The ED3575 Managed Ethernet Extender from EtherWan enables the extension of Ethernet connectivity over existing copper pair allowing legacy infrastructure to be leveraged for IP networks and extending the Ethernet distance limitations of 100 meters. With 6 Fast Ethernet, 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 2 copper extender ports, the ED3575 provides excellent network extension flexibility. The ED3575 is built with hardened specifications, providing wide temperature operation range from ‑40 C to 75 C to overcome severe outdoor environments. The ED3575's RJ11 and terminal block extender ports provide long distance transmission with 100Mbps rate within 300 meters, or 1Mbps up to 2200 meters. The ED3575's management provides remote login feature to execute configuration changing, link status check and device maintenance. Ford Assembly Line Workers Try Out Exoskeleton Tech to Boost Performance!!! SUBSCRIBE PLEASE - https://goo.gl/eR1GYQ “Built tough”: That’s the slogan used in ads for Ford trucks, which are shown hauling massive loads, towing equipment, and roaring across rugged terrain. But the workers who assemble those trucks in Ford’s manufacturing plants are subject to human frailties. They can suffer from back and shoulder pain as a result of carrying out the repetitive tasks required by their jobs, particularly as they work on chassis suspended above them. Ford estimates that some assembly workers lift their arms about 4,600 times per day, or about 1 million times per year. So workers on Ford’s assembly lines in two U.S. factories are getting some extra help. In a pilot project, the workers are suiting up with the EksoVest, an upper-body exoskeleton from the Bay Area company Ekso Bionics. Ford plans to expand the test to factories in Europe and Latin America. Ekso Bionics is primarily known for its work in the medical sector: The company sells a lower-body exoskeleton that enables paraplegic people to walk again. But Russ Angold, cofounder, and CTO of Ekso Bionics, tells IEEE Spectrum that he’s also found significant demand in the industrial sector for exoskeletons. “In 2015 we started getting a lot of inquiries, cold calls coming in, with people asking, ‘Where’s our construction exoskeleton, where’s our industrial exoskeleton?’” Angold remembers. “They’d say, ‘You guys are helping paralyzed people walk, can you use the same tech to make our workers stronger?’” The company had a lot of relevant technology “sitting on the shelf,” Angold says. He notes that the company’s origins lie in a DARPA research project in the early 2000s that sought a full-body exoskeleton to help soldiers carry heavy loads.

Webinar brought to you by: IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society http://ieee-tems.org/ Young professionals in industry must eventually make a decision to follow a technical pipeline path or a management one.  Understanding how industry typically creates and maintains its technical pipelines helps individuals in making this decision. In today’s rapid moving technologies managing a technical pipeline is critical to a successful business. Typically companies initially look to their research and development teams to build this pipeline; while necessary it is not sufficient with today’s technical velocity. Teams such as enablement and support often do not consider a strong technical pipeline as a key management responsibility;  but these teams deal directly with the customer and their supply chain and often can provide a key innovation with products. This study examines the concept of a staff technical pipeline, where it traditionally is strong in a technical business together with the criteria typically expected for technical growth. Then we examine a case where the enablement  team is pushed to engage more technically and its direct impact on the business. Presented by Michael Condry. Michael was the Chief Technical Officer for Intel’s Global Ecosystem Development division focusing on customer innovation, design cost reduction, and integrating Intel technologies into customer designs.  He also led the technical staff development for the organization. He retired in June 2015. Michael’s career has a mixture of academic and industry positions, mostly in industry. Holding teaching and research positions at Princeton and University of Illinois. His industry roles included AT&T Bell-Labs, Sun Microsystems, and Intel. At Bell Labs he was a co-architect for the Bellmac-32 processor and co-designed the System V Inode File System whose successors are used today. At Sun he led standards for the Solaris/UNIX team founding the Open Group to enable these standards. Michael came to Intel to head up Networking Applications research in Intel Labs eventually moving to his Chief Technical Officer role.   His background includes projects in computer architecture, software, firmware, operating systems, networking, internet applications, standards, and computer security.  Michael is also a senior board member for the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, he created and chairs the IEEE Industry Forum conference series that has successfully engaged industry in over 12 conferences.  Michael is now on the board of the newly formulated IEEE Technical Engineering and Management Society.  Just recently, he was asked by the IEEE to chair committee and conference series on industrial uses of the Internet of Things technologies. Michael is also a member of the IEEE Computer Society for over 26 years and is the IEEE Silicon Valley Section Vice Chair. CS547: Human-Computer Interaction Seminar Crowdbotics: Writing Software Faster with Crowds Speaker: Anand Kulkarni, Crowbotics Crowd computing systems are now capable of doing more sophisticated work than ever before, accelerating the pace of creative work such as creating movies, carrying out research, and writing stories. How can crowds be used to accelerate software creation? This is a complex problem, requiring good methods for expert selection, program synthesis and collaboration. We’ll discuss strategies for accelerating software creation using crowds of geographically-diverse communities of software engineers, as well as the cultural and technical challenges that emerge. About the Speaker: Anand is founder of Crowdbotics, a startup using crowdsourcing and machine intelligence to accelerate the process of software development. Crowdbotics brings developers worldwide into a global community of software engineers that collaborate 1-1 with technology companies. Prior to that, Anand was Chief Scientist of LeadGenius, a Y Combinator-backed startup using human computation and deep learning to automate account-based marketing (ABM). Anand has been named as one of Forbes Magazine's "30 under 30" Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30. Anand has published in ACM, AAAI and IEEE magazines, journals, and conferences. Anand previously held a National Science Foundation graduate research fellowship in mathematics. He holds degrees in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, Mathematics, and Physics from UC Berkeley.

Currently, painting these walls requires at least two painters using a scissor lift, and working at such heights exposes painters to safety risks. But the PictoBot, which can run for four hours on one battery charge, requires only one human supervisor and can even operate in the dark. Robotic System for Palletizing 220-pound Tubs of Cattle Feed – Palladium Robotics

Heavy tub palletizing: https://www.fanucamerica.com/palletizing FANUC America Authorized System Integrator Palladium Robotics developed this robotic palletizing system to palletize very heavy tubs of cattle feed. Each tub weighs 220 pounds, making robotic handling an ideal solution for this application. The process starts as a tub of cattle feed reaches the end of a conveyor. Pallets are automatically fed from a pallet dispenser and the system lets the FANUC robot know when the pallet is ready. Additionally, a sensor lets the robot know when the tub is ready to be loaded onto the pallet. The robot uses a FANUC iRVision camera mounted on the end effector to ensure a lid has been placed on the tub. If FANUC iRVision detects that there is no lid present, the robot picks a lid from a stack and lids the tub. Once the robot detects that the part is ready and a lid is present it moves to pick the tub and places it on the pallet. The robot chosen for this system is FANUC’s M-410iC/315 kg payload robot – which is one of many different payload variants in FANUC’s industry leading line of M-410iC Series palletizing robots. The robot also picks slip sheets and places one before each layer of tubs. Once the pallet is full, the robot triggers the pallet dispenser to move the full pallet, and an empty pallet moves into position. The process repeats until all production is complete. [Recorded Oct 17, 2007] A rare and fascinating conversation with one of the most innovative semiconductor pioneers and esteemed business leaders of our time. Born in Ningbo (Zhejiang province), China, in 1931, Dr. Morris Chang is the founding chairman of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd. (TSMC), a revolutionary enterprise he founded in 1987. TSMC is a dedicated silicon foundry, an independent factory available to anyone for producing integrated circuits. Using this approach, both entrepreneurs and established semiconductor companies could avoid having to build their own semiconductor factories and focus instead on circuit features and system-level product design as the source of value. From 1958 to 1983, Chang worked at Texas Instruments (TI), rising to group vice president for its worldwide semiconductor business. Under Chang's leadership, TI emerged as the world's leading producer of integrated circuits. During his tenure the company also pioneered high-volume production of consumer products including calculators, digital watches, and the popular "Speak & Spell" electronic toy. In 1983, Chang left TI to become president and chief operating officer at General Instrument Corporation. After a year at General Instrument, Chang was recruited by the Taiwanese government to spearhead that country's industrial research organization, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). While there, he focused on issues relating to using technology to advance Taiwan's larger social and economic goals. It was in this capacity that Chang founded TSMC. In 1998, Chang was named by Business Week magazine as one of the Top 25 Managers of the Year and one of the Stars of Asia. In 2000, he received the IEEE Robert N. Noyce Award for exceptional contributions to the microelectronics industry. In 2005, he won the Nikkei Asia Prize for Regional Growth. On October 16, 2007, Chang will be inducted as a Fellow of the Computer History Museum. Chang is a Life Member Emeritus of MIT Corporation, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and serves on the advisory boards of the New York Stock Exchange, Stanford University, and the University of California at Berkeley. Chang holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from M.I.T. (1952, 1953), and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University (1964). Professor Harald Haas is Chair of Mobile Communications at the University of Edinburgh, and is the initiator, co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of pureLiFi Limited, as well as the Director of the LiFi Research and Development Center. In his 2011 TED Global talk “Wireless Data from Every Light Bulb”, he first introduced and coined the term ‘Li-Fi’, a technology for wireless communication between devices using light. The talk has since been watched online more than two and a half million times. Li-Fi was listed among the 50 best inventions in TIME Magazine and his work has since been covered in other international media such as the New York Times, BBC, MSNBC, CNN International, Wired UK, and many more. Towards ambient intelligence in AI-assisted healthcare spaces - Dr Fei-Fei Li, Stanford University

Abstract: Artificial intelligence has begun to impact healthcare in areas including electronic health records, medical images, and genomics. But one aspect of healthcare that has been largely left behind thus far is the physical environments in which healthcare delivery takes place: hospitals, clinics, and assisted living facilities, among others. In this talk I will discuss our work on endowing healthcare spaces with ambient intelligence, using computer vision-based human activity understanding in the healthcare environment to assist clinicians with complex care. I will first present pilot implementations of AI-assisted healthcare spaces where we have equipped the environment with visual sensors. I will then discuss our work on human activity understanding, a core problem in computer vision. I will present deep learning methods for dense and detailed recognition of activities, and efficient action detection, important requirements for ambient intelligence, and I will discuss these in the context of several clinical applications. Finally, I will present work and future directions for integrating this new source of healthcare data into the broader clinical data ecosystem. Bio: Fei-Fei Li is a Professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford, and the Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab. In 2017, she also joined Google Cloud as Chief Scientist of AI and Machine Learning. Dr. Li’s main research areas are in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision and cognitive and computational neuroscience. She has published almost 200 scientific articles in top-tier journals and conferences, including Nature, PNAS, Journal of Neuroscience, New England Journal of Medicine, CVPR, ICCV, NIPS, ECCV, IJCV, and IEEE-PAMI. Dr. Li obtained her B.A. degree in physics from Princeton in 1999 with High Honors, and her PhD degree in electrical engineering from California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 2005. She joined Stanford in 2009 as an assistant professor, and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2012. Prior to that, she was on faculty at Princeton University (2007-2009) and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (2005-2006). Dr. Li is the inventor of ImageNet and the ImageNet Challenge, a critical large-scale dataset and benchmarking effort that has contributed to the latest developments in computer vision and deep learning in AI. In addition to her technical contributions, she is a national leading voice for advocating diversity in STEM and AI. She is a co-founder of Stanford’s renowned SAILORS outreach program for high school girls and the national non-profit AI4ALL. For her work in AI, Dr. Li has been a keynote speaker at the Grace Hopper Conference in 2017 and TED2015 main conference. She is a recipient of the 2017 Athena Academic Leadership Award, IAPR 2016 J.K. Aggarwal Prize, the 2016 NVIDIA Pioneer in AI Award, 2014 IBM Faculty Fellow Award, 2011 Alfred Sloan Faculty Award, 2012 Yahoo Labs FREP award, 2009 NSF CAREER award, the 2006 Microsoft Research New Faculty Fellowship, and a number of Google Research awards. Work from Dr. Li’s lab have been featured in a variety of popular press magazines and newspapers including New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Fortune Magazine, Science, Wired Magazine, MIT Technology Review, Financial Times, and more. She was selected as a 2017 Women in Tech by the ELLE Magazine, a 2017 Awesome Women Award by Good Housekeeping, a Global Thinker of 2015 by Foreign Policy, and one of the “Great Immigrants: The Pride of America” in 2016 by the Carnegie Foundation (past winners include Albert Einstein, Yo-Yo Ma, Sergey Brin and more). #TuringSeminars
