Reducing Girls' School Absences in Africa

03:00
From VOA Learning English, this is the Education Report in Special English.A new study shows that simple, low-cost interventions can help teenage girls in Africa stay in school during their monthly periods. Paul Montgomery of Oxford University in Britain led the study. He said women are a driving force of development across Africa. So it is important, he said, to keep girls in school. One hundred twenty girls in Ghana took part in the study. Their average age was 16. They attended three secondary schools in urban areas and one in a rural area.In the study, girls at two of the schools received free sanitary pads and lessons on puberty. Their attendance increased by an average of six days during a 65-day school term. The puberty lessons included information about personal care during menstruation. The girls also learned about the biology of their developing bodies and about pregnancy. At the third school, the girls received the lessons but not the free pads. Attendance by these girls also improved about the same amount, over five months. At the fourth school the girls did not receive the pads or the lessons. That group showed no improvement in school attendance. Paul Montgomery says the girls in the study had several reasons for missing school during their monthly bleeding. A majority expressed embarrassment about the changes in their bodies.Paul Montgomery says the interventions might not only keep girls from missing school, but also reduce teen pregnancies. The Public Library of Science published the study in its journal PLOS One. A larger study is taking place in Uganda until 2015. In Aiding Rescue of Kidnapped Schoolgirls in Nigeria, Will U.S. Expand Military Foothold in Africa?

13:53
http://www.democracynow.org - In a speech today, President Obama is expected to lay out a U.S. foreign policy approach that avoids large wars like Iraq and Afghanistan, and shifts instead to partnering with countries on counterterrorism efforts. This comes as The New York Times reports the Obama administration has launched a program to train "homegrown African counterterrorism teams" in Libya, Niger, Mauritania and Mali. Just last week, the United States also deployed a battalion of 80 marines to Nigeria to help search for the nearly 300 missing schoolgirls there. The head of Nigeria's military has said the military now knows where the abducted girls are being held, but has ruled out using force to rescue them for fear of endangering their lives. We discuss the situation in Nigeria and the growing fears that the schoolgirls' kidnapping could be exploited to further U.S. militarism in Africa with two guests: Dayo Olopade is a Nigerian-American journalist and author of "The Bright Continent: Breaking Rules and Making Change in Modern Africa"; and Carl LeVan, assistant professor at American University's School of International Service and author of the forthcoming book, "Dictators and Democracy in African Development: the Political Economy of Good Governance in Nigeria." Health and Education in Africa: the Tarkwa Breman Model School for Girls and Community Clinic

02:55
Shadrack Frimpong has vowed to challenge the notion that investing in girls’ education isn’t worthwhile. As a President’s Engagement Prize-winner, Frimpong hopes to make a difference for the girls and families of Tarkwa Breman, the rural Ghanaian village where he grew up. His prize money will go toward the construction of a girls’ school and a medical clinic. Frimpong, a biology major in the College of Arts & Sciences with extensive global health coursework, has witnessed friends and family members in Tarkwa Breman suffer from HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, and other diseases—a situation compounded by the village’s lack of accessible health care. He also realized that the failure to provide an education to girls leads them down a path that too often ends a sexually transmitted disease or high-risk adolescent pregnancy, as was the case with one of Frimpong’s childhood friends. “My friend’s situation showed me how health and education are inextricably linked,” Frimpong says. Frimpong’s plans are comprehensive: With the support of his parents, he met with his village’s chief, who arranged for the donation of 100 acres of land where the facilities will be built. A portion of that land will be turned into a farm on which students’ families will work, once a week, in exchange for a free education for their daughters. Revenues from the cocoa crops will help pay for the school’s maintenance costs. He is working with the Ghanaian ministries of Health and Education to supply teachers and doctors to staff the school, which is planned to accommodate 200 students, and clinic, slated to include consultation rooms, a pharmacy, a dressing/injection room, a laboratory, a delivery room, and an on-call room. Frimpong will be in Tarkwa Breman this summer to oversee plans for the facility. Penn architecture students, guided by Richard Wesley of the School of Design, will also be traveling there to survey the land and design the building, which is expected to open in the summer of 2016. Then, starting the following fall, Frimpong plans to go back and forth between Ghana and the U.S. while he attends medical school, pursuing joint degrees in medicine and health policy.

Oprah Visits South Africa School

02:44
For more news and videos visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Add us on Facebook ☛ http://on.fb.me/s5KV2C American talk show host Oprah Winfrey visits the school she set up for underprivileged girls in South Africa. She says the money and work involved in creating the school was worth the effort. Oprah Winfrey visited the Leadership Academy For Girls in South Africa on Thursday. The school cost Winfrey $40 million of her own money. It was set up in 2007 in Henley on Klip, a town just south of Johannesburg. She says all the money and work involved has been worth the effort. [Oprah Winfrey, American Talk Show Host]: "This has been harder than I ever imagined, it has cost more money than I ever imagined, 10 times more than I was told it would, 10 times more work than I was told it would, 10 times more commitment, 10 times more devotion and yet every single sacrifice has been worth it." The South African government has been criticized for neglecting public schools particularly in poor and rural areas where classrooms are often overcrowded and inadequately funded. High levels of classroom violence, teenage pregnancy and drug abuse exacerbate the poor standard of education. But Winfrey says her academy does not have those problems. [Oprah Winfrey, American Talk Show Host]: "What's been exciting about this school, and if you ask any teacher, and I was just talking to the head of the school about this, not one moment has to be spent on discipline, not one moment of our time is spent trying to bring order into the classroom, or trying to get somebody to behave, or trying to get somebody to be kind, or try to stop somebody from bullying, not one moment. Every single girl who comes here understands the value of being here." The school recently announced that it achieved a 100% pass rate for it's 72 graduating students. Winfrey believes the girls can achieve anything they want. [Oprah Winfrey, American Talk Show Host]: "So what I have told these girls is that my expectation is no bar. You were raised, you were born, for most of these girls who came into the school they were born in 1994. They were born the year apartheid ended. They were born free, they were born free, so the expectation for you is to live up to that birth right because you were born free." The sleekly designed campus encompasses state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories equipped with flat screen computers, a yoga studio, beauty salon and a well-stocked library.

The school is named after Queen Alexandra Caroline, Queen Consort of England, and first opened on 23 February 1960. Though it was initially a whites-only, all-boys school, the first non-white pupil was admitted in June 1991. Alexandra High School became co-educational at the beginning of 1992. The school colours are maroon and blue. Both genders have two uniforms: winter and summer, also known as "Number one" and "Number two" uniforms respectively. The boy's winter uniform consists of a maroon blazer, a white button up shirt (long sleeved or short sleeved), a maroon and powder blue tie and long grey pants. The shoes are shiny brown leather, and the socks are dark grey. The boy's summer uniform consists of a khaki safari suit, with long khaki socks and the same shiny brown leather shoes. African Cotton Industries documentary on Kenya's free sanitary towels for school girls project

11:58
African Cotton Industries Ltd. was selected as the supplier of choice for The Government of Kenya / Ministry of Education National sanitary towels for school girls pilot program. The firm, the only local manufacturer of this product in Kenya, successfully delivered sanitary towels to 2,240 schools via 40 District Education Offices (DEOs) across Kenya. This reached 251,435 needy girls between standards 4 and 8 in primary schools across Kenya. The firm also partnered with The Girl Child Network to ensure training on areas such as use and disposal were passed on to teachers. African Cotton Industries was proud to have been selected for this important developmental issue by the Ministry of Education, and have Flora branded sanitary towels reach out to girls who would otherwise have not been able to attend school due to a lack of basic sanitation. This adversely affects their performance in schools, and brings the onset of other cultural factors including early marriage, HIV, verbal abuse by teachers and child labour. African Cotton Industries is a local Kenyan manufacturer, selling a range of fast moving consumer goods across East and Central African for over 50 years. Look Back at the First Day of the Academy | The First Graduating Class | Oprah Winfrey Network

06:20
An old African proverb states, "She who learns, teaches." On December 31, 2006, that's exactly what happened when Oprah opened the doors to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy—and the futures of a group of hand-picked students. Look back at the very first day on campus and see the simple amenity that was a huge hit with the girls. Then, meet Mashadi. See where she came from and find out where she wants her future to take her. For more on #The First Graduating Class, visit Oprah.com. South Africa Experience: Durban Girls Secondary School

04:08
http://www.hope-universe.com One of the greatest highlights of our trip to South Africa was the time spent at the Durban Girls Secondary School. I was a guest speaker for their Women's Day Program. I am told that the girls come from tough situations but they have strength, enthusiasm, and resiliency that is Awesome to behold... you will see some of their power shine through this video as they sing, pray, dance, and declare their Greatness to the world! Thanks Jonathan Annipen for bringing this together and for a beautiful song of praise. http://youtu.be/s0k3PEUyQOg

Architectural Rendering of Girls Secondary School Dormitory in Tanzania

03:08
Take a look around this architectural rendering of the dormitory complex Africa School Assistance Project is constructing throughout Tanzania. These dormitory complexes will serve secondary school girls in rural areas, the girls most in need of safe learning environments and a fair chance at education. The Kupanda Project will include 1) dormitories with wrap-around services, including safety, nutrition, clean water, sanitation and menstrual support, 2) academic programs, including teacher training, science & math, computer training, and personal tutoring, 3) leadership & empowerment development, and 4) community education and engagement to build support for girl’s education. Thanks to Venture Architecture (Denver, CO USA) for the design of this complex and the beautiful rendering shown here!
