Oprah Winfrey talks about her academy for girls

03:28
(13 Jan 2012) FIRST GIRLS TO GRADUATE FROM OPRAH WINFREY'S ACADEMY IN SOUTH AFRICA Oprah Winfrey makes no apologies for spending millions on an elite school for underprivileged South African girls. But she's also looking for ways to make her money stretch further to help more struggling Africans. Winfrey spoke Friday (13 JAN 2012) on the eve of the first graduation at her school. Of the 75 students who started at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in 2007, 72 will graduate Saturday. All are headed to universities in South Africa and the United States to pursue such studies as medicine, law, engineering and economics. Across South Africa, more than half a million members of the class of 2011 disappeared before the 496,000 remaining took their final exams. Only a quarter of those who graduated did well enough to qualify for university study. "We're taking a victory lap here, for transformation," Winfrey said. "Every single girl is going to leave here with something greater to offer the world than her body." South Africa is struggling to overcome the inequalities of apartheid, which ended in 1994. The country has too few schools at all levels, and many lack such basics as libraries and are staffed by undereducated teachers. Earlier this week, a stampede at a Johannesburg university campus killed a mother who had accompanied her son to an in-person application day. Thousands were vying for a few hundred spots at the university. Winfrey, who spent $40 million on her campus, said her focus was "just to change one girl, affect one person's life." But she acknowledged hers "is not a sustainable model for most people in most countries." Another new class starts at Winfrey's school next week. But to help more young Africans, Winfrey said she would be working with established philanthropies to identify schools around the developing world that can be strengthened with money. She hopes to adapt some of the practices of her school, including creating strong support networks for students. "It takes a lot of support, it takes a whole team," she said, saying teachers and communities would have to be active participants. Her focus on girls was not among the strategies she would change. Winfrey said studies have shown helping girls helps entire communities, in part because girls and women give back so much. I know what it's like to be a poor girl with your heart's desire to do well in the world," she added. "I chose to use my philanthropy to do what I know." Winfrey said she also might work more quietly in the future, to spare those she helps the kind of scrutiny celebrity draws. The achievements at Winfrey's school came despite turmoil in its first years. A woman working as a dormitory matron at the school was accused of abusing teenagers soon after it was opened. She was acquitted in 2010. Winfrey, who has spoken of being abused as a child and called the allegations against the matron crushing, and has said the trial's outcome was "profoundly" disappointing. Winfrey settled a defamation lawsuit filed in Philadelphia by the school's former headmistress, Nomvuyo Mzamane, who claimed Winfrey defamed her in remarks made in the wake of the scandal. Last year, a baby born to a student at the school was found dead. The events would have been newsworthy had they involved any school, but drew particularly frenzied attention because of the Winfrey connection. As a celebrity, Winfrey said: "All of your mistakes are amplified and show up on the evening news." Winfrey said there were times when she wondered if her project would fail, but she could not give up, both for herself and for Nelson Mandela, who she says inspired her to build the school. #WorthBleedingFor: No pads - No school for African girls

02:15
Imagine using old clothing, rags, papers, leaves or grass to soak up menstrual blood. Imagine being humiliated, embarrassed when having your period. These are some of the challenges around 2.1 million South African schoolgirls face. Not being able to afford sanitary pads, many schoolgirls even miss classes. But, a new campaign is aiming to stop the problem #WorthBleedingFor are calling for pads to be made freely available and keep girls in school. Amnesty International Wits kicked the campaign off in Johannesburg. On average, a girl misses approximately 5 days of school per month. This equates to 60 school days a year. Those who can’t face the challenges, drop out of school completely. Others don't want to use school toilets. For fear of being humiliated by boys who see them. Unsanitary alternatives can destroy their chances of having a baby. Campaigners want freely available pads for students and staff around the country. This way, girls can continue their education just like boys. #WorthBleedingFor says pads are a necessity not a luxury. Pads are expensive in the country notably for households earning less than 500 Rands a month. The campaign also wants government to remove taxes from the product. Five years ago, President Jacob Zuma made a promise: He pledged to provide free sanitary pads for poor women. This promise is yet to be fulfilled. Due to a lack of clean water and sanitary toilets in rural areas, Menstruation is a challenge not only in South Africa, But also in sub-Saharan Africa Where 1 in 3 women walk for long distances to use a clean toilet. Access to basic sanitation and pads is a human right Which makes this campaign #WorthBleedingFo

School girls in africa developped a Generator Powered by URINE

02:09
It's a chemistry lesson with a difference.....the teachers are all ears while their pupils demonstrate an invention they think could help solve Nigeria's chronic electricity shortage. Their invention is the ultimate in waste recycling.....harnessing the power of pee to make a generator. "We opted for urine, since, one, it's a waste product, and if we use urine as we carry out electrolysis, if we use urine, our waste product or our exhaust gas is going to be water and that's not poisonous to our environment," says Duro-Aina Adebola, student inventor. The system works via an electrolytic cell that breaks the urine down into nitrogen, water and hydrogen. Fourteen-year-old Duro-Aina Adebola is one of four girls at Lagos's Doregos Private Academy who devised the generator. "This hydrogen oxygen gas mixture goes into our water filter and the function of the water filter is to remove any impurities from our hydrogen oxygen gas mixture. The hydrogen oxygen gas then goes into our cylinder here which temporarily stores the gas when ever we need the gas," says Adebola. The cylinder contains liquid borax which purifies the hydrogen, making it ready for use. The generator can produce up to six hours of electricity per litre of urine. Their teacher says his pupils have even found a solution to the squeamishness associated with their raw product. "You know people get repelled at the odour of urine. If it's their own urine, they don't mind, but somebody else's urine they don't like touching it. To avoid that they added two molar solution of washing soda at point one percent, inside the urine, so it suppresses the odour of the urine," says Lawal Olaide, head of science of Doregos Private Acedemy. The quartet, aged between 14 and 15, are hopeful the urine generator will provide an environmentally friendly energy alternative for the poor. Even though wind and solar energy is harnessed in Nigeria, the options are capital intensive and not affordable for most rural dwellers. The young innovators have spent just 64 dollars on their invention and believe with another small investment they can make the device more compact, and more practical in millions of homes throughout the developing world.

Reducing Girls' School Absences in Africa

03:00
From VOA Learning English, this is the Education Report in Special English.A new study shows that simple, low-cost interventions can help teenage girls in Africa stay in school during their monthly periods. Paul Montgomery of Oxford University in Britain led the study. He said women are a driving force of development across Africa. So it is important, he said, to keep girls in school. One hundred twenty girls in Ghana took part in the study. Their average age was 16. They attended three secondary schools in urban areas and one in a rural area.In the study, girls at two of the schools received free sanitary pads and lessons on puberty. Their attendance increased by an average of six days during a 65-day school term. The puberty lessons included information about personal care during menstruation. The girls also learned about the biology of their developing bodies and about pregnancy. At the third school, the girls received the lessons but not the free pads. Attendance by these girls also improved about the same amount, over five months. At the fourth school the girls did not receive the pads or the lessons. That group showed no improvement in school attendance. Paul Montgomery says the girls in the study had several reasons for missing school during their monthly bleeding. A majority expressed embarrassment about the changes in their bodies.Paul Montgomery says the interventions might not only keep girls from missing school, but also reduce teen pregnancies. The Public Library of Science published the study in its journal PLOS One. A larger study is taking place in Uganda until 2015. Health and Education in Africa: the Tarkwa Breman Model School for Girls and Community Clinic

02:55
Shadrack Frimpong has vowed to challenge the notion that investing in girls’ education isn’t worthwhile. As a President’s Engagement Prize-winner, Frimpong hopes to make a difference for the girls and families of Tarkwa Breman, the rural Ghanaian village where he grew up. His prize money will go toward the construction of a girls’ school and a medical clinic. Frimpong, a biology major in the College of Arts & Sciences with extensive global health coursework, has witnessed friends and family members in Tarkwa Breman suffer from HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, and other diseases—a situation compounded by the village’s lack of accessible health care. He also realized that the failure to provide an education to girls leads them down a path that too often ends a sexually transmitted disease or high-risk adolescent pregnancy, as was the case with one of Frimpong’s childhood friends. “My friend’s situation showed me how health and education are inextricably linked,” Frimpong says. Frimpong’s plans are comprehensive: With the support of his parents, he met with his village’s chief, who arranged for the donation of 100 acres of land where the facilities will be built. A portion of that land will be turned into a farm on which students’ families will work, once a week, in exchange for a free education for their daughters. Revenues from the cocoa crops will help pay for the school’s maintenance costs. He is working with the Ghanaian ministries of Health and Education to supply teachers and doctors to staff the school, which is planned to accommodate 200 students, and clinic, slated to include consultation rooms, a pharmacy, a dressing/injection room, a laboratory, a delivery room, and an on-call room. Frimpong will be in Tarkwa Breman this summer to oversee plans for the facility. Penn architecture students, guided by Richard Wesley of the School of Design, will also be traveling there to survey the land and design the building, which is expected to open in the summer of 2016. Then, starting the following fall, Frimpong plans to go back and forth between Ghana and the U.S. while he attends medical school, pursuing joint degrees in medicine and health policy.
