If you wish to master aurora photography and learn from award winning photographers then check offer by Iceland Photo Tours at https://iceland-photo-tours.com/ On 25th February 2014 Sun produced X4.9 flare which on 27th February caused G2 (KP 6) geomagnetic storm on Earth. It was the brightest aurora display so far during this solar maximum which I could witness with auroral displays overhead in the far north of Scotland. This short movie illustrates what has been seen from latitude 58.3 degrees north. What Causes The Northern Lights?

03:33
There are many misconceptions about what causes the Aurora Borealis when it really requires solar winds, magnetic fields and excited atmospheric gases. Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/climate-weather/atmospheric/question471.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/FMuiBa Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/TR4YyU Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com The Northern Lights are beautiful and odd and have understandably inspired many myths. The Vikings thought they were a bridge between our world and Asgard where Thor and the other gods live. In another Norse myth, they are the light reflected of the armor of the Valkyries. And people in Finland thought it was the archangel Michael (John Travolta) battling Beelzebub (the devil). Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. All wrong. It was the famous early astronomer and recanter of science, Galileo Galilei, who gave the Northern lights the name Aurora Borealis, which means “dawn of the North” in Latin. But it wasn’t until Norwegian scientist Christian Birkeland figured it out in 1896 that the true origin of the auroras was understood. In the center of the Earth, the molten iron core generates magnetic fields that extend through the crust and into space around the planet, creating what’s called Earth’s magnetosphere. It’s a pretty great thing that Earth has it, because the magnetosphere protects us from all manner of charged particles spit out from the Sun. The Sun is so hot that it produces plasma (a fourth state of matter) where positively charged atoms (ions) and negatively charge electrons flow freely around one another. These highly charged particles have enough energy to escape the Sun’s gravity and fly out into space, barreling toward Earth at 1 million miles per hour like a shotgun blast of solar hate. This is called solar wind. When they encounter our magnetosphere, most of these ions and electrons bounce harmlessly off and Earth is saved. But some of these particles make it through the magnetosphere where it’s weakest (at the north and south poles), and when they do the light show begins. The electrons that make it into our atmosphere interact with some of the elements there, particularly oxygen and nitrogen. The electrons transfer energy to them, exciting them in the process. To calm down, the excited atoms must release some energy, which they do as tiny packets of light called photons -- beautiful, beautiful photons. Depending on where in the atmosphere the electrons interact with these other atoms, different colors are produced. Oxygen emits a yellow-green color up to about 150 miles in the atmosphere. After that, it turns red. Nitrogen emits a nice blue color about 60 miles up. And don’t forget these colors can blend, which can create glowing pinks, purples and whites. It’s like Miami Beach up there. This interplay is most vibrant during solar storms, which depend somewhat on the Sun’s solar cycle. And, although these lights can be produced at all hours, they aren’t visible during the day, since the sunlight outshines them. Aurora Borealis / Northern Lights in Alaska (Timelapse)

02:07
Timelapse video compilation of the aurora borealis (northern lights) taken in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the evenings of March 21-22, 2012. 1,705 still frames were captured using a tripod-mounted Canon 5D Mark II and two lenses: EF 16-35mm/2.8L USM and EF 14mm/2.8L II USM. On March 21, the aurora was faint: we were only able to see it by naked eye for half an hour or less during the evening. On March 22, the aurora was searingly bright, and lasted for over 2.5 hours, spanning most of the night sky (leaving only a dark hole to the south). We shot for hours each night in temperatures ranging from -5ºF to -20ºF. The 5D2 was a champ, and I was able to shoot around 600 pictures on a single battery charge, even in those temperatures! The Canon TC-80N timelapse remote also worked well, although the settings LCDs on both devices became very slow in the cold, sometimes taking a full second to refresh when I changed settings. The still images were processed and exported in Lightroom 4. Individual clips were assembled in Quicktime 7 and then brought into Final Cut Pro X for editing into a sequence. Special thanks to Julian and Ildi Cohen (http://juliancohen.com), my photography companions during the trip, to Casey Thompson, a local aurora photographer (http://caseythompsonphotography.com/), for his tips on shooting locations, and to mobygratis.com for music.

What Causes The Northern Lights? (Aurora Borealis)

04:56
The aurora borealis or northern lights is one of the most spectacular natural displays on the planet. Theories about its origins have been debated for centuries and common misconceptions persist that the aurora is the sun's rays scattered off ice crystals in the high atmosphere. In truth, the light is created more than 100km above Earth's surface as high speed electrons and protons ejected from the sun in a solar flare or coronal mass ejection collide with air molecules in the upper atmosphere. The charged particles from the sun excite air molecules which then de-excite by emitting light. The display is most common around the north and south poles because the Earth's magnetic field deflects the solar wind from the equator to the poles. Here the magnetic field dips towards the Earth's surface, channeling the charged particles into the atmosphere. Music is by Kevin MacLeod http://incompetech.com, the song is called Mirage

GREEN LIGHTS IN SKY 2. NORTHERN LIGHTS ABOVE TREES 3. VARIOUS OF WOMAN WATCHING NORTHERN LIGHTS 4. GREEN LIGHTS IN SKY STORY: The Northern Lights were seen dancing in the sky over the Arctic Circle for several hours on Monday (September 10) evening. The auroras could be seen lighting up the skies above the northern Finnish city of Rovaniemi just before midnight, and according to a local Northern Lights photographer, this was the best display of Auroras Borealis at the start of what will be a good season for aurora watching. The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, are a result of electrically charged particles from the sun entering the Earth's atmosphere. The phenomenon is known as Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights, in the Northern Hemisphere and as Aurora Australis, or the Southern Lights, in the Southern Hemisphere.

The most common color displayed is a brilliant yellow-green, but the aurora borealis can also produce red, blue and purple patterns. An aurora, sometimes referred to as a polar lights or northern lights, is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions. Auroras are produced when the magnetosphere is sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind that the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma, mainly in the form of electrons and protons, precipitate them into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere), where their energy is lost. Tourists just south of the Arctic Circle were treated to a stunning display as the Northern Lights lit up the night sky in Rovaniemi, Finland on Friday (December 9). Just after 2300 local time (2100 GMT) atmospheric conditions on the sun fuelled another breathtaking display, turning the skies a swirling green and prompting tourists and locals alike to rush outside to watch. Local stargazers say that the Northern Lights appear due to a high coronal hole on the surface of the sun, coupled with strong solar winds. What are the top stories today? The World's Very First REAL-TIME Northern Lights Captured in 4K Ultra High Definition

04:25
Come along with us on a virtual experience, Aurora Chasing in 4K Ultra High Def! Despite being under the weather (in all senses, it was well below zero and we were quite sick with the flu), Marketa, Angus and I ventured out to capture the Northern Lights with our newest tool, the Atomos Shogun 4K external recorder. We combined this with a Sony a7S and a DJI Ronin for a look at what's it like to "Chase the Lights." The Atomos did great and while the Ronin usually does a good job it seemed quite jittery on this night. I'm in contact with support and hope to find a resolution to this but it's done that the last few times I've taken it out in temps colder than 10ºF. Keep in mind it is very windy, I'm stumbling around in knee deep snow and it's about 0ºF so considering, it still held up rather well. This is a sample of how the Ronin should and usually does behave. http://youtu.be/1bb5qGmtG_M As of 1/14/15 I'm still waiting to hear back from DJI. It seems we have a few things to work out both with the Ronin and the Shogun but are very excited for this amazing trio once we get things rolling smoothly. If you'd like to be out there having your portraits taken in front of these magnificent Northern Lights, join us for a night under the Aurora. http://www.ronnmurrayphoto.com/NorthernLightsTours/TourOptions/Winter-Aurora-Alaska This video intended to show what's its like to actually be out beneath these amazing Auroras we witness almost nightly. Northern lights over Minnesota – timelapse video

West Coast light in sky emits Bright light leaves green glow like northern lights - UFO?

02:39
Shooting light in sky That explodes into a light that grows to cover the entire sky and stalls leaving a green glow like the northern lights that didn't dissipate for more than 10 minutes. UFO? I saw what looked like a shooting star (only traveling very slowly) coming from South to North in the Western sky over the ocean in San Diego. In front of the light there appeared to be an explosion like a firework and it left a very bright trail like a meteor and that's when I got my camera phone out and started taping. After the white tail had gone it looked more like a star in the sky but moving very quickly from South to North on the Western Skyline. In the video when the bright light begins to dissipate you can see what looks like a star again not moving across the sky but it appears to get smaller but never really disappears. A lot of what I could see with my eyes did not get picked up by the camera.

25 Interesting Facts About Northern Lights You Should Know Before You See Them

05:17
Officially known as Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are one of nature's most spectacular visual phenomena. Appearing in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, curtains or shooting rays, the northern lights' amazing light display can be observed in the sky of high latitude regions such as Norway or Canada. You might know the cause of this natural phenomenon (collision of solar wind and magnetospheric charged particles) but there are many more interesting facts about this unreal spectacle that are worth learning. Here are 25 of them, illustrated with some of the most amazing Northern Lights pictures you have ever seen. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the physical list here for some extra info and explanations - http://list25.com/25-interesting-facts-about-northern-lights-you-should-know-before-you-see-them/ And now for a quick preview: The most spectacular Northern Lights in recent recorded history are considered those from the "Great geomagnetic storm" on 28 August and 2 September 1859. Studies have shown that a solar storm of this magnitude occurring today would likely cause widespread problems for modern civilization. Astronauts on board the International Space Station are at the same altitude as the Northern Lights and see them from the side. The Southern Lights offer the same visual display as the Northern Lights but since the South Pole is even more inhospitable and inaccessible than the North Pole, it is more difficult to view the Southern Aurora. Therefore, the Northern Lights are more popular and get almost all the attention. There are several towns famous for their great conditions for watching the Northern Lights. In North America, the aurora tourism capital is Yellowknife (Northwest Territories, Canada), while Tromso (Northern Norway) is the same for Europe. There have been many legends about the Northern Lights. Some North American Inuit tribes call the aurora „aqsarniit“ (meaning “football players”) thinking it is the spirits of the dead playing football with a head of a walrus. The colors of the Northern Lights depend on what gas is involved and how high in the ionosphere the reaction takes place. Blue and green lights form at lower altitudes while red color comes from the highest altitudes. Auroras tend to be more frequent and spectacular during high solar sunspot activity, which cycles over approximately eleven years. The last climax was in 2013. [...]

Green spirits: Northern lights (aurora borealis)

Follow me on facebook! http://facebook.com/nlblog A short video of the northern lights seen around Tromsø during the 2014-2015 season. I have focused on getting real time sequences this time: some video sequences here are recorded in real time, they appear grainy because of the extreme camera settings. I did not modify the sequence or treat the video in any way to show how furiously the selfish lady can be moving, and how nice her dress can be. There are other less noisy sequences: those are time-lapse sequences that I have slowed down to reflect as much as possible the real time phenomenon. In order to achieve that, I processed the sequence by using a technique called frame interpolation: what it basically does is to create a middle frame from two frames, and doing that several times it is possible to create an almost real-time video based on a time-lapse sequence. Let me know (comment here or in Facebook) if you want to know more about the videos, or how does the frame interpolation work!

AURORA BOREALIS FULL [HD] VIDEO - Vangelis - Rachel's Song - NORTHERN LIGHTS- Blade Runner theme

"Aurora Borealis" and "Aurora Australis" Aurora boreal /polar An aurora (plural: aurorae or auroras; from the Latin word aurora, "dawn") is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere). The charged particles originate in the magnetosphere and solar wind and, on Earth, are directed by the Earth's magnetic field into the atmosphere. Aurora is classified as diffuse or discrete aurora. Most aurorae occur in a band known as the auroral zone, which is typically 3° to 6° in latitudinal extent and at all local times or longitudes. The auroral zone is typically 10° to 20° from the magnetic pole defined by the axis of the Earth's magnetic dipole. During a geomagnetic storm, the auroral zone will expand to lower latitudes. The diffuse aurora is a featureless glow in the sky which may not be visible to the naked eye even on a dark night and defines the extent of the auroral zone. The discrete aurorae are sharply defined features within the diffuse aurora which vary in brightness from just barely visible to the naked eye to bright enough to read a newspaper at night. Discrete aurorae are usually observed only in the night sky because they are not as bright as the sunlit sky. Aurorae occasionally occur poleward of the auroral zone as diffuse patches[3] or arcs (polar cap arcs, which are generally invisible to the naked eye. In northern latitudes, the effect is known as the aurora borealis (or the northern lights), named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas, by Pierre Gassendi in 1621. Auroras seen near the magnetic pole may be high overhead, but from farther away, they illuminate the northern horizon as a greenish glow or sometimes a faint red, as if the Sun were rising from an unusual direction. Discrete aurorae often display magnetic field lines or curtain-like structures, and can change within seconds or glow unchanging for hours, most often in fluorescent green. The aurora borealis most often occurs near the equinoctes. The northern lights have had a number of names throughout history. The Cree call this phenomenon the "Dance of the Spirits". In Europe, in the Middle Ages, the auroras were commonly believed a sign from God. Its southern counterpart, the aurora australis (or the southern lights), has almost identical features to the aurora borealis and changes simultaneously with changes in the northern auroral zone and is visible from high southern latitudes in Antarctica, South America, New Zealand, and Australia. Aurorae occur on other planets. Similar to the Earth's aurora, they are visible close to the planet's magnetic poles. Modern style guides recommend that the names of meteorological phenomena, such as aurora borealis, be uncapitalized. Auroras result from emissions of photons in the Earth's upper atmosphere, above 80 km (50 mi), from ionized nitrogen atoms regaining an electron, and oxygen and nitrogen atoms returning from an excited state to ground state.[9] They are ionized or excited by the collision of solar wind and magnetospheric particles being funneled down and accelerated along the Earth's magnetic field lines; excitation energy is lost by the emission of a photon, or by collision with another atom or molecule: oxygen emissions green or brownish-red, depending on the amount of energy absorbed. nitrogen emissions blue or red; blue if the atom regains an electron after it has been ionized, red if returning to ground state from an excited state. Oxygen is unusual in terms of its return to ground state: it can take three quarters of a second to emit green light and up to two minutes to emit red. Collisions with other atoms or molecules will absorb the excitation energy and prevent emission. Because the very top of the atmosphere has a higher percentage of oxygen and is sparsely distributed such collisions are rare enough to allow time for oxygen to emit red. Collisions become more frequent progressing down into the atmosphere, so that red emissions do not have time to happen, and eventually even green light emissions are prevented. Auroras are associated with the solar wind, a flow of ions continuously flowing outward from the Sun. Finding Northern Lights in Iceland - Iceland Road Trip Guide (Ep 2)

Things to do in Iceland will most definitely include an Iceland Road Trip around the Ring Road and/or Golden Circle. I teamed up with friend and fellow travel YouTuber, Steve Hänisch, of back-packer.org, to set out on a 12-day Iceland vacation adventure around the ring road! This is episode two! ------ Go subscribe to Steve's awesome travel channel: https://www.youtube.com/BackPackerOrg ------ ☆ MORE INFO FROM THIS ICELAND TRAVEL VIDEO ☆ Iceland Travel Partners: - Iceland Car Rental - https://sadcars.com/ - Where to stay in Iceland - homeaway.com (see below) THINGS TO DO in Iceland (in this episode): ► Eyjafjörður Fjord - One of the best places in Iceland to see the Northern Lights. Northern Iceland has very little light pollution, so tracking the Northern Lights over the Fjords is a great idea. ► Ásbyrgi Canyon - This massive canyon was formed way back after the ice age as melting glacier floods ripped giant divots into the earth and left this beautiful valley and rock walls in its path. ► Northern Lights - In order to have the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland, check out this website we used to track the cloud coverage and aurora activity. http://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora/ ► Godafoss Waterfall - An expansive horseshoe-shaped cascade that’s probably my favorite waterfall of the entire trip. ► Hverir or Namafjall geothermal field - Located in northeastern Iceland around the geothermal region of Lake Mývatn - a vast area of hot springs, sulfur crystals, and boiling mud pots. ► Dettifoss Waterfall - Said to be Europe’s most powerful waterfall, and we’re getting a unique perspective - by moonlight. ------ WHERE WE STAYED in Iceland (with HomeAway): 1. The amazing Aurora Borealis also known as the Northern Lights are a truly spectacular light show here in the night sky as this short stock video demonstrates. This incredible phenomenon usually occurs when when solar storms from the sun interfere or react with magnetosphere (magnetic shield around the earth) which create multi coloured light shows that can be seen at either poles.

A huge display of bright green Northern Lights appeared in the skies over Rovaniemi in the Arctic Circle. During the evening they were seen in the form of a wide arch, their colors changing from green to white to purple, and were captured on video by a local enthusiast. The phenomenon, also known as Aurora Borealis, is a result of electrically charged particles from the sun entering the Earth's atmosphere.
