The Dark Art of Political Intimidation

Intimidation, harassment, and blackmail have become the norm in American politics. Why? Because it works. Kimberley Strassel, author of The Intimidation Game, explains. You are totally free to express your political views. No one is going to tell you what you can say or how you can say it, right? But what if you thought you’d be audited by the IRS or have your business boycotted or even lose your job? Would you speak freely then? This isn’t a hypothetical question. It’s happening to Americans right now. It’s what I call “The Intimidation Game.” The object of this very real “game” is to make political opponents pay a high price for expressing their opinions. It was a standard technique in the Jim Crow South in the 1950’s. It was used by racist southern Democrats to shut up black civil rights groups like the NAACP. And now these tactics have been revived and improved upon by today’s Democratic Party and their allies on the Progressive Left. They want to shut up conservatives; just like racists once wanted to shut up blacks and their liberal supporters. They do it in three ways. First, they harass; Second, they investigate and prosecute; and third, they blackmail. Tactic number one: Harass. They sic federal and state agencies and bureaucrats on their political enemies. Remember the IRS targeting scandal that began in 2010? That’s when the IRS systematically denied or delayed non-profit status to more than 400 citizen-activist groups, almost all conservative. These groups, representing tens of thousands of Americans, clearly met the IRS’s tax-exempt standards. But the IRS delay and denial made it impossible for these groups to raise or spend money during the 2012 presidential election. Had they been able to, would the election have turned out differently? We’ll never know. Some of these groups are still waiting for their nonprofit approval. Democrats continue to claim the scandal was the result of some rogue IRS agents who didn’t understand the law. Not true. We know from documents obtained through Congressional investigations and the Freedom of Information Act that the IRS was taking its cue from powerful Democrats and their left-wing allies, like MoveOn.org. For example, Michigan Senator Carl Levin repeatedly pressured the agency to investigate conservative non-profits. Meanwhile, in speeches, President Barack Obama warned about “shadowy” Tea Party groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS’s non-profit division and a Democratic Party loyalist, took the hint. Tactic number two: Investigate and prosecute. In Wisconsin, Democrat prosecutors engaged in a bogus campaign-finance investigation into conservative groups that had supported Wisconsin’s Republican Governor Scott Walker. The prosecutors subpoenaed emails and financial records of the groups and its employees. They staged pre-dawn raids on the homes of Wisconsin conservatives, confiscating computers and correspondence. Then, they warned the victims of these phony investigations and terrorizing raids that they’d go to jail if they told anyone what was happening to them. It took the state Supreme Court to end this use of the government to suppress political opponents. But the message was sent by Democrats in Wisconsin: cross us, and you will pay a steep price. LSE Events | Politics in Modern Arab Art | Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi

01:33:37
Date: Tuesday 18 October 2016 Time: 6.30-8pm Venue: Old Theatre, Old Building Speaker: Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi Chair: Professor Toby Dodge In his lecture, UAE based writer and art collector Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi will be discussing the political undertones of iconic artworks of the 20th century in the Arab world. From the Baathist regimes of Syria and Iraq to Egypt’s pan-Arabism under Gamal Abdel Nasser, paintings and sculptures in addition to film and performance have been employed by various governments as a tool of soft power to propagate their policies to the public not only in their respective states but throughout the region and beyond. Despite this government patronage of the arts, many artists have chosen to challenge their authorities through their art practices. This talk is an attempt to shed light on an often neglected dimension in the modern history of the Arab world. Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi (@SultanAlQassemi) is a United Arab Emirates-based columnist whose articles have appeared in The Financial Times, The Independent, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, The New York Times Room for Debate, Foreign Policy, Open Democracy, and The Globe and Mail, as well as other notable publications. Al Qassemi is also a prominent commentator on Arab affairs on Twitter. Rising in prominence during the Arab Spring, his tweets became a major news source, rivalling the major news networks at the time, until TIME magazine listed him in the “140 Best Twitter Feeds of 2011.” Al Qassemi is an MIT Media Labs Director’s Fellow, and in 2014, Arabian Business placed Al Qassemi in its list of World’s 100 Most Powerful Arabs under the Thinkers category. He continues both to write and tweet about the Arab world both from his home in Sharjah, as well as while giving lectures internationally. Al Qassemi is also the founder of the Barjeel Art Foundation, an independent initiative established to contribute to the intellectual development of the art scene in the Arab region by building a prominent and publicly accessible art collection in the United Arab Emirates. Barjeel Art Foundation currently has exhibitions at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, and the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Professor Toby Dodge is Director of the LSE Middle East Centre, a Professor in the International Relations Department at LSE, and a Senior Consulting Fellow for the Middle East, International Institute for Strategic Studies, London. The Kuwait Programme on Development, Governance and Globalisation in the Gulf States is a ten year multidisciplinary global research programme.

Marcel Dzama: Organizing Chaos | Art21 "Extended Play"

07:53
Episode #259: Shown at work in his Brooklyn studio, Marcel Dzama discusses the evolution of his drawings, from his time growing up in his native Winnipeg, to his move to New York in 2004, to his more recent responses to U.S. politics and media. Fascinated by childhood monsters, like the Wolfman and Dracula, Dzama ruminates on his early drawings, often populated by three or four human, animal, or hybrid figures against isolated white backgrounds and inspired by Winnipeg’s snowy winters. While attending the University of Manitoba, the artist recalls a house fire that destroyed much of his early work and forced him to work on hotel stationary for his final thesis project. As Dzama paints a new drawing of masked dancers in blue watercolor and root-beer syrup, he explains the formal and conceptual influences on his work, from Francis Picabia’s use of polka dots to the connection between the early twentieth century Dada artists’ condemnation of World War I and the artist’s own response to contemporary U.S. politics. Shown working on a pencil drawing inspired by American activist and survivor of the 2018 Parkland school shooting, Emma Gonzalez, the artist explains his practice as an exorcism of his daily news media diet. Dzama also charts the impact of his move to New York on the work, expanding on how his white backgrounds became more densely populated with figures. Turning to dance magazine as a way to conceive of his drawings as still images of stage productions, Dzama began to organize the chaos of figures into stylized formations and moved away from animal figures, in favor of humans or human figures in animal costumes. Characterizing his drawings as having, “one foot in the subconscious,” the artist describes his practice of working at night, during a “witching hour,” when his most uncensored ideas can flow and anything feels possible. Marcel Dzama was born in 1974 in Winnipeg, Canada. Fantastical and absurd, Dzama’s drawings feature a cast of humans, animals, and hybrid creatures rendered in pencil, ink, watercolor, and, at times, root-beer syrup. Dzama draws upon a mix of influences—from childhood monsters, like the Wolfman and Dracula, to the work of artists like Marcel Duchamp, Francisco Goya, William Blake, and Francis Picabia—to create unique worlds that are at once surreal and familiar, sweet and violent, and chaotic and elegant. Minimalism: From Aesthetics to Politics

A brief deconstruction of the concept of minimalism. Specifically, I look at how certain minimalists have increasingly used minimalism as an aesthetic choice over recent years. USA: JOHN F KENNEDY JNR IS CO-FOUNDING A NEW POLITICAL MAGAZINE

01:59
English/Nat One of the political world's most famous names is throwing his hat into the publishing ring. John F Kennedy Junior is lending his insider's viewpoint to a new political magazine called "George". Kennedy describes "George" as an alternative look at the political culture. But that's not what most of the media gathered in New York for the launch of the magazine wanted to hear, forcing Kennedy to answer the lingering questions about his recent personal trials. His name is synomous with the American political scene. No surprise that John Kennedy is co-founding a new magazine devoted to that political culture. "George" promises to take an irreverent, alternative look at the movers, shakers and goings-on of the political scene. SOUNDBITE: "Politics isn't dull. It isn't dry. So why should a magazine that covers it be? In fact, "George" just doesn't cover politics, it celebrates it. We will celebrate it. Celebrate it as a general rule, but we won't be afraid to criticize it." SUPER CAPTION: John F Kennedy Junior, "George" Co-Founder Appropriately, the launch was staged at New York's Federal Hall, the site where George Washington was inaugurated as America's first president. Kennedy says "George" isn't your ordinary political magazine. It will take a non-partisan look at a wide variety of issues pertaining to politics. SOUNDBITE: "George" is about the art of politics and the politics of art. So we will review films and books and music. We'll talk about fashion, television and art, all as they relate to the political process. All without the blinders of ideology." SUPER CAPTION: John F Kennedy Junior But what reporters really wanted to know about is Kennedy's recent personal travails, including on-and-off rumours of his engagement. SOUNDBITE: "The answers to the most frequently asked personal questions are as follows: Yes. No. We're merely good friends. None of your business. Honest, she's my cousin from Rhode Island. I've worn both. Maybe someday, but not New Jersey." SUPER CAPTION: John F Kennedy Junior While Kennedy didn't satisfy reporter's curiosity about his personal life, he seems satisfied that "George" will be a success. ‘Power as a political message’ – Steve Lazarides on the street art revolution

09:54
Watch the full episode here: http://bit.ly/1sdmcXJ Steve Lazarides, owner of the Lazarides gallery, talks to Going Underground host Afshin Rattansi about the power of street art. He says for thousands of years it has been used against oppressive regimes as a way of getting out sentiments against them, and still has power in the right place. In the last 5 years, he believes there has been a shift where people & property developers are realising the value of public art, and are allowing it to happen. He points out that graffiti artists have to be able to make money from what they do, otherwise the only people who will be able to make street art are the sons and daughters of the rich and famous, and it gives the freedom to do bigger, more ambitious projects. There are only a few artists doing political art, but in the right place it can have a staggering impact, such as some of the work by French artist JR, which has been participated in across the globe. He says the work resonates with the general public, and Banksy’s book Wall and Piece selling 1.5 million copies shows it appeals to more than just art lovers. He allows artists in his gallery freedom to express themselves, and says some of the pieces he thought were close to the bone have taught him never to underestimate the general public’s capacity for darkness. And there is an inherent politics to graffiti that seems to upset conservatives, which he describes as ‘perfect’. The dilemma that politicians face is that they find it hard to be themselves under the gaze of the press and public. 18.10.2011 The Works Ai Weiwei's Detention and Political Art in China

10:32
Last week the Chinese government criticised the international art magazine ArtReview for voting a Chinese artist the most powerful person in the art world. It would seem a surprising move until you realise that the artist concerned was Ai Weiwei, who was, earlier this year, detained for more than 80 days by the country's authorities. His detention sent a chill through the Chinese art world, but despite that, some of the country's artists are still determined to express their political opinions. The Works talked to some of them in Beijing.
