Active Shooter Drill - Memorial Regional Hospital

03:17
HOLLYWOOD, FL - Memorial Regional Hospital’s Trauma Center set the stage for a drill involving an active shooter scenario on Thursday September 1. The hospital simulated an incoming call via med-com from Broward County 911 dispatch describing a post active shooter event in which 25 victims shot with a large caliber rifle were in need of immediate stabilization and transport to the nearest Level-I Trauma Center – Memorial Regional Hospital Trauma Center. Within minutes first responders from Hollywood, Hallandale, Broward Sherriff’s Office, Miramar and Davie brought the injured victims to the emergency room where trauma physicians, surgeons, nurses focused on the aftermath and treatment of patients. As part of the drill, family reunification procedures at the hospital also took place. The drill served as a learning environment allowing emergency agencies the ability to activate emergency response plans, policies and procedures and work collaboratively. Timothy Curtin accepts Memorial Healthcare System's award for Health Intervention with Targeted Services. This initiative secured Memorial (MHS) (Hollywood, Florida) the winning spot for a 2014 Gage Award in the Population Health Category. The Health Intervention with Targeted Services (HITS) program is an outreach initiative that offers education, preventive care, and eligibility assistance for the uninsured and underinsured. HITS helped about half of its participants enroll in Medicaid, Florida's Children's Health Insurance Program, or MHS community health centers. Over three years, the program helped MHS save $284,856 in the emergency department, about $2.8 million in inpatient costs, and roughly $4 million overall.
Memorial's Five Hospitals Earn Top Grade In National Hospital Safety Rankings

01:06
Hollywood, FL – Five hospitals within the Memorial Healthcare System each earned an “A” grade in a national ranking of safety at general, acute-care hospitals. It’s the second consecutive period all the Memorial facilities reviewed received the highest possible ranking in the “Leapfrog Hospital Safety Guide,” a respected source that includes data from more than 2,500 hospitals. The facilities – Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Regional Hospital South, Memorial Hospital Pembroke, and Memorial Hospital Miramar – were each given a composite score of “A” based on 27 different, nationally-reported patient safety measures that indicate how well hospitals protect patients from preventable errors, injuries and infections. Among hospitals within 100 miles of Hollywood, just 10 earned “A” grades in the Spring 2018 rankings, with Memorial’s five facilities accounting for half that total. Additionally, Memorial Hospital Miramar is among an elite group of only 49 hospitals in the United States to earn Leapfrog’s top grade in every rating period since 2012. “While it’s hard enough to achieve a single ‘A’ grade, it’s even harder to maintain it. To repeat outstanding patient safety performance requires organizational commitment, leadership buy-in, thoughtful processes and good communication,” said Erica Mobley, Director of Operations, The Leapfrog Group. “It also requires vigilance – a focused mindfulness around making sure that patients and their safety really do come first when they enter your hospital’s doors.” According to Leapfrog, hospital errors, accidents, injuries and infections are collectively the third-leading cause of death in the United States. The organization is a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that aims to improve healthcare quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public at www.hospitalsafetygrade.org. Updated rankings are released each spring and fall. Pediatric hospitals are reviewed separately. “This level of outstanding performance can only be achieved by having an unwavering commitment to our patients and their safety, as well as a culture that empowers doctors and staff to always do the right thing for our patients and their families,” said Memorial Healthcare System Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Stanley Marks, MD, FACS. “This achievement shows how Memorial’s leadership and clinical teams successfully align, communicate, and deliver a patient experience rated among the safest in the country.” Memorial Healthcare System is one of the largest public healthcare systems in the country and a national leader in quality care and patient satisfaction, highly regarded for its exceptional patient and family-centered care. Its facilities include Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital South, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Miramar, Memorial Hospital Pembroke, and Memorial Manor nursing home. A Gift of Love: Husband Donates Kidney To Wife - Memorial Transplant Institute

06:11
When Monica and Cesar met 23 years ago, they fell in love and became a perfect match. Their love for each other became Monica’s life-saving grace, when Cesar donated his kidney to his devoted wife, making it the first kidney transplant for the new Memorial Transplant Institute. The couple is celebrating their 23rd wedding anniversary this week. The transplant team completed the five-hour procedure on February 19, a successful milestone for the new adult and pediatric transplant program providing South Florida residents greater access to quality kidney and heart transplant care. “This is an amazing gift,” said Monica, shortly before going home four days after the surgery. “God put this man in my life for a reason. He saved my life.” “We are so grateful to Memorial for everything that has been done,” Cesar said. “It’s a new start to her freedom.” The kidney transplant comes less than a year after Memorial received federal approval from UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) to launch an adult and pediatric kidney transplant program at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. The Institute also received approval to establish a living donor kidney recovery component, including open and laparoscopic nephrectomies. The kidney transplant program, offering pediatric and adult kidney transplantation, now joins Memorial’s adult and pediatric cardiac transplant programs under the umbrella of the Memorial Transplant Institute. The Institute is the only one of its kind in Broward County and one of only two programs in South Florida to offer kidney and heart transplants to both children and adults. To date, Memorial has performed 20 adult heart transplants since 2014. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has performed 40 since 2010. The skilled kidney transplant team is led by Dr. Juan Arenas, Chief of Transplant Institute and Surgical Director of Pediatric and Adult Surgical Kidney Transplant. He works with a highly-talented team of nurses, perfusionist, social workers, nutritionist and laboratory medicine experts, who were all on cue for the recent transplant. “We are so glad we finally accomplished what we set out to do,” said Dr. Arenas. “It was a long road to get here, but we had an incredible match, an incredible choice of patient and donor recipient and everything went as planned.” Prior to federal approval, statistics showed that a large number of patients did not have sufficient access to kidney transplant services and many had to seek services outside South Florida and even out of state. Dr. Fernando Pedraza, MD will head the adult kidney program as its medical director while Dr. Alex Constantinescu, MD is the medical director for the pediatric program. Both physicians will lead the management of kidney transplant patient care before and after transplant. The kidney program now offers cadaveric kidney transplants, pediatric kidney transplants and living donor kidney transplants. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has provided the only outpatient Pediatric Dialysis unit in Broward County since 2004. Offering pediatric and adult kidney care services under one Institute brings Memorial’s effort to offer the South Florida community complete cardiac and kidney care. The adult cardiac transplant team was established at Memorial in xxx when Memorial Regional Hospital earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its ventricular assist device (VAD) destination therapy program. Destination therapy VADs are implanted in patients with refractory heart failure who are not eligible for a heart transplant. VADs have been proven to dramatically improve the long-term survival and the quality of life of end-stage heart failure patients. The expert cardiac care at Memorial Healthcare System also encompasses southwest Broward County, while also covering the spectrum from pediatric to adult cardiac services. Cardiac experts at Memorial Hospital West perform catheterization and emergency angioplasties. The pediatric cardiac team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Heart Institute – led by Dr. Frank Scholl, Chief, Pediatric Congenital Heart Surgery and Surgical Director, Pediatric Heart Transplant and Dr. Maryanne Chrisant, Medical Director of Pediatric Heart Transplant Cardiomyopathy and Heart Failure Services – has successfully performed 40 pediatric heart transplants since 2010. Between all the programs dedicated to transplant care at Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Hospital West and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Memorial Healthcare System is poised to offer the community total heart and kidney care from the youngest pediatric patients to adults, and throughout South Broward County and beyond.
Memorial Healthcare System Wins Three Distinguished Awards from Florida Hospital Association

02:58
Hollywood-based Memorial Healthcare System was recently honored with three significant awards by the Florida Hospital Association at its annual meeting: “Caregiver of the Year,” “Innovation of the Year in Patient Care,” and “Best Hospital Workplace.” Rayford Shipman earned the ‘Celebration of Service’ caregiver award (video) for providing those who’ve suffered traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, lost limbs, or had strokes opportunities to participate in sports tailored to their abilities. As manager of the Adaptive Sports & Recreation program at Memorial Regional Hospital South, Shipman positively impacted more than 500 physically disabled patients in 2016 by facilitating their participation in hand cycling, disc golf, adaptive bowling, fishing, and other activities. The Memorial Sharks, a wheelchair basketball team he organized, finished second in the nation in recent competition. Shipman continues to grow the program through a variety of efforts. The award for “Innovation of the Year in Patient Care” (over 150 beds) recognizes a multi-disciplinary collaboration between medical teams at the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The group performed a ventricular tachycardia ablation via a trans-apical approach on a 14-month-old, just the third time the procedure had ever been done anywhere, and the first time it had ever been performed on a child. Their work corrected Amelia’s arrhythmia and saved the young girl’s life. Memorial Healthcare System (over 150 beds) was honored for “Best Hospital Workplace” for promoting employee satisfaction and engagement. Its staff of more than 13,000 was provided opportunities to advance through merit, professional development, and paid college tuition. Nearly 20% of Memorial’s workforce has been with the healthcare system for more 15 years and its turnover rate is 33% lower than the industry average.

Memorial Healthcare Uses FaceTime When Responding To Stroke Patients

02:31
Memorial Healthcare System of Hollywood, Florida, is using smartphone technology to improve outcomes for stroke patients and ultimately save lives. FaceTime video is the fundamental tool in a new pilot program in which Memorial Healthcare System is working with Miramar Fire Rescue in Miramar, Florida, to obtain valuable patient information that enables stroke teams at Memorial Regional Hospital and Memorial Hospital West to be at the ready when stroke patients arrive. Harnessing the features of FaceTime is the brainchild of Brijesh P Mehta, MD, a NeuroInterventional Surgeon at the Memorial Neuroscience Institute and Director of Stroke and Neurocritical Care, who says timing is everything, particularly when a large vessel stroke occurs.

Memorial Awarded Grant To Provide Behavioral Health And Primary Healthcare Under One-Stop Clinic

02:29
Memorial Healthcare System is now providing residents in South Broward with integrated primary and behavioral healthcare under the same roof as part of a federally and county funded grant aimed at delivering personalized treatment plans for patients. The Mind/Body Wellness Project – administered by Memorial Outpatient Behavioral Health Center and South Broward Community Health Services– will form a Core Team that provides the services at its newly expanded outpatient clinic located in Hollywood, Florida. The federal grant, awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration with additional funding through the Broward County Department of Human Services, will provide for a dedicated nurse practitioner, an RN Care Coordinator, a Medical Assistant, an Integrated Care Manager/Social Worker, a Peer Wellness Coach and a Psychiatric Pharmacy Resident. The resources and personnel provided by the grant is now in addition to the center’s established multidisciplinary and multicultural team of licensed psychiatrists, advanced registered nurse practitioners, licensed psychotherapists and certified peer support specialists who use effective evidence-based approaches to help patients achieve their goals. Additional services will include nutritional services, exercise classes, smoking cessation and chronic disease self-management support. Each ancillary program is evidence-based and targets behavioral changes toward promoting health outcomes of the patient, said the center’s medical director, Clara Alvarez Villalba, MD. “Logistically, The Mind/Body Wellness Project and the Telepsychiatry will increase the access to a full range of medical care for patients. It will help improve coordination of care among providers.” The services are being provided at the Center for Behavioral Health, 3400 N. 29th Avenue, Hollywood, Florida. Additional clinical rooms have already been constructed and are now fully operational. As part of this initiative, telepsychiatry units will be installed at two South Broward Community Health Centers and one at Memorial Outpatient Behavioral Health Center so patients will be able to access behavioral health providers via video as part of their primary care visit. Project director David Freedman said having a clinic that provides both mental and physical healthcare will benefit patients who often seek help in one area, but not both. “While mental disorders including substance use issues are common in the United States, the burden of chronic illness is particularly concentrated among these patients,” Freedman said. Adults with both physical and behavioral health issues experience greater morbidity and mortality than those in the general population that do not have these co-occuring medical issues, Freedman said. Under the program, the Core Team will meet weekly to develop, oversee and manage a personalized treatment plan for each patient. Patients’ disease specific improvements will be evaluated initially to establish a baseline followed by six-month measurements of blood pressure, body/mass index, waist circumference, breath CO, plasma glucose, HgA1c, HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Mental health symptom reduction and sobriety over time will be monitored as well. For more information about the program, call (954) 276-3455. About Memorial Healthcare System’s Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services The mental health professionals at Memorial Behavioral Health Services provide comprehensive psychiatric and psychotherapy services designed to get individuals on the road to psychological well-being. Innovative evidence based programs are available for both adults and children through a variety of inpatient and outpatient programs, and treatment plans are tailored to meet the specific needs of each patient. Various grant-funded programs are offered at Memorial Behavioral Health Services including the Rebel's Drop-In Center, a peer-run outpatient program that operates in partnership with the Broward County Department of Human Services and the Broward Behavioral Health Coaliton/ Florida Department of Children and Families. Memorial Behavioral Health Services also receives Ryan White funding and offers HIV support through psychiatric evaluation and medication management, individual counseling, intensive substance abuse outpatient services, mental health counseling and ambulatory (outpatient) detoxification. Additional funding for substance abuse treatment is made available through the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition/FL Department of Children and Families. Memorial Behavioral Health Services accepts many health care and managed care plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Self-paying patients are also welcomed.
