How to Make an Old Fashioned | Cocktail Recipes

Check out the official app http://apple.co/1I00csa Watch more How to Make Cocktails videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/510357-How-to-Make-an-Old-Fashioned-Cocktail-Recipes The Old-Fashioned cocktail is so old that 100 years ago they still called it an Old-Fashioned. A lot of classic cocktails were invented in the 19th century. We're talking 18th century. So it's definitely earned its name. We're going to start with two ounces of rye whiskey, rye not bourbon, in this case. Because I think it tastes better, bourbon is a little sweeter, and rye is also what they used back in the 19th century. It was much more popular then. For our sweetener we're going to use a little bit of simple syrup. You could also muddle a sugar cube if you want. I just think this mixes better. Just bar spoon of that, not too much or it's going to get way too sweet. Two dashes of angostura bitters and two dashes or orange bitters, which are a little harder to find, but they are available at some specialty stores and I think they're really important in making a great Old-Fashioned. You can make a good Old-Fashioned without them two dashes, but not a great one, for my money anyway. Now you notice I'm not going to muddle anything in this drink. I'm just going to stir it the way it is right now. The muddling of the orange and the cherry was something that came about in the 20th century in the '50's post-Prohibition. A lot of stuff got changed around in Prohibition. People forgot how to make certain drinks, taste's changed, so I'm not saying that's a bad drink. I just don't think that's the most classic way to make it and I prefer it this way. So we're stirring it the way it is. All right, let's get our ice, and I'm going to get my frozen glass, and the Old-Fashioned is served on the rocks. And because it's all spirit, and we're going to sip this drink, it's a really stiff drink. We don't like those ice cubes to be really small, because they melt really fast. They dilute the drink too much. Give it a nice stir there. So what I did was I took a muffin tin and I put some water in that and made these big giant ice cubes. So it keeps the drink cold, but doesn't dilute it too much. It doesn't get too watery. The perfect balance of both worlds. All right, let me grab that ice. Tell me that doesn't look awesome. All right, that should be good enough. And now we're going to garnish this, as we strain it over our nice hockey puck, with a lemon peel and an orange peel. That's the only fruit we're going to put in this. I think maybe that's how the orange and cherry muddling thing started to make it's way into an Old-Fashioned. They used to put peels on them, and then maybe people started putting the whole fruit in them, I don't know not recommended. So holding the pith towards us, the white part towards us, and just squeezing gently the oils out into the glass. As there's the lemon and drop them in there, and there you go. It may not be how Don Draper makes it, but it's probably how George Washington did the classic Old-Fashioned.

Why Do People In Old Movies Talk Weird?

02:54
It’s not quite British, and it’s not quite American – so what gives? Why do all those actors of yesteryear have such a distinct and strange accent? Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/movies-film-channel.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/1j6yim Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/4FoAQy Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com If you’ve ever heard old movies or newsreels from the thirties or forties, then you’ve probably heard that weird old-timey voice. It sounds a little like a blend between American English and a form of British English. So what is this cadence, exactly? This type of pronunciation is called the Transatlantic, or Mid-Atlantic, accent. And it isn’t like most other accents – instead of naturally evolving, the Transatlantic accent was acquired. This means that people in the United States were taught to speak in this voice. Historically Transatlantic speech was the hallmark of aristocratic America and theatre. In upper-class boarding schools across New England, students learned the Transatlantic accent as an international norm for communication, similar to the way posh British society used Received Pronunciation – essentially, the way the Queen and aristocrats are taught to speak. It has several quasi-British elements, such a lack of rhoticity. This means that Mid-Atlantic speakers dropped their “r’s” at the end of words like “winner” or “clear”. They’ll also use softer, British vowels – “dahnce” instead of “dance”, for instance. Another thing that stands out is the emphasis on clipped, sharp t’s. In American English we often pronounce the “t” in words like “writer” and “water” as d’s. Transatlantic speakers will hit that T like it stole something. “Writer.” “Water.” But, again, this speech pattern isn’t completely British, nor completely American. Instead, it’s a form of English that’s hard to place… and that’s part of why Hollywood loved it. There’s also a theory that technological constraints helped Mid-Atlantic’s popularity. According to Professor Jay O’Berski, this nasally, clipped pronunciation is a vestige from the early days of radio. Receivers had very little bass technology at the time, and it was very difficult – if not impossible – to hear bass tones on your home device. Now we live in an age where bass technology is booms from the trunks of cars across America. So what happened to this accent? Linguist William Labov notes that Mid-Atlantic speech fell out of favor after World War II, as fewer teachers continued teaching the pronunciation to their students. That’s one of the reasons this speech sounds so ‘old-timey’ to us today: when people learn it, they’re usually learning it for acting purposes, rather than for everyday use. However, we can still hear the effects of Mid-Atlantic speech in recordings of everyone from Katherine Hepburn to Franklin D. Roosevelt and, of course, countless films, newsreels and radio shows from the 30s and 40s. "Alive" is the first of two visually mesmerising fashion films for costume designers Prangsta. Director Samuel Martin was given the freedom to come up with the design and concept and the result are a stunning and unique films. The film promotes Prangsta's bespoke style and collections. "I wanted to steer away from the classic fashion film look and create a visual experience with a story line, however ambiguous. The challenge was to create a film that portrayed Prangsta's fashion range, style and feel and, at the same time, deliver a concept with visuals that are unique, fresh and eye-catching. I wanted to create something fresh with this film, something I haven't seen before, certainly not something to this extent," explains Martin. Prangsta "ALIVE" fashion film D&AD anonymous

03:58
Winner of Best Director and Best Actress at the 2014 Bokeh South African Fashion Film Festival. Winner of Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Make-Up at the 2014 London Fashion Film Festival. This 4-minute film is the first of two films showcasing Prangsta's unique range of clothes and accessories. CAST Puppet: Kim Lysette Puppet maker: Zaf Shabir CREW Director: Samuel A. Mansion House Fashion Show (1956)

05:52
Mansion House, London. C/U shot of a big gold cup. Camera tilts up to show two smaller gold cups on the shelf above. Further tilt up reveals a golden plate on the higher shelf. Cut to a M/S of a coat of arms. M/S of people entering the hall. Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of London are among the first to enter. Sir Cuthbert (sp?) Ackroyd, Lord Mayor of London has "...established a precedent by acting as host to - and here's the behind-the-scenes-clue ... yes, a fashion show!" - voiceover informs pompously. M/S of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress as they take their seats. M/S of the models, behind a curtain, getting ready for the fashion show. M/S of the first row of the audience, it looks more like an opera audience then a fashion show. L/S of a girl wearing red wool tweed coat and hat designed by John Cavanagh, walking down the catwalk, people around watching. High angle long shot of the catwalk and the audience. Cut to a girl wearing "Counterpart" - the box grey jacket, same colour slim dress and a large Beaver hat and muff. The next creation is called "Scarab-line". Designed by Owen, it is a tailored suit with high neckline and draped back which creates the "Scarab-line". Brown dress with a Cossack hat and stole of natural blue fox fur is design by Hartnell and it is, voiceover suggests, - "the sort of glamorous model the average housewife dreams about." He also says: "..the mannequins wait their turn in an atmosphere of tranquility, in keeping with the dignity of the setting; aided no doubt by the inspiring presence of the Lord Mayor's own personal attendance." M/S of the models and designs are juxtaposed with M/S of the audience and C/U shots of the faces admiring the outfits. M/S of a mannequin talking to the doorman in traditional uniform. She wears an outfit designed by Mattli. Slightly bell shaped olive colour coat with brown fur collar and brown hat and gloves. Underneath, she wears a green tweed dress with matching green belt - quite simple. "Dear Watson", creation of Charles Creed is full length cape over the coat, plus beret - all made in same material. Several shots of the mannequins wearing evening gowns, chatting behind the curtain. One of them wears a long ball gown "by Digby Morton in the ancient colours of the hunting Stewart." L/S of a girl wearing long yellow dress as she walks across the catwalk. "Designed by Hardy Amies, this full length hostess gown, would look beautiful in any fashion age" - tells the voiceover. The last creation (and the most impressive one) is a cream long ball dress created by Michael Sherard. The dress has high neckline and low cut back. It is beautifully embroidered with crystals and dips, looks very fragile and highly feminine. Note: Terribly pompous upper class commentary - awful! Mute and track neg for this story are missing. Location Unknown / Unclear. Fashion display on static models at theatre stage - expressionists and surrealist stage settings by various artists - fantastic. Some close up shots of the creations - frocks, hats, handbags etc. There are several different mise-en-scenes, one of them done by Jean Cocteau - Tribute to Rene Clair, author of the film 'I Married a Witch'. Several shots of the women looking at the staged models showing that the stages and models are much smaller in size then previously seen. Prangsta "VENGEANCE" fashion film 2014

03:45
"Vengeance" is the second of two visually mesmerising fashion films for costume designers Prangsta. Director Samuel Martin was given the freedom to come up with the concept and look and the result is a stunning and unique film. This 3-minute film is the first of two films showcasing Prangsta's unique range of clothes and accessories.
