Art Happens: Help the Museum of London redress their Pleasure Gardens
The Museum of London needs your help to conserve London's fashion history. One of the main attractions in the Museum's permanent galleries is the Pleasure Gardens, an immersive space inspired by the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens in its heyday. The gallery includes twelve mannequins dressed in spectacular clothing and accessories from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Due to the age and fragility of these rare items of clothing, they need to raise £10,000 to rotate and replace them with other objects from their Dress, Textiles and Decorative Arts Collections. Your support will help them make these new selections, some of which have never been exhibited before, fit for display. Find out more https://www.artfund.org/redressing-pleasure

By design: Gender-neutral clothes and eco-friendly creations
(11 Sep 2018) LEADIN: Environmentally-friendly creations and gender-neutral clothing are starring at an annual competition at London's Design Museum. Curators say designers are tackling challenges faced by the world, whether it's mounting plastic pollution or climate change. STORYLINE: It might look like top couture, but this recycled dress by UK-based designer Matty Bovan was woven from tweed suits once owned by his late grandmother. It's greeting visitors to the eleventh Beazley Designs of the Year exhibit, held at London's Design Museum. This stone table was created by London-based designer Paul Cocksedge. In response to the threat of eviction from his east London studio, he drilled tonnes of material from its floor and began creating. Creations by almost 90 nominees are on display as part of the annual design competition. Concern over the environment is a major theme. Curator Aric Chen says many are tackling challenges faced by our planet, from mounting plastic pollution to climate change. "I think, design has always been a very responsive discipline. I mean, it really is about really articulating, navigating and making sense of the world that we inhabit," he says. "So, in that sense, I think it's only natural that designers are looking at some of the challenges and questions that we're confronted with." One example is this environmentally-friendly water bottle, made by Will and Jaden Smith's drinks brand JUST Water. It's completely biodegradable, including the cap. "They created a brand called JUST Water and it uses biodegradable paper containers with caps that are not plastic but derive from sugarcane and are compostable," explains Chen. Campaign group A Plastic Planet is showcasing what's claimed to be a plastic-free supermarket aisle. It features an array of recyclable glass, metal, cardboard and biodegradable containers. "I think it is scalable, but it starts from we have to work on different levels and has to come from the consumer," says A Plastic Planet co-founder Frederikke Magnussen. "Right now, we can't shop plastic-free, we can have gluten-free, fat-free, sugar-free, wheat-free, but we don't have a plastic-free option. "So, we want to be able to give people that option in their daily shop. So, if you don't want to have plastic in your life, you don't have to." While the #MeToo movement has focused on gender inequality and female empowerment, designers have also begun to explore the malleability of genders. The exhibit features gender-bending male clothing by fashion house Palomo Spain. There's also a line of gender-neutral clothing by New York-based fashion designer Telfar Clemens. "He's been working sort of under the radar for quite a while," says Chen. "And it's only recently that he's been sort of acknowledged for his line that's sort of gender-neutral or gender ambiguous, under the rubric of; 'It's not for you, it's for everyone.' And I think that is the ethos he follows." Pevious editions of the annual design competition have been dominated by high-tech creations, from driverless cars, to smartphone apps and gadgets. This year's selection is much less tech driven. Designers, Chen says, are working in the here and now. "A lot of the things that we're so obsessed with - driverless cars, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things etc. etc. - these were all imagined 50, 100 years ago," he says. "So, in many ways, what we're doing now is we are working towards realising the future as the past imagined it. Enter the weird and wonderful worlds of four CSM grads turned fashion’s brightest young things. Step inside Istanbul-born, London-based rebel Dilara Findikoglu’s cabinet of curiosities, rub a wishing stone with Rottingdean Bazaar’s James Theseus Buck and Luke Brooks, and peer into designer, illustrator and make-up maestro Matty Bovan’s kaleidoscopic diary of everyday outfits. Shaking up the capital’s fashion scene from afar, each designer is a non-compromising, multi-tasking collaborator of the creative resistance. Showcase: Cristobal Balenciaga in London
One of the reasons the Victoria and Albert Museum is a must-see is its focus on fashion. It just opened what’s promising to be another blockbuster - an exhibit on the Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga. It primarily focuses on the designer's most creative years in Paris in the ’50s and ’60s. But it also examines his Basque roots and his influence on today’s designers. "China" Ronaldo Fraga - Design Museum London
Brit Insurance Designs of the Year - Design Museum, London Design: Ronaldo Fraga Accessories Design: Marcelle Lawson-Smith Ronaldo Fraga Autumn/Winter 07, Sao Paulo, Brazil Entitled "China", fashion designer Ronaldo Fraga's presentation of his Autumn/Winter 2007 collection at Sao Paulo Fashion Week was an evocative and provocative fusion of catwalk, theatre and social statement. Addressing the subject of China and its' rapidly growing global influence, Fraga captured an emotionally charged environment where the traditional and the superfluous co-exist, of ancient culture and waste pollution, of timeless ritual and unlicensed mass production. Accessories in printed stainless steel and porcelain were created by London-based designer Marcelle Lawson-Smith, a regular Fraga collaborator.

Secrets of Balenciaga's design revealed
(24 May 2017) LEADIN: The first UK exhibition exploring the work of Spanish fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga opens in London on May 27. The exhibition at London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) primarily focuses the designer's most creative years in Paris in the 1950s and 1960s - but also examines his Basque roots and his legacy on contemporary designers. STORYLINE: A major exhibition at the UK's top fashion and design museum is exploring the creations of Cristobal Balenciaga. Crowds are here for an early viewing of the exhibition of a designer credited for introducing revolutionary shapes to fashion, like the tunic, the sack, the baby doll dress and the shift dress. However, despite his importance in fashion history - Cristobal Balenciaga is not a well-recognised name to those outside the fashion bubble. Shy and wary of the press, Balenciaga has arguably been surpassed in the public-consciousness by his great rival Christian Dior. Cassie Davies-Strodder, curator of Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion at the V&A is hoping revive his fame. She says: "So I think Balenciaga is one of the most important and influential fashion designers of the 20th Century but I think his name has fallen out of fashion history a bit, he's not a household name like Christian Dior for example and I think that's because he was a very private person, he was very press shy, he wasn't really interested in promoting himself but we really wanted to reassert his importance and not only in the 50s and 60s but his continuing and profound influence on fashion right up to the present day." Cristobal Balenciaga was born in the north Spanish province of Gipuzkoa in 1895. As a boy he accompanied his mother, a seamstress, to fittings with her clients. This inspired him to start a tailor's apprenticeship at the age of 12. His mastery at tailoring quickly gained him the patronage of rich clients and he produced clothing for Spain's royal family. When the Civil War came he left his native Spain and moved to Paris, where in the 1950s and 60s he would go on to produce his most famous creations. Davies-Strodder says: "So I think the Balenciaga look is really distilled in the late 1960s and I think its the very architectural shape, it's minimalistic, it's pared back he often does very clever things with pattern cutting and it's a dress that frames rather than restricts the body." A section of the exhibition is dedicated to exploring the designer's legacy and influence on those who followed in his footsteps. It displays the dresses and fashion of contemporary designers who have built on the foundations Balenciaga laid in the 50s and 60s. Molly Goddard is a London-based fashion designer, whose black baby doll dress is on display at the Balenciaga exhibition. Goddard cites the designer as a major influence on her work : "Yeah, I think Balenciaga is one of the most important figures in fashion. I think his bravery and his use of volume at a time when not many other people were doing anything like it makes him one of the most important figures, yeah." For her the intrigue of how he created his dresses is what is so fascinating about his work. "Like I don't know how some of the things are made and that to me is really interesting, they either look very natural and the fabric has just created this incredible shape and the cutting has or you know there's some amazing structure within it that's creating that and I think that intrigue is what is always exciting for me," she says. X-ray artist Nick Veasey has made life-size X-ray prints, looking beneath the fabric at the intricate underpinnings of some of the collection's key dresses. He used his mobile X-ray studio to create these never-before-seen images of Balenciaga's creations. Game On: London museum celebrates video game design
(5 Sep 2018) LEADIN: The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is home to medieval artworks and renaissance sculptures, but its gallery walls are now being graced by a more modern form of design - video games. A new exhibit at the London museum explores the process of creating big-budget video games - from notebook scribbles to digital prototypes. STORYLINE: Game on at the V&A. A new exhibit, named 'Videogames: Design/Play/Disrupt,' is exploring the creative work that goes into making big budget titles or simplistic indie creations. Visitors can get to grips with handmade arcade cabs and new mobile games. Curators claim it's about time video games received the recognition they're due. There are an estimated 2.2 billion gamers worldwide, the global market is expected to grow to over $180 billion USD in 2021. "Video game design is one of the most fascinating and interesting design fields of our time," says the exhibit's curator Marie Foulston. "And as a museum of design, this is the perfect space for us to really be going into detail and making visible the creation and craft that goes into creating video games." The exhibit gives a glimpse into the creative process behind popular games. Scribbled sketches of gothic characters, hunters and swords show the early development of what became 2015's 'Bloodborne' by Tokyo-based developer FromSoftware. Hello Games' space adventure 'No Man's Sky' featured about 18 quintillion procedurally-generated planets. Developers estimated it would take about 500 billion years for a player to visit each planet even for just a second. To help the art team check each planet's colour scheme, they created virtual camera drones to "visit" every one. "We look at video games with a number of different approaches," explains research curator Kristian Volsing. "And one of them is looking at just the design process and picking out different elements of design that relate to different titles. "And really exploring those in detail from the illustrations and notebooks, through to concept art, through to digital prototypes." The exhibit shows how video games have the potential to explore complex and sensitive subject matter - from race and gun violence, to sexuality and politics. One simplistic 8-bit style mobile game on show, called 'Phone Story,' critiques the manufacture and distribution of smartphones. At one point gamers must patrol children mining the metallic mineral coltan in the Democratic Republic of Congo, at another they must save suicidal workers at a Chinese manufacturing plant. "We have examples of games that deal with the experience of racism, or games that look at the lived experience of LGBTQ lives as well," says Volsing. "They're a fascinating medium in that sense." The exhibit also shows how digital designs can leave video game worlds and enter our own. Styles featured in 'Splatoon's' fictional city of 'Inkopolis' have since been turned into fan memorabilia, from hats to t-shirts. But don't expect to encounter Mario or Sonic The Hedgehog. Curator Foulston says the show only features video games from the mid-2000s onwards - an influential moment in the development of modern titles, she says. "You have a whole host of technological catalysts, from smartphones, to broadband, to social media, all of which has had a radical impact on the way that games are designed, the way that they're discussed and the way that they're played," she says.
