The fabricated myth of the invisible hand

However, the battle is not about the pursuit of truth or adherence to scientific methods, but about ideology. Nowhere is this more visible than in our perception of the invisible hand, the most famous idea in economics. The common belief about the invisible hand is that individuals are attempting to maximise their well being, and by doing so will further the interests of society without intending it. The argument essentially is that individual and selfish greed will automatically lead to a harmonious society just as if every individual was guided by an invisible hand. Until today this idea is a pillar in the belief that free markets are inherently efficient if everyone could follow his selfish desires and that government intervention of any kind would inevitably cause damage. This idea also made Adam Smith famous, who today is almost exclusively remembered for being the discoverer of the invisible hand and a champion of free markets. However, everything we know about the invisible hand is wrong. Selfish behaviour by everyone neither leads to a harmonious society nor to an efficient economy, and Adam Smith never argued that way. In fact, he frequently argued that selfish actions by certain individuals were harmful to society as a whole. The invisible hand is nothing but a fabricated myth and the picture we cherish of Adam Smith is an ideological construct. The fundamental problem is that Adam Smith never defined the idea. Our knowledge of the invisible hand is therefore an interpretation of how Smith used the phrase. This leads to another problem: In all of his writing the invisible hand only appears 3 times. The first appearance of the metaphor was in a paper regarding the history of science in which Smith argued that the ancient greeks were superstitious because they believed that the invisible hand of god, and not the laws of physics, was responsible for the natural events. In the second appearance of the invisible hand Smith argued that medieval landlords were obliged to share parts of their wealth with their servants to prevent them from starving. Thereby landlords would further the good of society without their intention or their knowledge. While this usage of the invisible hand is somewhat close to the modern definition it is still distinctly different: Smith never argued that the feudal society was harmonious or efficient. He actually thought this society was wasteful and oppressive. Smith also did not argue that this invisible hand was a universal principle. He explicitly stated that the landlords were obliged to share their wealth to keep their servants alive; if the landlords had machinery like later industrialists, they would have left their servants starving. The final appearance of the invisible hand was in the context of national security. Smith warned that if a society was outsourcing too much of its production for higher profits national security would be threatened. However, Smith also expected merchants and industrialists to favour their home markets because they knew local laws and customs and would also prefer the reduced uncertainty of trading in close proximity. Due to this preference the merchants would further the interests of society without knowing or intending it. There is hardly a connecting theme among the three appearances of the invisible hand. Especially the emergence of the common good or efficient markets from individual greed as a universal principle is missing. And the problems do not end there: Smith actually argued against the modern interpretation of the invisible hand. At his time, the merchants were the economic elites and Smith regarded their selfish actions as harmful to society. He argued that they would conspire to extract wealth from the rest of society and that their interests in parliament were as powerful as a standing army. And even more generally Adam Smith was never a champion of free markets. He preferred them on grounds of efficiency, but was not unconditionally in favour of free markets or free trade. He condemned British trade policies in India, America and Ireland. He argued that specialisation of labour pushed too far would debase humans into ignorance and stupidity. In fact, the real Adam Smith was even accused of confusing the wealth of the nation with the happiness of the poorest. The real Adam Smith differs entirely from the modern Adam Smith and that is because the modern Adam Smith was created by isolating and distorting the ideas of the real one. ... This course provides the education and training necessary to simplify denture fabrication by utilizing CAD CAM technology to design and deliver esthetically pleasing, and well-functioning dentures in two appointments. A thorough exploration of classic denture fabrication processes will assist dentists in moving to digital technologies that provide greater efficiencies and enhance the quality of dentures. This course will review classic principles of removable prosthesis fabrication that are critical to the successful fabrication of dentures, and apply these principles to digital technologies. Participants will then be coached to digitally fabricate dentures in two patient appointments. This course is presented in a blended learning format, incorporating both lectures format and hands-on workshops that provide over-the-shoulder coaching during live patient care. The entire course will be given over four days, spanning over three weekends. During the first weekend, participants will review procedures on making final impressions and jaw relation record keeping that includes taking records to fabricate the dentures for their individual patients. Immediately afterward, these records will be sent to for denture fabrication. During the second weekend, participants will review the principles of tooth setup, explore digital previews of the dentures that were sent to be fabricated, and determine whether the dentures should be approved for fabrication. During the third weekend participants will review procedures for denture delivery, and deliver digitally fabricated dentures to patients.

From planning to the execution of a case, all of the necessary steps, a few optional approaches and many practice tips are provided to help practitioners use temporaries more effectively in order to achieve desired clinical results. Beginning with a brief understanding of laboratory-fabricated temporaries, the basics of fitting and cementing them serve as a backdrop for a productive discussion of many practice techniques (e.g., a review of the Reverse Preparation Technique or use of a clear suck-down splint to achieve enough reduction, removing old restorations, bonding a buildup in place for uniform thickness, temporary reline material, restoring and capturing a new bite relationship, and a demonstration of useful instruments). Also shown is how to use temporaries to create an ideal pontic receptor site, achieve desired tissue levels and promote gingival healing.

It is one of the most famous styles in wushu. It is known for being economical, direct and efficient.[1] The history of Wing Chun has been passed from teacher to student verbally rather than through documentation, making it difficult to confirm or clarify the differing accounts of Wing Chun's creation. Some have sought to apply the methods of higher criticism to the oral histories of Wing Chun and other Chinese martial arts.[1] Others have attempted to discern the origins of Wing Chun by determining the specific purpose of its techniques. The oral history of the Yip Man branch of Wing Chun, corresponding with modern research is as follows: After escaping the destruction of the Fujian Shaolin Monastery by Qing forces (circa 1730) , the Abbess Ng Mui fled to the distant Daliang mountains on the border between Yunnan and Sichuan. There, Ng Mui often bought her bean curd at the tofu shop of Yim Yee (嚴二). Yim Yee had a daughter named Yim Wing Chun (嚴詠春) whom a local warlord was trying to force into marriage. Ng Mui taught Yim Wing Chun a summarized version of her Southern Shaolin Kung Fu, which allowed Yim Wing Chun to fend off the warlord once and for all. After completing her training under Ng Mui (circa 1790), Yim Wing Chun eventually married Leung Bok-Chao (梁博儔), to whom she taught the fighting techniques that Ng Mui had passed on to her. After Yim Wing Chun died (circa 1840), Her husband Leung Bok-Chao passed the new style on to Leung Lan Kwai (circa 1840). Leung Lan Kwai taught six members of the Red Boat Opera Group (circa 1850). All Wing Chun today descends from one of these six Opera Group members:

What is VCSEL Laser (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser)?

VCSEL emits light in a cylindrical beam vertically from the surface of a fabricated wafer, and offers significant advantages when compared to the conventional edge-emitting lasers currently used in the majority of fiber optic communications devices. Now let's take a comparison between conventional edge emitting laser and VCSEL laser. The left picture shows a conventional edge emitting laser. The right picture shows a VCSEL laser. Conventional edge emitting laser has some disadvantages. The light beam usually has a high divergence angle and difficult to couple into optical fiber without a corrective lens. Also it requires higher electrical threshold current to operate. VCSEL lasers have many advantages. It has a circular light beam which is very easy for coupling into optical fibers. It also consumes less power. Since it emits from the surface, this structure can be integrated in two-dimensional array configuration. Now let's see how VCSEL lasers work. A VCSEL laser is typically composed of several layers. The top layer is the electrical contact for current injection. The next layer is the high reflectively top mirror, which has a 99% reflectivity. This layer is made of DBR, which stands for Distributed Bragg Reflector. Then the next layer is an oxide layer, which constructs a light emitting window, so the light beam can be optimized into a circular beam. The center layer is the laser cavity, it is usually a multiple quantum well layer. This is the active gain region where lasing actually happens. We will talk about Quantum Well in the next slide. Then another oxide layer to confine the light. Last is the bottom DBR layer, the bottom mirror, which has 99.9% reflectivity. Notice this reflectivity is much higher than the top mirror, so that lasing light will get out from the top mirror instead of the bottom. The right picture shows how the lasing really happens. The Quantum Wells generate photons which get bounced back and force between the top DBR mirror and the bottom DBR mirror. This is a typical lasing mechanism as in all lasers. The active region in a VCSEL laser is usually a quantum well structure. This slide shows the basic structure of a single quantum well. This structure can be repeated several times to construct a multiple quantum well. A quantum well structure is made of three layers, the two Aluminum Gallium Arsenide layers are thick, and in between is a very thin Gallium Arsenide layer. In fact, the central Gallium Arsenide layer is so thin, that electrons can not move freely in the vertical Z direction, but only in the XY plane. This is called Quantum Confinement. The quantum confinement effect increases the lasing efficiency, which is a big advantage over conventional Double Heterostructure lasers. The Aluminum Gallium Arsenide layers have a wider energy band gap as shown in the right picture, the Gallium Arsenide layer has a narrower energy band gap. This is called a potential well, where the Quantum Well name comes from. The theory of how quantum well works is much complicated, we cannot cover it here in a short video. But you can research this by yourself in order to fully understand quantum well lasers. VCSELs have high performance and low cost advantages.  The key features are:  The structure can be integrated in two-dimensional array configuration.  Low threshold currents enable high-density arrays.  Surface-normal emission and nearly identical to the photo detector geometry give easy alignment and packaging.   Circular and low divergence output beams eliminate the need for corrective optics.   Passive versus active fiber alignment, combined with high fiber-coupling efficiency.  Low-cost potential because the devices are completed and tested at the wafer level.   Lower temperature-sensitivity compared to edge-emitting laser diodes.   High transmission speed with low power consumption. Explanation of Al-Bayqooniyyah by Shaykh Abdul Qayyum Azhari (Professor at Markaz Imam Bukhari, Taloli, Thane). Al-Bayqooniyyah is description of Usool Al-Hadeeth (i.e Sciences and terminologies of Hadeeth) in poetry form. It is a poem based on the sciences of Hadeeth. The Merits of the Poem of al-Bayqūnī: Shihāb al-Dīn al-Dimyāthī said, “The poem of the knowledgeable imām of understanding and perception, al-Shaykh al-Bayqūnī (rahimullah) is one of the most interesting summaries of the science of hadīth and the most eloquent of the writings upon which one takes the rigorous course upon, for it is comprised of clear yet fine expressions that overwhelms its counterparts with a grim face.” The importance of this subject: The knowledge of usool al-hadīth is a science that serves the radiant Prophetic traditions; with it one can distinguish the Prophetic narrations in terms of authenticity and fabrication, soundness and weakness. Al-Imām ‘Abdullāh ibn al-Mubārak said, “The quality of the hadīth is not in the conciseness of the isnād, rather its quality lies in the soundness of its narrators." Al-Imām Yahyā ibn Sa`īd al-Qattān said, “Do not look at the hadīth but rather look at its chain. If the chain is sound [then the narration is sound]. If not, then do not be deceived by the narration with a chain that is not sound.” Al-Hāfiz ibn Qutaybah al-Daynūrī said, “There is no nation amongst the nations with the isnād like their chains (i.e. this nation); narrator from narrator, the trustworthy from the trustworthy in such a way until it reaches the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) and his Companions, so that the sound can be differentiated from the weak, the connected from the disconnected and the fabricated from the genuine.”

Fabian Scheurer - Bits to Pieces: Digital Fabrication in Architecture
Lecture date: 2008-02-11 The advent of digital fabrication technologies seems to have opened the doors to ever more complex shapes in architecture. Laser cutters, 3D-printers, and CNC-routers are common in architecture schools and design practices but in the real world the cleft between digital design and digital production still gapes. Where CNC-machines are used for one-to-one production, file to factory requires the integration of design, engineering, fabrication and logistics into a seamless process. Principles of mass-customisation translated to an architectural scale allow for project-specific building systems with thousands of individually shaped components. At the same time they pose new challenges and shift the complexity from machining the material to managing the information. This lecture, hosted by Mike Weinstock and Michael Hensel, will explain strategies for digital production chains using examples of work on projects by UN Studio, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, SANAA, and Shigeru Ban. Fabian Scheurer is co-founder of designtoproduction, a Zurich-based consultancy that supports architects, engineers and fabricators in realising complex designs through digital production. He has lectured at the CAAD chairs of TU Munich and ETH Zurich. His scientific work focuses on the practical aspects of artificial-life methods in architectural construction.

How stuff works??? - Gyroscope ---------------------------------------------------------- In the current video we discuss the physics behind working of the a gyroscope. Gyroscope is a key component in IMU (Inertial measurement unit). IMU is widely used in space vehicles, satellites, unmanned vehicles. The most common equipment we use in our daily lives having IMU is a smartphone. Be it android or ios, many smartphones have a gyroscope built into it. So what does gyroscope measure? Well, it is used to determine the component of angular velocity in X, Y and Z planes in 3d space. Using these values of angular velocity or rotation, different apps in the smartphones can perform various tasks. When readings of gyroscope are combined with the data from accelerometer and magnetometer (the other components in IMU), the orientation of the body in 3d space can be obtained and location of the body can be determined. The video first discusses the basic principle of gyroscope measurement using a two mass system and coriolis force effects. The value of gyroscope is inferred by measuring the displacement of masses from a fixed plate. Check out the video to understand this concept better using animations. Once the basic principle about measurement of acceleration is understood, we learn about MEMS. MEMS stands for micro electro mechanical systems. These systems make it possible for gyroscope to be fabricated into small IC (Integrated Circuit). The video then explains how MEMS for gyroscope works. Egypt's Grand Mufti condemns ISIL for "violating principles of Islam"
Egypt’s top religious authority has condemned ISIL terrorists for their atrocities in Iraq and Syria and violating the principles of Islam. Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam describes the I-S-I-L as a corrupt, extremist organization. He says the group poses a danger to Islam and tarnishes its image by killing people and spreading corruption. He says fighting terrorism requires international and regional cooperation at all levels. The terror group is currently in control of some areas in northern and north-western Iraq and Syria, committing crimes in including mass execution of civilians as well as army troops and officers.
