Black gold - Pepper being sold in India's ancient spice market!

01:01
Khari Baoli is a street in Old Delhi, India known for its wholesale grocery and Asia's largest wholesale spice market selling all kinds of spices, nuts ,herbs and food products like rice and tea. Operating since the 17th century, the market is situated near the historic Delhi Red Fort, on the Khari Baoli Road adjacent to Fatehpuri Masjid at the western end of the Chandni Chowk, and over the years has remained a tourist attraction, especially those in the heritage circuit of Old Delhi. Pepper has been used as a spice in India since it was introduced by South East Asia people in prehistory. Pepper is native to South East Asia and has been known to Indian cooking since at least 2 BCE. J. Innes Miller notes that pepper was grown in southern Thailand and in Malaysia. Peppercorns were a much-prized trade good, often referred to as "black gold" and used as a form of commodity money. On the other hand, the term "peppercorn rent" refers to a token payment made for something that is in fact being given. The ancient history of black pepper is often interlinked with (and confused with) that of long pepper, the dried fruit of closely related Piper longum. The Romans knew of both and often referred to either as just "piper". In fact, it was not until the discovery of the New World and of chili peppers that the popularity of long pepper entirely declined. Chile peppers, some of which when dried are similar in shape and taste to long pepper, were easier to grow in a variety of locations more convenient to Europe. After the English, virtually all of the black pepper found in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa was traded from Malabar region. Before the 16th century, pepper was being grown in Java, Sunda, Sumatra, Madagascar, Malaysia, and everywhere in Southeast Asia, these areas traded mainly with China, or used the pepper locally. Ports in the Malabar area also served as a stop-off point for much of the trade in other spices from farther east in the Indian Ocean. Black pepper, along with other spices from Southeast Asia and lands farther east, changed the course of world history. It was in some part the preciousness of these spices that led to the Portuguese efforts to find a sea route to China during the age of discovery and consequently to the Portuguese colonial occupation of that country, as well as the European discovery and colonisation of the Americas. Cordyceps sinensis - the magical caterpillar-fungus that everyone seeks from the Himalaya!

03:57
Himalayan Gold – the mystery of Cordyceps sinensis It's that time of year once more when the high altitude alpine meadows of the Himalaya get into spring-summer melt mode and the Yarsagumba starts emerging! The fungus cordyceps (or Cordyceps sinensis) has been known as an effective tonic and aphrodisiac in traditional Chinese medicine and is increasingly used in China as a popular dietary supplement and medicine. Caterpillar fungus and Winter Worm - Summer Grass and keera ghas - these are the common names used for the highly prized Chinese tonic herb Cordyceps which gained international publicity in mainstream publications a few years back because of its use by Chinese women athletes breaking world Olympic running records. In ancient China, this fungus was used exclusively in the Emperor's Palace because of its scarcity. Cordyceps is also renowned within other international markets, and is available in several countries around the world where it is sold in different forms. The meadows of the Western Himalaya are the spring-summer hunting grounds of Himalayan villagers who come here in search of the elusive Cordyceps sinenesis - a fungus that grows out of a moth caterpillar which is collected here and sold in China and elsewhere at a very high cost, as a performance enhancing and rejuvenating medicine. In India, Cordyceps - locally called "Keera ghas" is a main source of income for highlanders. It grows at an altitude of 3,900 – 5,400 m above sea level during the months of May through to July. Many villagers across the western Himalaya — young and old, men and women — walk every spring-summer day along the steep paths that lead to the collecting areas. The collectors lie on the ground over the high-altitude expanses, attentively scanning the terrain. The task is difficult; requiring concentration and patience, as the fungus is so small that it cannot be easily seen amongst the dwarf Rhododendron shrubs and various alpine meadow vegetation. But villagers generally like to perform this work since it is not very difficult compared to their daily farm work, the enterprise highly profitable, and because they like spending time together in the mountains with other villagers. The collectors proceed slowly on hands and knees carefully scanning the area in front of them, keeping their faces close to the ground. The Cordyceps is carefully extracted from the soil with ones’ hand with small sticks. Some collectors say that they may even find 10 to 20 worms a day depending on their luck. At the end of the day, they come back to their high-altitude meadow abutting camps and clean the Cordyceps with a toothbrush and then store it by their camp fires, to dry. The caterpillar fungus is worth over 10 million US dollars a ton in Asian wholesale markets. It is like gold for these collectors. What a strange world we live in where a repulsive looking fungus growing out of the moribund dead body of a caterpillar can be worth tens of millions of US dollars, with the dream of enhancing one’s performance or quality of life! Fly to the 'Island of Gold': Andaman & Nicobar islands

00:36
As seen from a helicopter, incredible cloud shapes dot the sky and a huge green island can be see in the brilliant blue sea. Andamans holds many surprises for the traveller in its beautiful rainforests and virgin beaches. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands were shrouded in mystery for centuries because of their inaccessibility. These are the paragon of beauty and present a landscape full with scenic and picturesque extravaganza. These islands shimmer like emeralds in the Bay of Bengal. The dense forest which cover these islands and the innumerable exotic flowers and birds create a highly poetic and romantic atmosphere. "Here the white beaches on the edge of a meandering coastline have palm trees that sway to the rhythm of the Sea. The beat of tribal drums haunt the stillness and technicolour fish steer their way through crystal clear water." This addition of strangeness to beauty which is responsible for creating the infinite romantic impact may be described in the following famous lines of Keats. The Andaman islands have been inhabited for several thousand years, at the very least. The earliest archaeological evidence yet documented goes back some 2,200 years; however, the indications from genetic, cultural and isolation studies suggests that it may have been in the Middle Paleolithic. The indigenous Andamanese people appear to have lived on the islands in substantial isolation from that time until the 18th century CE. Geeta Phogat gets gold, wins Women's 55 kg freestyle wrestling bout!

01:09
Geeta Phogat is a freestyle wrestler who won India's first ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2010. She is also the first Indian female wrestler to have qualified for the Olympic Summer Games. She comes from Balali village in Bhiwani district, Haryana. Her father Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler himself and a Dronacharya Award recipient, is also her coach. Her sister Babita Kumari and her cousin Vinesh Phogat are also Commonwealth Games gold medalists. Both won Gold medals in their respective categories in 2014 edition of Commonwealth Games. Another younger sister of Geeta Phogat, Ritu Phogat, too is an international level wrestler and has won a gold medal at the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. She got married to wrestler Pawan Kumar on 20 November 2016. Her youngest sister, Sangita Phogat is also a wrestler. She is also the first-ever Indian woman wrestler to have qualified for the Olympics. The 2010 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XIX Commonwealth Games, were held in Delhi, India, from 3 to 14 October 2010. A total of 6,081 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and dependencies competed in 21 sports and 272 events, making it the largest Commonwealth Games to date. It was also the largest international multi-sport event to be staged in Delhi and India, eclipsing the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The opening and closing ceremonies were held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main stadium of the event. It was the first time that the Commonwealth Games were held in India and the second time it was held in Asia after Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1998. This also marked the first time a Commonwealth Republic hosted the games. The official mascot of the Games was Shera and the official song of the Games, "Jiyo Utho Bado Jeeto", was composed by celebrated Indian musician A.R. Rahman. Preparation for the Games received widespread international media attention, with criticism being levelled against the organisers for the slow pace of work, as well as issues related to security and hygiene. However, all member nations of the Commonwealth of Nations participated in the event, except Fiji, which is suspended from the Commonwealth, and Tokelau, which didn't send a team, in spite of threats of boycotts and athlete withdrawals. The internationally acclaimed opening ceremony improved the image of the Games, and dispelled negative notions surrounding them, with many observers remarking that they began on an apprehensive note, but were an exceptional experience with a largely positive ending. The President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, said that India had made a good foundation for a future Olympics bid, which was reiterated by the Australian Ministry of Sports. Commonwealth games Federation chief Mike Fennell stated that "Delhi delivered a fantastic Games". Some observers accused sections of the media of bias, unfair expectations, and negative reporting. The final medal tally was led by Australia. The host nation India achieved its best performance ever at the Games, finishing second overall. The holy temple of Lord Shiva, in the Arabian Sea?

01:04
At Koliyak, a village at the Bhavnagar district in the Gujarat state of India, people reach out to the Shiva temple about 1.5 kilometers into the sea. In this historic place, Pandavas, the heroic brothers worshipped the lingas that are symbolic of Lord Shiva after the fierce battle in which they killed their evil cousins as narrated in the epic Mahabharat. Think of a temple in the weirdest of places. Under the sea. But then, the Hindus have built their temples over the hills and mountains, inside the caves, at the sea shore, near the water falls...where ever nature reveals itself in all its grandeur and pristine beauty. The temple I am talking about is Nishkalank Mahadev's temple (Nishkalank -- blemish-less or sinless; Mahadev -- Lord Shiva), and it is under water during high tides in the sea and emerges during low tides to reveal itself majestically, promising its devotees to wash away all sins. As it did for the Pandavas in the epic Mahabharata, when they wanted to atone for the sin of killing their brethren, even though they were all evil incarnated. The temple is located in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat state in India. From the beach along the Arabian Sea, you'd have to traverse 1.5 km into the interior. There are the five Shiva lingas that the five Pandava brothers worshipped, along with Shiva's vehicle Nandi, or the Bull. Many people come here to dissolve ashes of their departed kith and kin. The day after the New Moon day, the sea recedes to the maximum, and hundreds of people including children walk the distance and worship the idols. The New Moon day that comes in August and corresponds to the Hindu calendar month of Bhadra is of special importance, and people throng here in large numbers. Bangle making in Jaipur, Rajasthan

04:50
The making of colourful lac bangles, over the heat of burning coal. The lacquer used for making bangles is natural lac which is coloured using coloured lac by heating it. Melted coloured lac is rubbed over normal lac until it absorbs the color. The lac is pressed and stuck on the brass metal bangles. Lac bangles of Jaipur are very popular. The lac used for making bangles is natural lac which is coloured using coloured lac by heating it. Normal lac is stuck/pasted thickly on a wooden rod and rolled over a flat surface to make it into a cylindrical shape. This lac is then heated slowly over the coal burner. The heated lac is continuously pressed and rolled over the flat iron plate with the help of wooden tool. The coloured lac is heated simultaneously and then applied evenly by rubbing it on the lac. Once the colour has been applied to the lac base it is again shaped into a thin coil and cut off from the plain lac rod. The width of the bangle varies as per the design incorporated on the bangle. Brass or steel is used as base for the lac. The metals are first converted in the shape of the bangles and the thin lac coil is rolled on the brass or steel base. For a thin lac bangle 3 thin brass bangles are kept together and on that lac coil is rolled, incase of steel base, the base thickness is made according to the required width of the bangle. The thickness and the length of the coil approximately depend on the final shape and size of the bangles. The semi-finished bangle is slipped into a round wooden beam with a tapering end for adjusting to the proper shape. The bangles are kept aside for drying. The bangles are normally embellished with pearls, semi-precious stones, mirrors, beads etc. For applying the stones, they are heated over a tin plate kept on a small burner. The base of the stones gets heated and easily melts the lac surface on which they are placed and stick there after cooling. They are picked up one at a time and stuck on the bangle. The process requires great precision. The women members of the artisan’s family do the embellishments. Organic agriculture with marigold fungicide in India

01:10
Marigold petals being used in organic agriculture, as a local fungicide in India's Karnataka state. Karnataka is a state in South West India. It was created on 1 November 1956, with the passage of the States Reorganisation Act, which is celebrated annually as Karnataka Rajyotsava (English: Formation Day). Originally known as the State of Mysore, it was renamed Karnataka in 1973. It is the land of the Kannadigas, Tuluvas, Konkanis and Kodavas. The capital and largest city is Bangalore, also known as Bengaluru, which is at the forefront of the rapid economic and technological development that India is experiencing. Karnataka is bordered by the Arabian Sea and the Laccadive Sea to the west, Goa to the north west, Maharashtra to the north, Andhra Pradesh to the east, Tamil Nadu to the south east, and Kerala to the south west. The state covers an area of 191,976 square kilometres (74,122 sq mi), or 5.83 per cent of the total geographical area of India. It is the eighth largest Indian state by area. With 61,130,704 inhabitants at the 2011 census, Karnataka is the ninth largest state by population, comprising 30 districts. Kannada is the most widely spoken and official language of the state. The two main river systems of the state are the Krishna and its tributaries, the Bhima, Ghataprabha, Vedavathi, Malaprabha, and Tungabhadra, in the north, and the Kaveri and its tributaries, the Hemavati, Shimsha, Arkavati, Lakshmana Thirtha and Kabini, in the south. Both these rivers flow eastward into the Bay of Bengal. Though several etymologies have been suggested for the name Karnataka, the generally accepted one is that Karnataka is derived from the Kannada words karu and nādu, meaning "elevated land". Karu nadu may also be read as karu, meaning "black", and nadu, meaning "region", as a reference to the black cotton soil found in the Bayalu Seeme region of the state. The British used the word Carnatic, sometimes Karnatak, to describe both sides of peninsular India, south of the Krishna. With an antiquity that dates to the paleolithic, Karnataka has also been home to some of the most powerful empires of ancient and medieval India. The philosophers and musical bards patronised by these empires launched socio-religious and literary movements which have endured to the present day. Karnataka has contributed significantly to both forms of Indian classical music, the Carnatic and Hindustani traditions. Writers in the Kannada language have received the most number of Jnanpith awards in India. Amitabh Bachchan says "Ladies and gentlemen, it's been a great honour to work on this project. This is it is really a presentation of the music and I am sure there are a few more clips to follow." Son of well known poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. He was successful in being cast in Saat Hindustani. He got his break in Bollywood after a letter of introduction from the then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, as he was a friend of her son, Rajiv Gandhi. This is how Amitabh made an entry in Bollywood, starting with Zanjeer, co-starred with his future wife Jaya Bhaduri, and since then there has been no looking back. He did bounce back, presenting the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire called Kaun Banega Crorepati? (2000). After a series of hits with Mohabbatein (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001) and Baghban (2003) and Khakee (2004), this elderly Bachchan is showing no signs of slowing down and proving the critics wrong once again. Our Thoughts on Going Bare (MJ Sailing - EP 24)

20:17
'Why aren't you going to paint your hull?' 'If you're going to leave it bare, you should at least shine it up'. 'You're in for a ton of corrosion if you leave your hull bare'. These are just a sample of the questions and comments we've been getting through our last few videos, so we thought it was time to publicly address the issue. Our hull is staying bare aluminum, and we *want* it that way. Keep reading as to our reasons why, and to answer all the questions you may have about why there is no longer paint on the side of our boat. In this episode we also dig our mainsail out of storage to see how it fits on the boat, and Matt goes over our plans for how we're going to lay out our deck hardware. With all the changes we've made to Elements, the previous set-up is no longer going to work for us. Cheers from the WATER!! Thank you SO MUCH to our Patrons. One of the greatest Hindu scholars of Vaishnava VisishtAdvaita philosophy, Ramanuja is believed to have resided in this temple. The temple along with Ekambareswarar Temple and Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kanchipuram is called Mumurtivasam or abode of trio. While Srirangam is referred to as 'The Koil' and Tirupathi as the 'Malai' among Divya Desams, Kanchipuram Varadaraja Perumal temple is known as the 'Perumal Koil'. This is one of the most sacred places for Vaishnavites. The Temple is a huge one on a 23-acre complex and shows the architectural skills of ancient Vishwakarma Sthapathis in temple architecture and is famous for its holiness and ancient history. The temple has 3 outer precincts or prakaram namely Azhwar Prakaram, Madai Palli Prakaram and Thiru Malai Prakaram. There are 32 shrines, 19 vimanams, 389 pillared halls and sacred sacred tanks some located outside the complex. The main sanctum faces west and can be entered through a 130 feet tall, 7-tiered rajagopuram or main gateway tower. The eastern gopuram is taller than the western gopuram, which is contrasting to large temples where the rajagopuram is the tallest one. One of the most famous architectural pieces in the temple is the huge stone chain sculpted in a single stone. There is a 100 pillared hall and has sculptures depicting Ramayana and Mahabarathastands the masterpiece of Vijayanagara architecture. The significant things about the temple are the shrine of Varadarajaswamy, beautiful carved lizards and platted with gold, over the sanctum. The vimana over the sanctum of Vradaraja Swami is called Punyakoti Vimanam and the one over Perundevi Thayar shrine is called Kalyana Koti Vimanam. Apart from the main stone idol, the temple has the wooden image of Varadarajaswamy preserved within a silver box in water pumped out every 40 years. There is a shrine of Narasimha on the hillock. Kanchipuram or Kanchi is a temple city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It served as the Capital city of the Pallava Kingdom. It is also known by its former names Kanchiampathi, Conjeevaram, and the nickname "The City of Thousand Temples". It is now the Administrative headquarters of Kanchipuram district. Kanchipuram is located 72 kilometers from Chennai, the capital city of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is considered one of the seven holiest cities to the Hindus of India. In Hinduism, a kṣetra is a sacred ground, a field of active power, a place where moksha, final release can be obtained. The Garuda Purana enumerates seven cities as providers of moksha, namely Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Varanasi, Avantikā, Dvārakā and Kanchipuram. Kanchipuram was the capital of the Pallavas rulers from the 1st to 9th centuries. It was also important during the Chola, Vijayanagar, and Nayaka periods. It was mentioned in the Mahabhasya, written by Patanjali in the 2nd century BC. The term "nagareshu Kanchi" in the above verse attributed the famous Sanskrit poet, Kalidasa, means that Kanchi was the best amongst the cities of medieval India. Kanchipuram is one of the oldest cities in South India, and was a city of learning for Tamil, Sanskrit, and Pali. It was during the reign of Pallava dynasty, from the 4th to the 9th centuries that Kanchipuram attained its limelight. The city served as the Pallava capital, and many of the known temples were built during their reign.
