Once again in this video you'll see big waves hitting the ships in storms on the sea and ocean with occasianal hurricane force winds blowing over the deck bringing sea water with it. It really is amazing to see how the captains are able to control the ship in these incredibly scary situations in rough seas with such big monster waves. What would you do if you were in the middle of an ocean and a hurricane hit your ship?

SIGN UP FOR EARLY ACCESS HERE: http://findingparadise.ca After an epic few months hanging out in New Zealand it was time to Go! There was a definite chill in the air. The bilges were full of provisions and we were finally ready. Leaving port and going offshore is a decision we don't take lightly. One that includes pouring over weather forecasts in the weeks preceding our departure. Analyzing wave heights, swell period, wind and gust maps. Planning for alternate routes and ports. There's a lot that goes into it. A lot of practice. Perhaps we were a bit out of practice having summered in New Zealand? The passage from New Zealand to Fiji is one that includes a point of no return. A point where the only thing you can do is turn more downwind. And that is what we did. Our initial course had us stopping over in a place called Minerva Reef. After three days of bashing into waves with no end in sight and sailing angles that were getting tighter and tighter we pulled the trigger to skip beautiful Minerva reef. So hopefully this video gives you an idea of how wet and wild it can get out here. Yes, it's not super comfy but it can still be fun in it's own wierd, quirky way. Not to mention, it makes that first beer in that calm anchorage even sweeter! Woot! we're back in the tropics!!! Extreme storm - Omens Tell Tales with ships as monster storm explodes in early winter storm. West Coast shuts down with Columbia River Bar and California as Storms the freaks of nature show their power. Mature storms are the most powerful events on the planet. In one day unleashing the equivalent force of the world's nuclear arsenals. Given time these loose canons on the ocean's deck give quarter to no vessel. These sea battles never decide who's right only who's left. As sailors in little boats the size of life boats. We don't have the luxury of hiding 100' up in comfy enclosed watertight wheelhouses. Or lounges on 1,000' ships manned 24/7 on all decks. We are literally part of the storm itself. Seemingly lost in between swells dealing with the waves and ripples there. We are in the trenches battling a monster that never sees us. Even when we have crew it's most always a solo operation. How we strategically navigate prior to the monster's arrival. Then keep on thru the dark night wrestling the beast will determine just how soon and if we live to see another day. How do we get here? Over the years we get a little dinghy and go for a stroll in the Pacific Ocean. The Columbia River bar reopens after being closed to an early winter storm. At most I have a 3 day window to voyage South clearing the rugged stormy terrain of the Pacific Northwest. That's impossible. My first vessel, MV Ore Vitoria sailing through the Indian Ocean. This does not really look rough, but we faced heavy wind constantly from the starboard side of up to 45 kts (83 kmph) and gusts up to 60 kts (111 kmph) on that day (25th December, 2014). Notice the vessel roll smoothly (1.16 - 1.27), this is the advantage of working on a bulk carrier as the you are not easily sea sick working on a monster of this size.

Sailing solo as storm explodes early October winter storm. That shuts the West Coast down but far offshore it's not so bad except for the rough stormy seas that require a little humor. Solo sailing safely into a storm requires a wealth of wisdom regarding these monsters that run wild on the ocean. Learn and enjoy a unique experience. A mature storm is the most powerful event on this planet. Unleashing each day the equivalent of the nuclear arsenals of the US and Russia. If the energy could be harnessed during this storm's duration all the electric power needs of humanity would be met for six months. These monsters are birthed by a slight kink disturbance in the winds and barometric pressure below excited by the jet stream above. To a navigator North of the Equator we first see an "ill wind" as it backs counterclockwise across the compass. It's the first distant touch of a low pressure system going into a cyclonic spin hundreds or thousands of miles away. The mackerel sky the night prior along with the snowy white owl's visit tell the tale. The weather forecaster's storm track projections are wrong. The monster is not going to Canada it is running South to me down the West Coast to California. The "Mare's Tails" called a mackerel sky or fish scales per folklore "Makes a lofty or tall ship carry low sails or reef such in." The high cirrocumulus clouds formed by shifting wind directions and high speed winds are the tell tales of an approaching storm system. Understanding a storm is to begin to know the winds and seas of the planet. This is the breath of life. Wave heights trail wind speeds. It can take up to 3 days for storm waves to fully develop. That's the good news. The amount of wave energy rises exponentially to the 4th power. Seas from 40 knot winds are 17x more violent than 20 knot winds. I'm new to cyber space as I emerge off grid. I had no intention of creating videos initially. But I realized I needed to tell my story, share enchanting encounters with marine critters, people, isles and the ocean herself with a wealth of incredible information and inspiration not known like an uncharted island. That when known will bless, inspire and bring about conscious positive out of the box change. To make my videos thus far I pack my stuff into a Pelican case, kayak to shore often with dolphins by day and sharks by night. Starbucks is my office and my vessel is the staging grounds. Imagine what will be with upgraded gear, having some crew onboard and guests that gives some semblance of respect to the incredible beauty, sounds and adventures that await! https://www.patreon.com/oceanmaverick https://www.facebook.com/jehu.wood https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRCGVSyEhjQP5WWWF-8T25g Thanks Mate, Captain Jehoo (like Yo Hoo) episode 1 Lost to Discover → https://youtu.be/KhgCexeXQYs episode 2 Liquid Life → https://youtu.be/xV4j_FLpoXQ episode 3 Fish On → https://youtu.be/tHZf62rG7Dw episode 4 Metamorphosis→ https://youtu.be/Nd8kb4zRwzQ episode 5 Off Grid Bliss→ https://youtu.be/mD8lQxg2S_0 episode 6 The Monster Low→ https://youtu.be/79r98ESzLII episode 7 Soul Sailor→ https://youtu.be/RGGRTq0BwD8 by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Hit the Streets (Version 2) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100882 Cool Hard Facts - Exhilarate Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100280 At The Shore - The Dark Contenent Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100770

Finally a new video. We are back and in action after a minor boat refit down here in New Zealand. In this epic video as we check out of Tonga and hit the high seas for our much anticipated passage to New Zealand. We had a hilarious run-around just trying to check out of Tonga. But we finally nailed it and were happily let out of the country! The weather window was short with ever increasing winds and waves. We needed to get going ASAP. With a short stay at Minerva and a bucket list item checked off, when we took a left turn out of the atoll and pointed our bow towards New Zealand. The weather allowed for a rum line passage with a northeaster pushing us the whole way. A short passage for us but what can be, and has been for many, an arduous multi week slog. And wow what a weather window it was… QUICK WET BOUNCY AND FAST. Ahem well yeah your mind could go to the gutter with that description, but we broke records on our speedy little Nahoa. 200 nautical miles in one day. An average over 8 knots and did I mention the crazy most uncomfortable motion and loud creaky banging passage ever? Although it was awful, cold, uncomfortable we finally made it into the Bay of islands on a dark blustery day. Tied up to the quarantine dock we popped the champagne and had a blissful night in the calm waters of the Marina. And believe it or not, they let us in the country! (with only minor confiscations of seeds and bear spray) Customs welcomed with warm arms! What a day. What a week. With the bikinis put away we bundle up in the nights. Thankfully we didn’t toss that down duvet we thought we’d never ever need again. Stay tuned as we freeze our bottoms around the northern tip of New Zealand! Sailing in 35 to 45 knots under storm jib and Tri Sail, squally but relatively comfortable. Still doing 6-7 knots boat speed through the water, with 45-50 degrees relative wind angle achieved when traveling above six knots. A good choice of sails to achieve the desired destination at noon. On other occasions when the wind is constantly over 50 knots the storm jib is lowered and the vessel sailed with a course over the ground of about 70-80 degrees off the wind. Without the aid of an engine, a prudent seaman will be navigating with options to leeward. In winds over 50 knots, there is too much spray in the air to keep the camera lens clear of spray, everything is constantly wet. This is sail training at it's best. 60% of the eight-person crew had never sailed before, 100% enjoyed the experience.
