Better Use of Leisure Time (1950)

10:33
"Ken" has nothing to do, but the helpful interactive narrator soon puts a stop to that. Sensible leisure activities (bird watching and reading, for example) help Ken "prepare himself for better living" and "use his time well." This film is more imaginative than most when it comes to visual gimmickry. Ken later starred as Chuck-of-the-future in Good Table Manners. Keeping the world safe from beatniks, juvenile delinquents, and riff raff one 72 hour work week at a time. Producer: Coronet Instructional FIlms

What is SOCIOLOGY OF LEISURE? What does SOCIOLOGY OF LEISURE mean? SOCIOLOGY OF LEISURE meaning

What is SOCIOLOGY OF LEISURE? What does SOCIOLOGY OF LEISURE mean? SOCIOLOGY OF LEISURE meaning - SOCIOLOGY OF LEISURE definition - SOCIOLOGY OF LEISURE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Sociology of leisure is the study of how humans organize their free time. Leisure includes a broad array of activities, such as sport, tourism, and the playing of games. The sociology of leisure is closely tied to the sociology of work, as each explores a different side of the work-leisure relationship. More recent studies in the field move away from the work-leisure relationship and focus on the relation between leisure and culture. Studies of leisure have determined that observable patterns cannot be easily explained by socioeconomic variables such as income, occupation or education. The type of leisure activity is substantially influenced by the individual's immediate situation (presence or lack of family, age, and other factors). Sociology of leisure is a fairly recent subfield of sociology, compared to more traditional subfields such as sociology of work, sociology of the family, and sociology of education: it saw most of its development in the second half of the 20th century. Until then, leisure had often been seen as a relatively unimportant, minor feature of society. Leisure is now recognized as a major social institution, deserving of serious sociological inquiry, particularly in Western societies. As John Wilson and others have noted, it is difficult to define leisure. Its definitions are numerous and often mutually contradictory, for example as a discrete portion of one's time or as a quality of experience irrespective of time. Joffre Dumazedier distinguished four distinct definitions of leisure, which begin broadly and gradually narrow in scope. The first and broadest defines leisure as a style of behavior that may occur even at work, the second defines it as any non-work activity; the third further excludes family and household obligations; and, finally, the narrowest defines leisure as activities dedicated to self-fulfillment. Dumazedier's four definitions are not exhaustive. Incompatible definitions and measures are seen as a major factor accounting for occasionally contradictory research findings. There are some unresolved questions concerning the definition of work: in particular, whether unpaid endeavors, such as volunteering or studying, are work. Non-work time should not be equated with free time, as it comprises not only free time, dedicated to leisure, but also time dedicated to certain obligatory activities, such as housework. Dividing activities into free and dedicated time is not easy. For example, brushing one's teeth is neither work nor leisure; scholars differ in their classifications of activities such as eating a meal, shopping, repairing a car, attending a religious ceremony, or showering (various individuals may or may not classify such activities as leisure). The relation between work and leisure can also be unclear: research indicates that some individuals find skills that they have acquired at work useful to their hobbies (and vice versa), and some individuals have used leisure activities to advance their work careers. Sociologists also disagree as to whether political or spiritual activities should be included in studies of leisure. Further, among some occupational communities, such as police officers or miners, it is common for work colleagues to be off-time friends and to share similar, work-based leisure activities.

Urban vs Flat bar vs Hybrid Bikes Explained

04:54
Recreational bikes are designed for road, fitness, commuting and general use, requiring them to be versatile, durable and comfortable. The most common type of recreational bikes are flat bar road, hybrid and urban bikes, and while they may look the same, all of them have different features that affect their performance, ride characteristics and purpose. To help highlight the differences in each bike, we have selected some specific examples. For the flat bar road bike, we picked the Merida Speeder 100; a Merida Crossway 100 is our example of a hybrid bike; and the Norco Indie as the chosen example of an urban bike. A more in-depth guide on the differences between flat bar road, hybrid and urban bikes is available on site. https://www.bikeexchange.com/blog/ (US) https://www.bikeexchange.com.au/blog/urban-vs-flat-bar-vs-hyrbid-bikes (AUS) https://www.bikeexchange.co.uk/blog/ (UK) https://www.bikeexchange.ie/blog/ (Ireland) https://www.bikeexchange.co.nz/blog/urban-vs-flat-bar-vs-hyrbid-bikes (NZ) https://www.bikeexchange.de/blog/ (Germany) Leave us a comment below! Leisure: Leisure has often been defined as a quality of experience or as free time.[1][2] Free time is time spent away from business, work, job hunting, domestic chores, and education, as well as necessary activities such as eating and sleeping. From a research perspective, this approach has the advantages of being quantifiable and comparable over time and place.[3] Leisure as experience usually emphasizes dimensions of perceived freedom and choice. It is done for "its own sake", for the quality of experience and involvement.[1] Other classic definitions include Thorsten Veblen's (1899) of "nonproductive consumption of time."[4] Different disciplines have definitions reflecting their common issues: for example, sociology on social forces and contexts and psychology as mental and emotional states and conditions. Leisure studies and sociology of leisure are the academic disciplines concerned with the study and analysis of leisure. Recreation differs from leisure in that it is a purposeful activity that includes the experience of leisure in activity contexts. The distinction between leisure and unavoidable activities is not a rigidly defined one, e.g. people sometimes do work-oriented tasks for pleasure as well as for long-term utility.[5] A distinction may also be drawn between free time and leisure. For example, Situationist International maintains that free time is illusory and rarely fully "free"; economic and social forces appropriate free time from the individual and sell it back to them as the commodity known as "leisure".[6] Certainly most people's leisure activities are not a completely free choice and may be constrained by social pressures, e.g. people may be coerced into spending time gardening by the need to keep up with the standard of neighbouring gardens or go to a party because of social pressures. A related concept is that of social leisure, which involves leisurely activities in social settings, such as extracurricular activities, e.g. sports, clubs. Another related concept is that of family leisure. Relationships with others is usually a major factor in both satisfaction and choice. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leisure United States: The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America (/əˈmɛrɪkə/), is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19] At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2)[20] and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area,[fn 7] and the third-most populous. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city is New York City; twelve other major metropolitan areas—each with at least 4.5 million inhabitants—are Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Riverside. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States

Pastimes

05:54
Originally published in 1996, Pastimes introduced an exciting new text that explored leisure and recreation philosophy and science, the various subfields, and the leisure services industry. The purpose of this fifth edition of Pastimes is to extend the discussion about leisure in society to new concepts supported by new research findings and commentary. Throughout, the author has pursued the most interesting, relevant, exciting, and contemporary information possible. First, as an introduction to the phenomenon of leisure, the book must be current. Momentous changes, actual and alleged, have always been the root of leisure expressions and experiences. To match, Pastimes again reflects a wide range of material from the disciplines of leisure studies, sociology, psychology, economics, political science, anthropology, geography, the humanities, and media and cultural studies. Second, as a learning tool, this fifth edition teaches more. It contains new illustrations of concepts through field-based cases, biographical features, exploratory activities, and research studies. While the basic organization remains similar, in addition to new material, some former concepts have been relocated. For example, the topic of history and its meanings for leisure is now combined into one chapter. Also, the discussion of work is now combined with that about economics in the same chapter. Also, theories explaining leisure behavior are now organized according to their home discipline. A chapter on well-being and leisure is a new feature, and because of the amazing speed of change, the chapter on leisure and technology has been completely rewritten. The chapter on time has also been expanded. Finally, the last chapter on leisure systems has a new section on professional preparation. But, more than a textbook, Pastimes is very much a point of view. Leisure is presented as a human phenomenon that is individual and collective, vital and frivolous, historical and contemporary, factual and subjective, good and bad.

20. Solving the "Recreation Problem": The Development of the National Recreation Area

32:38
The role of recreation in the National Park Service (NPS) has always been somewhat ambiguous. As historian Larry Dilsaver has pointed out, “The national parks were for inspiration and education of the people not, as many supposed, for recreation per se.” Indeed, the Organic Act did not use the term “recreation” in defining the purpose of the National Parks; rather, it stated that parks were to “conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects” they contained while concurrently providing for their public “enjoyment.” However, as the NPS evolved in the 1920s recreation became an increasingly important, if unstated, part of the NPS mission. By the 1930s, the agency was seeking to solve what they termed the “park and recreation problem,” or the need to provide recreation facilities to an industrializing nation whose workers enjoyed unprecedented leisure time. As a result, the NPS proposed a new park typology—the recreation area—that was distinct from other parks in its lesser “caliber” of scenic value and greater focus on active pursuits. Though the recreation area was originally meant to function at the state or regional level, in developing the typology, the NPS soon found itself managing numerous recreation areas across the country throughout the 1940s and 50s. Eventually, following the passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964, the national recreation area (NRA) took its place as the counterpoint to the wilderness area, the two typologies creating a park use continuum with the traditional national park at its center. In 1963, an executive order officially defined the NRA as a federal land holding managed with a priority for recreation purposes and situated in close proximity to large population centers. Today there are 41 NRAs of disparate size and character, located in wilderness, rural, and urban areas, and managed by the NPS, the USFS, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). This paper traces the historical, political, and physical development of the national recreation area (NRA), from the 1930s, when it was prototyped as the problem-solving “Recreational Demonstration Area;” to the 1940s, when it became a means of NPS mission expansion in collaboration with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) on large reservoir properties; to the 1950s when, during the Echo Park Dam controversy, it became a symbol of overdevelopment in national parks; and to the 1960s, when a four-year review of national recreational resources resulted in its redefinition as a federal class of lands outside the sole purview of the NPS. Explicating this complex history of the NRA, using landscapes such as Lake Mead, Glen Canyon, Chickasaw, and Gateway National Recreation Areas as examples, expands our understanding of the NPS in the post-World War II era beyond the usual “Mission 66” story. An awareness of the historical context for this typology is also important as these resources, congressionally designated after 1963, become eligible for inclusion on the National Register.

In fact, there are three charities operating under the Impulse Leisure brand (Adur Community Leisure, Thurrock Community Leisure and West Chanctonbury Recreation Association) and all with one goal in mind; ‘creating active and healthy communities’. We are more than bricks and mortar. From the stroke survivor needing rehabilitation to those in the village keen to make new friendships. From the young athlete with potential for a podium space one day to the new mum looking to lose weight, our charity provides all this and more. As an organisation we have an increasing need to raise additional funding through external sources to support the work we do and the services we provide to the community. The redevelopment at Chanctonbury Leisure Centre is one example of this work, as well as being able to continue providing our full range of services such as specialist classes, professional expertise, crèche facilities, outreach in local schools, and a community hub for the people of Chanctonbury and surrounding areas. Recreation Workers CareerSearch.com

Career Search Recreation Workers People spend much of their leisure time participating in a wide variety of organized recreational activities, such as arts and crafts, the performing arts, camping, and sports. Recreation workers plan, organize, and direct these activities in local playgrounds and recreation areas, parks, community centers, religious organizations, camps, theme parks, and tourist attractions. Increasingly, recreation workers also are found in businesses where they organize and direct leisure activities for employees. Recreation workers hold a variety of positions at different levels of responsibility. Workers who provide instruction and coaching in art, music, drama, swimming, tennis, or other activities may be called activity specialists. Work environment. Recreation workers may work in a variety of settings—for example, a cruise ship, a woodland recreational park, a summer camp, or a playground in the center of a large urban community. Regardless of the setting, most recreation workers spend much of their time outdoors and may work in a variety of weather conditions. Recreation directors and supervisors, however, typically spend most of their time in an office, planning programs and special events. Directors and supervisors generally engage in less physical activity than do lower level recreation workers. Nevertheless, recreation workers at all levels risk suffering injuries during physical activities. In May 2006, median annual earnings of recreation workers who worked full time were $20,470. The middle 50 percent earned between $16,360 and $27,050. The lowest paid 10 percent earned less than $14,150, while the highest paid 10 percent earned $35,780 or more. However, earnings of recreation directors and others in supervisory or managerial positions can be substantially higher. Most public and private recreation agencies provide full-time recreation workers with typical benefits; part-time workers receive few, if any, benefits. CareerSearch.com

Successful Leisure in Independent Living Communities: Understanding Older Adults' Motivations to Engage in Leisure Activities Amanda Lazar, David H. Nguyen CHI '17: ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems Session: Technology Use Challenges for Older Adults Abstract Leisure activities are a source of meaning and enjoyment for individuals across the lifespan. In this study, we conducted interviews with twenty-four older adults living in four different independent living communities. We present societal and ecological factors and motivations that influenced the way people participated in and decided what constitutes leisure activities. The goal of maintaining physical and cognitive health was often intertwined with motivations to engage in leisure activities. We discuss how this fits into the broader framework of successful aging and implications for technology design. We also provide an example of how findings from this study can be applied to a specific leisure activity: watching television. Life Without Recreation

Last semester I tried to get into a photography class, and by the time I tried to sign up it was full. I am a recreation major, so my professor and I decided that I could do an "independent study" and make a photo-journal about what life would be like with out recreation. I worked at a camp this summer and this is my journey through that project! :)

Are You Making this "Leisure Mistake?"

http://www.ClutterDiet.com Get organized with home organizing tips from professional organizers at The Clutter Diet. Calgon take me away!  What do you do to unwind? You don’t have to be productive all of the time, but how you relax can say a lot about how you feel about your life. Lorie posts usually weekly here on our Lorie.TV organizing channel. Lorie Marrero is the creator of ClutterDiet.com and the author of The Clutter Diet: The Skinny on Organizing Your Home and Taking Control of Your Life. Lorie also serves as a national spokesperson for Goodwill Industries International and is a Contributing Editor to Woman's Day magazine. Find her on Facebook at http://www.LorieFacebook.com and Instagram at http://www.LorieInstagram.com. Hi, I'm Lorie Marrero and today I want to talk about what you like to do for fun. I'm sitting here on my sofa. I've got my iPad and I really enjoy playing the occasional game of Words With Friends or reading on my Kindle app and I love to go on hikes and walks with my family, my friends, and generally just play and get outside and be with the people that I love. I don't know what you like to do for fun, but I want you to think today about whether those leisure activities are what I call low engagement activities or high engagement activities. So low engagement is passive versus active. It's something that's happening to you instead of something that you're doing. Watching television is a perfect example of a low engagement activity. Watching a movie, playing certain types of video games where you kind of zone out, certainly excessive sleeping is a low engagement activity and excessive substance use and alcohol use. So that contrasted with high engagement activities, these are active versus passive. It requires a higher level of involvement with your mind and with other people and with nature; as I mentioned being outside, hiking, walking, running, generally just playing. What are you doing for fun? Is it low engagement or high engagement? The bigger better question is when you step away from your life, your work, you get away, you do something different, you have your leisure activities, are you relaxing or are you escaping? Now sometimes we have situations in our lives where we are in a difficult situation where we're caring for someone who's ill or something is really going wrong in our family and it requires a lot of attention and stress, and it is very difficult to not be in that situation and you're sort of stuck with that right now. You may feel the need to escape and do more low engagement activities. That is understandable, but I want you to be aware of this distinction and ask yourself what you can change. You may have heard of the Serenity Prayer. It talks about accepting the things that you can't change, the courage to change the things you can, and the wisdom to know the difference. It starts with awareness. Are you escaping or are you relaxing? What kind of activities are you doing? I'd like to know what you like to do for fun, share in the comments and share your insights on this. Just be more aware of this as you go into weekend and try to choose more high engagement, relaxing activities. We'll see you next time and may you always be happy and grateful for having more than enough.
