How to Become a Product Manager

01:27
Last week we talked about the different career paths you could explore after graduating a bootcamp, and I promised I was going to detail each of them. Today, I am going to talk about becoming a Product Manager. So what is a product manager and what do they do? Well, product managers are considered by some to be the product CEO. As a product manager, your job is to make sure the product the right product is shipped to the right customers at the right time. Sound simple? Well, it’s a bit more complicated than that because it blends elements of UX, Engineering and Business to make sure everything is in sync. How do they do it? Well they use a set of metrics and frameworks to analyze how customers interact with a product. In other words, what does the user journey look like as they pass through the product funnel? It’s a truly cross-functional position and one that can be a ton of fun. Are you interested in becoming a product manager? Well you ask yourself the following questions first: Do you have management experience? Do you have a good understanding of engineering requirements and principles? Do you understand user experience and customer journeys? Are you able to quickly understand and prioritize aspects of a business? If you’re nodding your head along at all these things then this might be right up your alley and I’d definitely encourage you to explore it further. And if you’re interested in learning more or have something to add please feel free to drop me a line in the comments.

Key points: 1) Growth isn't just important for consumer facing software companies - it should be something that every technology company is thinking about from an engagement and revenue perspective. 2) Growth can range from sales channel optimization (both self-serve and enabling reps), marketing campaigns, building experiences for customers to demo your product, onboarding, matching users with the correct tools to get the most value from your company etc. 3) Experiment! Fail fast. Part of finding the best growth strategy is to try things out and A/B test experiences to see what is driving your core metrics. Before Box, Reyana has managed products at a variety of startups including mobile games, karaoke apps and human resource solutions. Being a Product Manager means that you rely on the executives and management to support your efforts. Whether it is funding for resources, support for marketing or sales for your product or one of dozens of other things, without management on your side your product may be destined for failure. Sometimes executives are compensated and/or have personal goals that are in direct conflict with what you are trying to achieve. Sometimes they come from other disciplines, such as engineering or sales, and they aren’t able to grasp the long-term strategic implications of not supporting your efforts. And sometimes Product Management doesn’t get the respect or support it needs because the executive staff simply doesn’t understand what great Product Management is and why it is important. This video covers five proven techniques for helping you as a Product Manager get your executives and management on board and supporting your product and what you ask for. Five strategies for garnering executive and management support: 1. Speak “Executive-Ease” 2. Be brief and hard-hitting 3. Tell them WIIFM 4. Speak in terms of ROI and incremental gains 5. Can You Succeed As A Product Manager As An Introvert?

14:00
Can You Succeed As A Product Manager As An Introvert? Online 'No BS' course to learn to beat shyness and social anxiety from home. None of the 'just get out there' rubbish: http://sociallives.party/ Answers from: Geoffrey Anderson Elynn Lee Ben Alexander Rich Mironov Elynn Lee Vladimir Novakovski Linda Gorchels Greg Prickril Yes. It isnt easy, but it can be done. I am a classic introvert. Group interactions and dynamics are very tiring for me, and traditional networking is awful, but I am by many measures successful at it. I work really hard at the person to person interaction, I am conscious that I have to put on a face and deal with it. It is part of the job. However, there are some parts of being a product manager where it is a benefit. Customer visits, voice of the customer, and validation discussions where some silence on my part helps elicit the most valuable responses from the people I meet with. Huge win, and something that extroverts have to work hard to be able to do (they seem to thrive to fill the gaps in the conversation, and to dominate the discussion). In building team dynamics, being an introvert is not as difficult. I build relationships, have idle banter, talk sports if needed, and of course lead/drive discussions around the roadmap, prioritization, managing up and down, and in general being seen as a leader in the organization. It is weird, because I truly believe I am awful at this, being my own worst critic, but feedback from peers, other groups, and even people who rarely interact with me is that I am amazingly good at this. Whod of thunk it. But, it comes at a price. I stress a lot before large presentations (I get the jitters and nerves bad, but as soon as I take the stage, I am fine), and after events with lots of glad-handing and ad-hoc personal interactions, I am truly wiped out. Like crawl between the covers, and sleep for 16 hours wiped out. My wife is the exact opposite, and she finally has learned how to cope with being married to a capital I introvert.
