What It's Like To Walk Alone As A Woman In Cairo

01:52
Follow us on Facebook to stay updated on the full documentary! http://facebook.com/benaatelnas Support us on Kickstarter! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tinnevl/anti-harassment-documentary-the-peoples-girls This video shows what it’s like for a girl to walk alone in Cairo, no matter what time of day. Though the video only includes stares, it gives an idea of just how intimidating it can be in the street. As a woman, Egyptian or foreign, comments and stares are the norm every time we step out the door, no matter what we’re wearing. From our interview with Egyptian Streets: COULD YOU TELL US HOW THE VIDEO WAS RECORDED? Colette walked down the Kasr El-Nil bridge, secretly recording with an iPhone. She held it by her mouth with headphones plugged in and pretended to talk on the phone. She pretended to be deep in conversation, looking straight ahead of her. Whenever she felt eyes on her, she turned the phone slightly towards them. The clip was filmed in a single 5 minute walk around sunset, as people often gather on the bridge after the temperature cools down. We made sure to record Colette beforehand in order to show her appearance. Because she is of Arab descent, she fits in with Egyptian society more easily. She wore a long skirt, a t-shirt, and a cardigan to prevent any dismissals of the footage, such as having worn something to provoke them. As groups of men often stare together, we decided to slow down the video for viewers to view all their intimidating expressions at once. We also recorded catcalls while filming, but because Colette was pretending to be on the phone, we couldn’t include them without hearing her speak in Arabic. Instead, we decided to pair the footage with the song “A3akes Ah At7rash La2″ by Sadat & Fifty, translating to “Flirting, Yes, Harassment, No.” We thought it was particularly fitting since most young men listen to popular Electro Sh3abi music. EGYPT: CAIRO: NEW PYRAMID DATING BACK TO 1800 BC IS OPENED TO PUBLIC

02:59
Arabic/Eng/Nat A new pyramid, dating back to 1800 B-C, has been opened to the public in Egypt. The red pyramid at Dahshour is believed to be the prototype of the famous pyramids at Giza. The authorities hope they will take the pressure off the pyramids at Giza which are fast deteriorating due to mass tourism. Experts believe the area may be full of archaeological surprises After 50 years, these pyramids, pre-dating those at Giza, have been opened to the public. Up until now, this area just 20 kilometres (15 miles) from Giza, was used as an army training base and was out of bounds to the public. But authorities eager to increase tourism revenue persuaded the army to open up the site. At the opening ceremony on Saturday, the Egyptian minister of culture said the area may hold some archaeological surprises. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "A complete and magnificent pyramid, and it is open for tourists starting today. We started renovating it and levelling the surrounding area. I am not an expert, but I believe that this place is still a virgin for excavations." SUPERCAPTION: Farouk Hosni, Egyptian Minsiter of Culture The Red Pyramid at Dahshour dates back to 1800 B-C and is sure to delight the thousands of tourists who visit Egypt each year. VOXPOP: (English) "It's amazing, it's amazing. I don't know really what to say. The view from up there is incredible." SUPERCAPTION: English tourist VOXPOP: (English) It's just very different. It's less built up, very nice. You can just see everywhere. Despite what we imagined pyramids would be like." SUPERCAPTION: English tourist It was built by King Senefru who broke away from the tradition of building step-sided pyramids. He declared himself the living sun god Re' and built his burial chamber not under the Pyramid's earth, but high inside the pyramid. His mummy, discovered in 19-48, has since disappeared. It took an estimated 20-thousand workers 15 years to complete. Senefru's fame was overshadowed by his son and successor King Cheops, whose Giza pyramid is the largest in Egypt and one of the seven wonders of the world. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Cheops is a star of the pyramids, but today I can say that we have another star - the pyramid of Senefru, the Red Pyramid and the Bend Pyramid." SUPERCAPTION: Zahi Hawas, Head of Antiquities Twelve (m) million tourists visited the Giza pyramids last year. Those who went inside Cheops, Chephren and Mycerinus have contributed to its deterioration. Water vapour causes salt to diffuse out of the stones, substantially weakening them. It's hoped that the opening of the Dahshour pyramid will ease the tourist demand on the Giza pyramids. But the Egyptian government is also hoping it will boost its income. Western GIRL walking alone in CAIRO, Egypt (July 2014)

06:20
More about me: https://cataldi.com/ INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/rosaliacataldi/ FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/rosalia.cataldi6/ TWITTER https://twitter.com/Rosalia_Cataldi I'm italian 100% with italian ancestors, so my opinion is totally neutral. I had a nice walk in Cairo (Egypt), in July 2014, wearing western clothes and without hijab. Nothing happened, I've met on the street many men and nobody bothered me. Except the taxi drivers, but they just asked me if I need a taxi, that's all. Of course, you don't have to wear short skirts or very sexy dresses if you are on the street, but this rule counts everywhere in the world not just in Egypt. Remember my friend that if you go there, you are a guest and they host you in their "home", so be polite, they respect your culture, you don't need to wear the hijab if you are a woman, but please, just do a small "sacrifice" and cover your legs and your shoulders, it's not a big sofference doing it, but it helps you to avoid some bad situations. Please be polite and respect egyptian culture. I'm very sad when I watch videos who give people the wrong idea about egyptian society, expecially egyptian men. It hurts not only men, but also egyptian women, because the local tourism and, consecuentely, the economy of this wonderful country, are influenced by what worldwide pupulation thinks about them. Hope you are not that naive or superficial to believe to someone who just wants to make psychological terrorism and make everybody afraid. Thank you to watch this video, hope you like it. Have a nice life and enjoy Egypt! Rosalia

EGYPT: NEAR CAIRO: MAJOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERY

02:04
English/Nat Work on a new museum in Egypt has been stopped unexpectedly after antiquities dating back thousands of years were accidentally unearthed near the construction site. Among the discoveries ... a coffin, skeleton and pottery. . In the shadow of the famous step pyramid at Saqara a new museum is taking shape. But work on the new building has been stopped. Just yards from the construction site, excavators unexpectedly unearthed antiquities dating back to the 26th dynasty (664 - 525 BC). Among the new discoveries - an intact coffin and skeleton. Also in the tomb a number of pieces of pottery. Officials from the Egyptian antiquities department called an immediate halt to the building work to protect the site. The museum will now be built elsewhere. SOUNDBITE: English The most important reason now for stopping the building of this museum is because of the archeological discoveries that have been found around the building. Therefore because they are thinking of putting sand above it, you can't put sand above archeological artefacts. The area for the museum has no artefacts but when you cover it with sand you have to be sure there is nothing underground. What is really under ground is evidence that should stop the museum. SUPERCAPTION: Zahi Hawass, Head of Giza Plateau Very delicately the coffin has been removed from the tomb where it has lain undiscovered for so long. It has been taken away for inspection and safe-keeping. Egypt: Mummified cats, scarab beetles discovered in ancient tombs near Cairo

03:55
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe Seven ancient Egyptian tombs containing mummified cats and scarabs, have been discovered in the Saqqara necropolis, 30 km (19mi) south of Cairo, according to an announcement by Egypt's Minister of Antiquities Khaled El-Enany on Saturday. Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Dr Mostafa Waziri, said he believes this is the first time the preserved insects have ever been found, saying "we asked museums in many countries if they have mummified scarabs, but no one have mummified scarabs till today." Three of the tombs, which date back to the New Kingdom period and are between 3500 and 3000 years old, appear to have been used for feline burial as dozens of mummified moggies were discovered within, as well as wooden cat statutes and representations of the cat goddess Bast. The other four tombs are believed to date from the Old Kingdom period and are thus at least 4000 years old. Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt. Cairo is a world metropolis and tantamount to being an open-air museum. The Nile divides it in two and the centre of the city contains modern shops and office buildings in close proximity to medieval churches and ancient mosques. The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is like something from a bygone age and where the Orient combines with the Middle Ages, 'A Thousand And One Nights' amid Islamic Cairo. Goods inspired by pharaohs Tutankhamen and Nefertiti are in constant demand and it's where haggling is the norm. The bazaar is a colorful place with smoking hookahs, exotic carpets and musical instruments as well as a huge array of herbs and spices. Abu Serga is the city's oldest church and dates back to Fatima times. It was built on the ruins of an even older church in the Coptic district of Cairo. The three-aisled basilica was founded by Roman Christians at the end of the 4th century. Built in 1902, the Egyptian Museum's 150,000 exhibits amount to being one of the greatest historical collections in the world. When both the Greek and Roman civilizations had reached the zenith of their power, Egypt already had a history that dated back almost 3,000 years. In 1830, King Mohammed Ali had a mosque built and named it after himself but it is now more commonly known as the Alabaster Mosque. It was 18 years in construction and was built on the site of a former Mamluk Palace. Egypt and its capital of Cairo is the oldest cultural land on Earth. A country that impresses with both its 5,000 years of history and lively modern spirit. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. Cat & Scarab Mummies, Lion Statues and Sealed Tomb Found in Egypt | Ancient Architects

05:11
In one the strangest finds to come out of Egypt , experts have unearthed dozens of cat mummies as well as a rare collection of mummified scarab beetles in seven tombs in a site located on the edge of the pyramid complex in Saqqara in Egypt. The complex is 4 and half thousand years old in age, placing it within the 5th dynasty of the Old Kingdom period of Ancient Egyptian history. Three of the tombs had been used just for cats, whilst the four others belonged to Khufu-Imhat, overseer of the buildings in the royal palace, and intriguingly one of the tombs still remains unopened. This specific tomb is very exciting because the faced and the door remain intact, meaning its contents may be undisturbed. The tomb is found at the edge of the King Userkaf pyramid complex south of Cairo, a necropolis believed to date back to between 2,500 and 2,350 BC. The tombs were found in a buried ridge that has only partially been uncovered and authorities are expecting yet more discoveries in the coming months. Watch the video to learn more. The Pyramids of Giza—the Great Pyramid of Khufu, Pyramid of Khafre, and Pyramid of Menkaure—still live up to more than 4,000 years of hype. Seeing these three fourth-dynasty pyramids and their guardian Great Sphinx rising from the Giza Plateau is a must on any trip to Cairo (and the reason many travelers find themselves in Egypt) Music: Elektronomia - Fire killercats - Kiabu (NCS Release) ♡ SUBSCRIBE♡ ● Facebook: WOHOworldholidays ● Twitter: @WOHOworldholidays ● Instagram: @WOHOworldholidays Special thanks: Sunny Land Tours
