teaching English, is that textbook English and the way that a lot of people teach you how to speak... it's not "cool". You sound like you are reading a textbook. One of my goals in life is to make everyone that I teach sound natural, normal, and not like an old person even if you are an old person. That's cool. I want you to learn words that I and other normal -- normal? Not normal -- and natural English speakers would use. So "Olde School". "Ronnie, you've spelled "old school" wrong." Guess what? A long time ago, this is how they spelled "old", but they didn't say "oldie", they said "old". "Olde school" "Olde school" means it's old. So let's look at the first one: "Telephone". We never, ever, ever, ever, ever say "telephone"; we say "phone" or "mobile" or "cell". "Telephone" is really, really, really old. Do you remember the really old telephones that you had to dial -- you stick your finger and you go [makes clicking sounds]? And if you made a mistake, you had to start again. I remember being a little Ronnie, and I had to dial my best friend's number, and it had three nines in it. [Shudders] "I made a mistake." So "telephone" -- old. Now we have these wonderful cell phones. You press a button, and your friend is right there -- "Hi", okay? Don't use the word "telephone"; it's strange. The other one is: "Television". Do you have a television? I don't. I hate television. So much so that I don't even call it that; I call it a TV. Please call it a "TV", not a "television". "Television" is old, very old. This word: "refrigerator" -- "Ronnie, there's a space here." Yeah. Ronnie has trouble spelling. And the reason why I have trouble spelling this word is we never, ever, ever say this word: "refrigerator". I'm tired by the time I get to this space here, so instead of saying "refrigerator", do you know what we say? "I'm hungry. I'm going to go to the fridge." and get a Coke or a drink. So normally, we shorten this, and we call it a "fridge", "fridge". "Automobile", "auto". If you speak any of the Latin languages, you can understand "auto" means "self"; "mobile" means "move". "Look at me. I'm going in my self-move to the -- to the mall. Would you like a drive?" "No. I'll take the bus, thank you." So "automobile" and "auto", we do not use. We call it one of these [makes car noise] a "car". I have seen a textbook -- one or two in my day -- and it actually says "automobile". So I looked at the date: "Published 2010." Really? You put "automobile" in a textbook? Give your head a shake. The next one is a modal verb. If you do not know what a modal verb is, go look in a grammar book. "Shall" is a modal verb. However, we never use this. The only time you will see this modal verb used is if you are reading rules of something. If you go to a public swimming pool, or if you go on the subway, all of the rules are written with this word. "You shall not spit in the pool. You shall not -- in the pool." Okay, I'm not going to do that. "You shall not run around the pool because you're going to die." "Shall" -- we always use "will" or negative "won't". This has... replaced our modal verb "shall". Please don't say this; it's weird. "You shall give me a dollar." What? "You will give me a dollar." "You're going to give me a dollar." Everyone give me a dollar. The next one is an expression: "What a pity" or "What a shame!" Now, if you were -- let's see -- maybe a 70-year-old grandmother or grandfather living in England, you would say this all the time. My grandmother -- God rest her soul -- would say this, "What a pity. What a shame." She's from Scotland. She says this all the time, "What a pity. What a shame." We go, "That sucks." Okay? If something is bad, you can -- you can say that. You can say, "Wow. That sucks." or "That blows." Don't say this. You can even say, "That's bad." "What a pity" or "What a shame" -- it's way, way too old. Too old. Too old. Bye-bye. "Pardon me!" Pardon me; I forgot the "S". "Pardon me" -- again, my grandmother says this all the time. Pardon me -- we say now: "Excuse me."

1976 (Shirley Bassey hosts Charles Aznavour on her 1976 TV Variety Show. Shirley first performs Aznavour's, 'Dance In The Old Fashion Way' and Charles comes in half way through and dances with Shirley. Then, Charles sings another one of the songs he wrote, 'Yesterday When I Was Young.' The song, 'Yesterday When I Was Young' was a big hit for both Charles and Shirley, and Bassey has performed it live more times than probably any other artist but maybe Aznavous himself. This song, 'The Old Fashioned Way' was recorded and released on Shirley's 1973 LP titled, 'Shirley Bassey - Never Never Never' ABOUT this song: "The Old Fashioned Way" is the English version of Charles Aznavour's "Les plaisirs demodes" song. The song was released in English in 1973 and became a hit in the UK. YRICS: Dance in the old-fashioned way. Won't you stay in my arms ? Just melt against my skin and let me feel your heart. Don't let the music win by dancing far apart. Come close where you belong, let's hear our secret song. Dance in the old-fashioned way. Won't you stay in my arms and we'll discover heights we never knew before, if we just close our eyes and dance around the floor. That gay, old-fashioned way that makes me love you more. Come closer, forget about the others. It's nice to be like this, cheek to cheek, in the old-fashioned way. It's funny, but, I have the feeling that we are dancing as our parents used to do. Well, maybe they weren't wrong : the world changes, love stays. Dance in the old-fashioned way. Won't you stay in my arms and we'll discover heights we never knew before, if we just close our eyes and dance around the floor. That gay, old-fashioned way that makes me love you more. ABOUT Yesterday When I Was Young: This song was recorded and released on Shirley's 1970 LP titled, 'Shirley Bassey - Something'. Bassey's UK comeback came in 1970, leading to one of the most successful periods of her career. In this year, she returned to the UK with a record breaking run of performances at the Talk of the Town nightclub. Also in that year, she released the album Something, which showcased a new Bassey style, a shift from traditional pop to more contemporary songs and arrangements ABOUT the original songwriter, Charles Aznavour: Charles Aznavour OC, (born Shahnour Vaghenag Aznavourian, May 22, 1924, Paris) is a French-Armenian singer, songwriter, actor, public activist and diplomat. Besides being one of France's most popular and enduring singers, he is also one of the best-known singers in the world. Aznavour is known for his characteristic short figure and unique tenor voice; clear and ringing in its upper reaches, with gravelly and profound low notes. He has appeared in more than 60 movies, composed about 1,000 songs (including 150 at least in English, 100 in Italian, 70 in Spanish, and 50 in German, and has sold well over 100 million records. In 1998, Charles Aznavour was named Entertainer of the Century by CNN and users of Time Online from around the globe. LYRICS - Yesterday When I Was Young: Yesterday when I was young The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue I teased at life as if it were a foolish game The way the evening breeze may tease the candle flame A thousand dreams I dreamed The splendid things I planned I always built alas on weak and shifting sand I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day And only now I see how the years ran away Yesterday when I was young So many lovely songs were waiting to be sung So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see [ Find more Lyrics on http://mp3lyrics.org/bIv ] I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out I never stopped to think what life was all about And every conversation I can now recall Concerned itself with me and nothing else at all Yesterday the moon was blue And every crazy day brought something new to do I used my magic age as if it were a wand That never saw the waste and emptiness beyond The game of love I played with arrogance and pride And every flame I lit too quickly quickly died The friends I made all seemed somehow drift away And only I am left on stage to end the play There are so many songs in me that won't be sung I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue The time has come for me to pay For yesterday.... when I was young.....

In this episode of How to Drink, I take a look at one of the most well known cocktails in the world: the Old Fashioned. I not only show you how to make an Old Fashioned, but give you the background of this timeless drink and how to enjoy it. As I mention in the show, there are an awful lot of ways to make an Old Fashioned from muddled fruit to sugar cubes to departing from whiskey entirely and working with other spirits. At any rate, this is how I make them. If you've got a favorite recipe (or if you just want to hurl expletives at me for butchering your favorite drink) feel free to leave a comment, I'd love to hear from you! If you like the show and want to see more, please subscribe, a new episode comes out every Friday. The cute Olde English Bulldogge is an American dog breed, and the ultimate Bulldog companion and family pet. In the 1970s David Leavitt developed, a true-breeding lineage as a reimagining of the healthier working bulldog from nineteenth century England. Using a breeding plan developed for cattle, Leavitt crossed English bulldogs with American Bulldogs, American Pit Bull Terriers and Bull Mastiffs. The result was an athletic breed that looks similar to the bulldogs of 1820 but also has a friendly temperament and was much healthier than the modern English Bulldog. Ary of One Of A Kind Bulldogs, shares his beautiful Oldies with us and relays tons of information on the breed.

The old roses from times past have a special, soft and sweet beauty and usually a wonderful, strong and sweet perfume. Their delicate colours change a little depending on the weather and temperature. Many are summer flowering but there are some that are repeat flowering during the autumn. This video is meant to be a little tribute to the roses that I love. There are also some images of beautiful and romantic interiors that were decorated with roses as a theme. The music is Schubert Serenade and Haydn String Quartet Op.1, No.3 Antique, old, heritage, historic, vintage, ancient, heirloom or cabbage roses..much loved roses have many names. Here is a presentation of some of the sorts. Rosa Gallica: It is one of the earliest cultivated species of roses, cultivated by the Greek and Romans and used in mediaeval gardens. In the 19th century it was the most important species of rose to be cultivated. Examples: Rosa Mundi, Tuscany Superb, Cardinal de Richelieu, Hippolyte, Belle de Crecy, Duchesse de Montebello, Complicata, Comtesse de Lacepede, Empress Josephine Damask rose, Rosa Damascena: The flowers are renowned for their fine fragrance, and are harvested for rose oil used in perfumery and to make rose water. The flower petals are used to flavor food and to make tea. The Crusader Robert de Brie is said to have brought the Damask rose from Syria to Europe between 1254 and 1276. Other stories say the Romans brought the rose to England, or that the physician of Henry VIII gave him a Damask rose as a present, around 1540. Examples: Ispahan, Mme Hardy, La Ville de Bruxelles, Celsiana, Mme Zoetmans, Leda, Duchesse de Rohan Rosa Alba: (white rose) is the name of a family of roses that grow in bushes or shrubs and whose blossoms share a pale colouring. The leaves are dark bluish-green. Named in 1753 by Carl von Linné in his Species Plantarum. The Alba roses are among the oldest roses to be found in Europe. They originated from Europe and still prefer a temperate climate. Examples: Maxima, Maiden's Blush, Königin von Dänemark, Celeste, Belle Amour, Mme Legras de St. Germain, Pompon Blanc Parfait, Felicite Parmentier Bourbon rose: Bourbon roses originated on the Île Bourbon (Réunion) off the coast of Madagascar. They flower repeatedly and have glossy foliage. They were first Introduced in France in 1823. Examples: Louise Odier, Mme Pierre Oger, Zephirine Drouhin, La Reine Victoria, Souvenir de la Malmaison, Souvenir de Mme Auguste Charles, Honorine de Brabant, Bourbon Queen, Mme Ernest Calvat Portland roses: Recent DNA analysis shows that the original Portland Rose has no Chinese ancestry, but has an autumn damask/gallica lineage. Portland roses were named after the Duchess of Portland who received a repeat flowerig rose, Four Season, Quattre Saisons. These roses are repeat flowering. Examples: Comte de Chambord, Rose de Rescht, Jacques Quartier, Mme Knorr, Mme Boll, Yolande d'Aragon, the Portland Rose Rosa Centifolia, Cabbage rose, Hundred Petaled Rose: Developed by Dutch rose breeders between the 17th and 19th century, possibly earlier. Find out more here: http://ow.ly/RbtZB CUCUMBER ICE CREAM RECIPE INGREDIENTS 1 large cucumber 120g sugar Half a pint of water Some ginger brandy A little green food colouring 2 lemons 1 pint sweetened cream METHOD Peel and de-seed the cucumber, then chop it and cook it until tender in the water and sugar. Whilst the cucumber is still warm, pound it to soften it a little, then add the green food colouring. You can then add the brandy and lemon juice. The brandy is optional. Sieve the mixture to remove any lumps, then add the sweetened cream. Place some ice into a large bowl, then cover the ice in salt. You can then place a smaller bowl on top, and add the cucumber mix inside. Keep stirring the mixture, turning the bowl at the same time. Keep this going until your ice cream mixture has thickened. You can then add your thick mixture to some moulds, or an ice cream tub and place it in the freezer. After a few hours your ice cream will be ready. A twist on the classic old fashioned. This delicious Gin Old Fashioned features the incredible Tru Gin from GreenBar Distillary. The first documented definition of the word "cocktail" was in response to a reader's letter asking to define the word in the May 6, 1806, issue of The Balance and Columbian Repository in Hudson, New York. In the May 13, 1806, issue, the paper's editor wrote that it was a potent concoction of spirits, bitters, water, and sugar; it was also referred to at the time as a bittered sling. J.E. Alexander describes the cocktail similarly in 1833, as he encountered it in New York City, as being rum, gin, or brandy, significant water, bitters, and sugar, though he includes a nutmeg garnish as well. By the 1860s, it was common for orange curaçao, absinthe, and other liqueurs to be added to the cocktail. The original concoction, albeit in different proportions, came back into vogue, and was referred to as "old-fashioned". The most popular of the in-vogue "old-fashioned" cocktails were made with whiskey, according to a Chicago barman, quoted in The Chicago Daily Tribune in 1882, with rye being more popular than Bourbon. The recipe he describes is a similar combination of spirits, bitters, water and sugar of seventy-six years earlier. Traditionally, the first use of the name "Old Fashioned" for a Bourbon whiskey cocktail was said to have been, anachronistically, at the Pendennis Club, a gentlemen's club founded in 1881 in Louisville, Kentucky. The recipe was said to have been invented by a bartender at that club in honor of Colonel James E. Pepper, a prominent bourbon distiller, who brought it to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel bar in New York City.

Mittwork Certification Course►http://bit.ly/1FIOiju The "fighting Irish" stance was and old school boxing stance used amongst bare-knuckle boxers, before the invention of boxing gloves. It was designed to protect the head and hands, the two vital parts of the competing fighters. Whether you've seen it used in movies like Snatch or Gangs of New York, or just recognize it from the Notre Dame football mascot, it's a symbol of combat sports history, and the evolution of martial arts. So is it effective in MMA with fighters like Conor McGregor, or is it just a way to pay homage? Comment! This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report , from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish This summer, the remains of what had been Hurricane Isaac moved over the American Midwest. The storm brought rain to areas suffering from a severe drought. But the rain came too late to save many farmers' corn and soybean crops. Crop insurance will help limit financial losses. But crop insurance is a tool that is not available to most growers in the developing world. The United States federal government helps pay for the cost of insurance against natural disasters. Not every farmer in America chooses to buy crop insurance. Dick Thompson of Boone, Iowa, says he operates his farm the way farmers did in the past. "I'm old-fashioned, and I'm proud of it," he says. Dick Thompson uses little chemical fertilizer, weed killers or insecticides. He does not grow genetically modified crops. He says his methods helped him survive the drought. And, he says, they are already earning him more money per hectare than his neighbors who farm the modern way.Scientists are trying to understand why his methods are working. Matt Liebman has copied many of them in his research fields at Iowa State University. He says he is trying to understand some of the scientific mechanisms that explain the results Dick Thompson observes on his own farm. Many Iowa farms today grow only corn and soybeans. Payments from crop insurance keep farmers in business when their crops do poorly, as in this year's drought. But Dick Thompson says he has never bought crop insurance. Instead, he protects himself by growing other kinds of crops in addition to corn and soybeans. He raises hay and oats, along with cattle and pigs. He harvested his oat crop before the drought hit. He says, "It's common sense." But now farmers are growing hay on only half as much land as they did 20 years ago. And oat production has fallen by almost 95 percent.Livestock production has also fallen. Dick Thompson says he will sell some of his cows and hogs, but not all of them. They provide more than money. They also make manure that he uses to fertilize the soil, instead of chemical fertilizers. The manure helps the soil hold water. Iowa State University researcher Rick Cruse says that helps crop growth even in drought conditions. And these are the stressful conditions that farmers everywhere might face more often because of climate change. Matt Liebman says his research shows that all farmers can learn from Dick Thompson. For VOA Learning English, I'm Laurel Bowman. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 04Sep2012)
