ANUBHAVA MANTAPA: It was an academy where everyone was welcome to seek knowledge and share experiences with complete freedom of thought and expression. Equality for both men and women was accomplished way back in the 12th century in India by Sri Basaveshwara. In contrast, the liberty of education for women was accomplished by Cambridge University only in the 19th century! Guide: Pictures (29:46)

Men Communicate Better

05:57
Communication is about conveying ideas succinctly and clearly. Men are much better at it, because they focus on precisely that. By contrast, women focus on establishing personal relationships with others, and perceive a lack of such rapport as aggression, distrust, or selfishness (unwillingness to share or help). Women assume lack of this emotional bonding indicates suppression of emotions, sociopathy, or hatred. In reality, it indicates that women not only lack trust in others, but also that they have weaker intellects. An inability to abide pure principles or abstractions without suffocating them in emotions and how it makes you feel, is clearly a sign of a weak mind. Kelly Jones

Linda's Film on Menstruation (1974)

17:49
Like us on Facebook! http://www.facebook.com/socialguidancefilms A 1974 film about menstruation financed by the Creative Artists Public Service Program of the New York State Council of the Arts(CAPS), a program that ran from 1970 to 1981. Fifteen year old Judy has just gotten her first period and tries to explain it to her befuddled boyfriend Johnny. In contrast to most menstruation films, we never see Judy's mother or older sister share her experience with her. There's only a cartoon character named Francine, who mysteriously appears on TV to talk about female anatomy and to remind girls to use birth control. The filmmakers also asked both men and women on the street in Manhattan for their feelings about menstruation and got some great responses.

Ezra Levant & Aruna Papp: Multiculturalism's war on women

06:42
Background: Culturally-Driven Violence Against Women: A growing problem in Canada's immigrant communities Executive Summary In a 1999 national survey of Canadian women's experience of domestic violence, several disturbing patterns came to light; they included the fact that the highest prevalence of domestic violence against women was found in the homes of immigrants from developing countries. Problematically, the ideology of multiculturalism, even amongst the most well-meaning advocates for female equality, tends to preclude any discussion of cultural values and traditions that project a "colonialist" mentality or that may lead to a perceived "racialization" of an entire ethnic community. This is a mistake for the following reasons: • "Honour killings" are carried out in order to cleanse the family name and restore the family honour. Unlike Western domestic violence, typically perpetrated bilaterally by one intimate partner on another, honour violence is perpetrated unilaterally within the family: against girls and women by male relatives—such as fathers, fathers-in-law, brothers, brothers-in-law, husbands and occasionally sons—often with the complicity of older females. • "Honour killing" is an ancient cultural practice in which men murder female relatives in the name of family "honour" for forced or suspected sexual activity outside the marriage, even when the woman were victims of rape. Yotam Feldner, a researcher at the Middle East Media Research Institute describes an honour killing as one in which a man who refrains from "washing shame with blood is a coward who is not worth living, much less a man." • For example, in 1999, Farah Khan, five, was killed by her father and stepmother after the father claimed the child was not his, claiming this was deeply shaming and the killing was necessary to redeem his honour. In 2003, Amandeep Singh Atwal, 17, was stabbed to death by her father, because she wanted to date a non-Sikh classmate. In 2006, Khatera Sadiqi and her 23-year-old boyfriend, Feroz Mangal, were killed by her brother. In 2009, Amandeep Kaur Dhillion, who was driven by her father-in-law to and from the family-owned and run grocery store, where she worked long hours, was killed by him when she threatened to leave his son. • Since 2002, the murders of 12 women were identified as honour killings; three other murders identified as domestic violence also have the hallmarks of an honour killing. • While violence against women is deplored in general in Canada, few researchers appreciate the many distinctions between historically observed Western patterns of abuse of women by men (and abuse of men by women) and newer, culturally driven abuse of girls and women by both men and women (with virtually no abuse of men by women in such culturally induced situations). • Amongst other differences, Western abuse is statistically infrequent, stems from psychological dysfunction around intimate relations between individual adults and is considered a cultural aberration by kinship groups and society in general. In contrast, culturally driven violence is statistically frequent, stems from culturally approved codes around collective family honour and shame, is condoned and even facilitated by kinship groups and the community. http://www.fcpp.org/publication.php/3351

FILM DESCRIPTION: Director Matthew Bright (Freeway) directs this tale of one of the most notorious serial killers in the annals of crime. Standing in stark contrast to the generally accepted view of serial killers, Ted Bundy (Michael Reilley Burke) was intelligent, quick-witted, and handsome. Engaged to a beautiful fiancée who never suspected his murderous tendencies, the feral Bundy develops a taste for murder that ultimately results in the deaths of at least 19 young women through the course of the 1970s. From posing as an injured driver and luring unsuspecting women to their deaths to an astonishing pair of jailbreaks and his ultimate death by capital punishment, viewers follow the murderous madman on a crime spree that shocked a nation and left the public's perception of what a serial killer is truly capable of forever changed. Dublin Marathon 2006 TV Highlights - Unravel Travel TV

Russian Sokolov sets new record to win Dublin Marathon 2006. A Russian runner today broke the record for Dublin City Marathon by a minute and a half. Aleskey Sokolov completed the 26 mile course in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 39 seconds. Fellow Russian Alina Ivanova also took the top spot in the women's event, crossing the line in 2:29:49. It was the first time either runner had taken part in the Dublin marathon, which attracted 10,500 participants from 60 different countries. "It feels great," said the winner through an interpreter. "It was a good course and the race went very well for me." Four other competitors completed the gruelling race in under 2 hours 15 minutes, with more than 100 of the top runners crossing the line in less than three hours. Around 5,500 Irish runners also pounded the streets, with Cian McLoughlin and Jill Shannon taking the top positions in the mens and women's section. "It was a good course," said Cian, 31, of Clonliffe Harriers. "Our rhythm would change with the wind, which would be against us and as we circled a corner came behind us, but generally conditions were good." Although his first time running in Dublin, Cian has taken part in marathons all over the Europe including Frankfurt, Vienna, Berlin and London. His personal best is 2 hours 18 minutes. Jill, 24, from Belfast, a member of Lagan Valley Athletic Club, crossed the line just seconds ahead of last year's Irish women's winner Pauline Curley from Tullamore. "It was never uncomfortable and I was never out of breath, but the last mile and a half was the hardest," said Jill, whose first marathon it was. "My legs are aching, I don't know where my little sprint from the end came from. "I would take part in one again, but not for a while. The training is draining." Competitors left the starting line to the sounds of samba bands, and made their way through the streets of Dublin. The weather conditions were perfect, with dry skies and light winds a complete contrast to last year's heavy rain and wind. Supporters were also cheered as the runners pushed themselves with an energetic sprint across the finish line. Richie Powell, from Wales, was first across the line in the wheelchair section, coming home in just under 1 hour 55 minutes. The 35-year-old, who won the Dublin event when he last took part in it in 1994, will fly over to New York on Friday to compete in another marathon next Sunday. "It was absolutely brilliant," he said. "I am very pleased with my performance." Race Director Jim Aughney said the event had passed fabulously. "The race record broke here today was great," said Mr Aughney. "It was a very brave run by him. "He went out on his own from a very early stage and ran practically solo all the way. "He did at least eight or nine miles at a five minute pace, he really ran very hard." Mr Aughney said mild weather conditions and home competitors brought more supporters out to line the streets. "We have a bigger Irish field taking part this year, with 5,500 in the race, so family, friends and neighbours are all coming out to support them," he added. "We have had very good support around the track." Results: Wheelchair race: Richie Powell -- Wales -- 1:54: Men's overall: 1. Aleksey Sokolov -- Russia -- 2:11:39 2. Oleksandr Kuzin -- Ukraine -- 2:13:11 3. Edwin Komen -- Kenya -- 2:13:26 Men's Irish: 1. Cian McLoughlin -- 2:22:37 2. Paul McNamara -- 2:25:44 3. Pauric McKinney -- 2:28:51 Women's overall: 1. Alina Ivanova -- Russia -- 2:29:49 2. Hayley Haining -- Scotland -- 2:31:51 3. Larisa Zyusko -- Russia -- 2:33:09 Women's Irish: 1. Jill Shannon -- 2:42:46 2. Pauline Curley -- 2:42:48 3. Lisa M Daane -- 2:45:38 The winner took home a cash prize of €106,400 with a bonus of €3,000 for a new course record. Unravel Travel TV http://www.unraveltravel.eu

Clerks (1/12) Movie CLIP - Jay & Silent Bob (1994) HD

Clerks movie clips: http://j.mp/1uwFxFG BUY THE MOVIE: http://amzn.to/t3uBZi Don't miss the HOTTEST NEW TRAILERS: http://bit.ly/1u2y6pr CLIP DESCRIPTION: Jay (Jason Mewes) & Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) spend another day hanging out in front of the Quick Stop. FILM DESCRIPTION: When Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) is reluctantly put in charge of the Quick Stop market on his day off, he tries, though half-heartedly, to perform his minimum-wage duties as efficiently as possible. This gets tough amidst the on-going fight with his girlfriend, Veronica (Marilyn Ghigliotti), and his attempt to get back together with his ex-girlfriend, Caitlyn Bree (Lisa Spoonhauer). Meanwhile, his friend and alter ego Randall (Jeff Anderson) is working behind the counter of the adjacent video store -- at least when he feels like it. Randall's unabashed disdain of his place of employment, a long with his self-admitted hatred towards its customers is a sharp contrast to Dante's feeble attempts at the niceties of customer service. Much of the film consists of Randall and Dante's criticism of their customers, their lives, and the world in general. Clerks, filmed in black-and-white on a budget of only $27,000, began the career of writer director Kevin Smith, who would go on to make Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001). The Chinese teams will face a formidable challenge at the upcoming world championships, Oct. 7-16 in Tokyo. The Chinese men will be represented by Olympic champions Chen Yibing and Teng Haibin, world champions Feng Zhe and Zhang Chenglong, and Lu Bo and Guo Weiyang. World and Olympic champion Zou Kai is the alternate. Olympic champions Jiang Yuyuan and He Kexin headline the women's team, along with Sui Lu, Tan Sixin, Wu Liufang and Yao Jinnan. Huang Qiushuang is the alternate. China's depth allowed it to ground world champions Zhang Hongtao (pommel horse), Yan Mingyong (still rings), Wang Guanyin (parallel bars), and Deng Linlin (balance beam). China was the most successful nation at the 2010 Worlds in Rotterdam. The Chinese men won half the gold medals, but barely held off Japan to win the team title. Compared with last year's world championships, this year should be a much more severe situation, The Chinese men team lacks strong all-arounders, he noted. In contrast, Japan has several gymnasts able to score above 91 points, including two-time world all-around champion Kohei Uchimura. The Chinese women won the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, but fell to third behind Russia and the U.S. in the Rotterdam team final. The team could win or even finish off the podium due to the strength of Russia, U.S. and Romania.

Byblos Women fashion show - Spring/Summer 2012

12:48
Antithesis and contrasts for spring-summer 2012 Isabelle Blow . A symbol. An icon. The muse of the greatest artists of the 1990s. The inspiration for the new Byblos Spring-Summer 2012 collection is born of the twin soul of this eclectic and multifaceted, cold but romantic woman. "Fashion overdoes things to make them more beautiful": a style combining the futuristic, strong, rigorous touch with a more intimate and delicate look, translated into the fabrics and the workmanship, into the volumes and proportions, into a play of strong contrasts. A collection expressing Isabelle's two opposing souls. The scabrous soul: cold, sometimes impetuous. Interpreted with origami shapes, by precise, geometric cuts, that lives in the outerwear with plays of patchwork; made in leather embellished with applications -- without stitching -- of plates obtained by carving, by inlays, by plays of three-dimensional thicknesses of material. To decorate, to defend. The most intimate and concealed neo-romantic soul of Isabelle, that expresses itself through laser processes that recall lace. But cut coldly. An antithesis to be found in the severe, solemn silhouette of the dresses, softened by flowing fabrics to shape the body, interrupting the unconventional character with strong finishes -- by laser, with capes -- and rigorous lasered-lace inlays. Antithesis in the tone-on-tone dresses which impose the lengths without being subjected to them. In the trousers, with an always contrasting loose volume, which plays down the rigidity of the outerwear, with the application of knitted ribs which convey a sporty chic appeal. Contrasts in the details. Scuba (net) with a technical look, leather with a futuristic allure. "I don't follow trends, I follow instincts": in the jacquard interpretation prints, placed organically on the item. Three-dimensional with futuristic-flavoured, many-petaled flowers, which rob the laces of their weave and interpret them in pulp style. A contrast to be found in the chromatic dna of Byblos. A soft, feminine palette -- from white to natural, warm-rope, almost mustard colour -- dramatically broken by the strong black and by unexpected points of intense, fierce cobalt blue and purple. A celebration where the very high heels, planted in the centre of the shoe, are almost a sculpture, a tribute to it.

Courage

02:21
It is written, "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends." Everyday our men and women in uniform show their love for our country by risking their lives in combat. In fact, it is a point of honor, that they will not abandon their wounded comrades on the battlefield. Their courage under fire, protecting the wounded and risking their lives pulling them to safety reveals the strength of the American character. In contrast, when our military men and women come home from distant battlefields, families with special needs children, who are transferred to states like Florida and Texas are abandoned. Their children with mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy and related developmental disabilities are placed on waiting list for help. For example, in Texas 100,000 are waiting and in Florida 21,000 have been waiting since 2003. They are a the end of the line and there is no end in sight. Because these military families have no help, many with special needs children must take hardship transferred to other states. Other military families are forced to decline oversee deployments because they must stay home to support their special needs family, thereby ending their military careers. In America, people with a developmental disability are our society's wounded and they are abandoned on the battlefield of life. Until our elected leaders find the courage to protect and support these children, we will be Left Behind in the USA. Join our efforts to end this injustice. Family and work: sharing tasks

09:50
Quotations from Saint Josemaria Family and work: sharing tasks The essential equality between men and women demands an understanding of the complementary roles which they play in the Church's growth and in the progress of society. Not in vain did God make them man and woman. This diversity should be considered not in a 'patriarchal' sense, but in its full, rich depth of tones and consequences. In this way men are freed from the temptation of 'masculinizing' the Church and society, and women from seeing their mission in the People of God and in the world as no more than showing that they can do equally well the tasks which were formerly reserved to men. I think that both men and women should rightly consider themselves as the protagonists in the history of salvation, but each complementing the work of the other. Conversations, 14 Family priority Firstly, let me say that I do not think there need be any conflict between one's family life and social life. Just as in a man's life, but with particular shades of difference, the home and the family will always occupy a central place in the life of a woman. For it is obvious that when she spends time on her family she is fulfilling a great human and Christian role. Nevertheless, this does not exclude the possibility of her having other professional work — for housework is also professional work — in any worthwhile employment available in the society in which she lives. I can understand why you state the problem the way you do. But I think that if we systematically contrast work in the home with outside work, retaining the old dichotomy which was formerly used to maintain that a woman's place was in the home but switching the stress, it could easily lead, from the social point of view, to a greater mistake than that which we are trying to correct because it would be more serious if it led women to give up their work in the home. Conversations, 87 Torn between many tasks This very real feeling is frequently due to particular limitations which we all have because we are human: it comes because we lack well-determined ideals capable of guiding our whole life, or because of a subconscious pride. At times, we would like to be outstanding in everything. And since this is impossible, it leads to confusion and anxiety, or even depression and boredom: you cannot do ten things at the same time, you do not know which to do, and you end up doing nothing well. In this situation, jealousy can develop, one's imagination easily becomes escapist and seeks refuge in fantasy which, leaving reality far behind, ends up weakening one's will-power. It is what I have repeatedly called 'mystical wishful thinking', made up of useless day dreams and empty ideals: If only I hadn't married, if only I did not have this job, if only I had better health, or was younger, or had more time! Like everything valuable the solution is costly. It lies in the search for the true centre of human life, which can give priority, order and meaning to everything. We find this centre in our relations with God by means of a genuine interior life. By making Christ the centre of our lives, we discover the meaning of the mission he has entrusted to us. We have a human ideal that becomes divine. New horizons of hope open up in our life and we come to the point of sacrificing willingly, not just this or that aspect of our activity, but our whole life, thus giving it, paradoxically, its deepest fulfilment. Conversations, 88 The answer: be organised and have ideals The problem you pose is not confined to women. At some time or other, many men experience the same sort of thing with slightly different characteristics. The source of the trouble is usually the same lack of a high ideal that can only be discovered with God's light. But smaller remedies, which seem trivial, must also be used. When there are lots of things to do you have to establish priorities, to get organised. Many difficulties stem from downright disorder. There are women who do hundreds of things and all of them well because they are well organised and have courageously imposed order on all their work. They know how to concentrate at each moment on what they have to do, without getting worried about what is round the corner, or what they might have been able to do before. Others are overwhelmed by all that there is to do, and because they are overwhelmed, they do nothing. An exclusive bonus clip from the upcoming documentary "How To Live Forever" directed by Mark Wexler. Opening In Theaters May 2011 New York City - May 13 Los Angeles - May 20 Nationwide Expansion - June HOW TO LIVE FOREVER Director Mark Wexler embarks on a worldwide trek to investigate just what it means to grow old and what it could mean to really live forever. But whose advice on immortality should he take? Does a chain-smoking, beer-drinking centenarian marathoner have all the answers? What about an elder porn star or the world's oldest person? Wexler contrasts these unusual characters with the insights of health, fitness and life extension experts in his engaging new documentary, which challenges our notions of youth and aging with comic poignancy. Begun as a boomer's quest for the fountain of youth, How To Live Forever evolves into a thought-provoking examination of what truly gives life meaning. What Islam Says About Women #2: Authorized Islamic Rules About Women

59:21
The religion of Islam makes very clear and definitive statements about women and their roles. Larry Wessels, director of Christian Answers of Austin, Texas/ Christian Debater, and Dr. Steve Morrison, director of research for Christian Answers (Steve has written 4 books on Islam: "Reliability of the Bible & Christianity vs. the Qur'an & Islam," "Answering Muslim Objections to Christianity," "Letting Islam Destroy Itself in a Muslim's Mind," & "Christian Dialoging with Muslims", see also website MUSLIMHOPE COM) analyze Muhammad's concept of women & thus the Muslim view of women in this 3 hour series. While Muslim men are allowed to have up to 4 wives, Muslim women are not allowed to have 4 husbands but only one. Muslim scholar al-Ghazali (1058-1111 AD) catalogued a list of ways women are inferior to men in Islam, here are a few of them: women get lesser inheritance, women get liability to divorce & inability to divorce, the wife must stay secluded at home, a woman must keep her head covered inside the house, a woman's court testimony is only counted as half of a man's, a woman cannot leave the house unless accompanied by a near relative, only men can take part in Friday and feast day prayers & funerals, a woman cannot be a ruler or a judge, if a woman or a dog passes by while a Muslim is praying it makes the prayer invalid (Bukhari vol 1, no 486, p 289; Abu Dawud vol 1 no 702, 703, p 181; Ibn-i-Mejah vol 2, no 949-953, pp78-80), etc. Muhammad also thought that the majority of the dwellers of hell were women which had an impact on his teachings concerning them. This episode reveals how Islam affects the sex lives of its followers (from normal marriage to sex with slave girls & captives). Show #2 in a 3 part series. This ministry has many more videos on the subject of Islam, such as our 10 hour series entitled, "Answering Islam," our 8 hour series entitled, "Can Believing in the Muslim Religion Send Someone to Hell?", our 5 hour series, "The Sects of Islam - Various Muslim Factions, Sunni Muslims, Shi'ite Muslims, 'Alawite Muslims, & Sufi Muslims," our 4 hour series, "Understanding Muslims & the Islamic Faith," our 3 hour series, "What Islam Really Says About Women." our 2 hour miniseries, "Why Did Muhammed Have So Many Wives? & Did Mohammed Marry a 6-Year Old Girl?", & many others such as "The Sahih Muslim Hadiths," "The Daughters of Allah - Satanic Verses," or "Islamic Holy War - Jihad" to name a few. A Tale of Two Countries: Botswana and Zimbabwe

01:10:11
According to Prof. Scott Beaulier, when most people think of Africa and the standard of living it provides, they tend to think of the entire continent as a whole rather than the individual countries. This type of thinking, however, overlooks some large differences that exist between African countries. Specifically, when comparing Botswana to other African countries, there is a stark contrast in living conditions. Prof. Scott Beaulier analyzes the data and explains why these differences in living standards exist. England, Edwardian Era around 1900 (enhanced video)

05:35
This video has been dramatically enhanced in quality, using modern video editing tools. The film has been motion stabilized and the speed has been slowed down to correct speed (from 18 fps to 24 fps) using special frame interpolation software that re-creates missing frames. Upscaling to HD quality was done using video enhancer software. I have been told that at least part of this film was shot in Cork (Ireland). The music is "Chanson du Soir" and "Arco Noir" from Harvey's Strings of Sorrow album. Contrary to some comments, this video was not enhanced by BFI but by me. Various VirtualDub filters were used (deshaker, sharpener, contrast and brightness correction etc.), plus sophisticated frame interpolation software to correct the speed, as will as Infornition software to upscale the quality to full HD.

Here's how you can get tested for STDS. Step 1: Know the guidelines Know the guidelines. The Centers for Disease Control recommends an annual chlamydia test for sexually active women under age 26 and for older women with a new or multiple sex partners, and an annual HIV test for sexually active men and women who are not in a long-term, monogamous relationship. Men who have sex with men and are not in a monogamous relationship should also be tested annually for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. If there’s a possibility you've been exposed to any STD in the past year, you should get tested. Tip The CDC recommends that females between the ages of 11 and 26 be vaccinated against human papillomavirus, some strains of which can lead to cervical cancer. Step 2: Ask to be tested Ask your doctor to test you for STDs. STD tests are not a routine part of annual physicals, and having a pap test does not mean you've been screened. If you don't have a doctor or you can't afford to see one, contact Planned Parenthood or your local health department for information on free clinics. Tip Use your zip code to locate an STD testing location at findSTDtest.org. Step 3: Be honest Be honest with your health care provider about your sex life and any behaviors that put you at a higher risk for an STD. If you're worried your parents may find out that you're sexually active, ask the doctor about their confidentiality policy. In many states, doctors cannot share information about your reproductive health without your permission unless they think you've been sexually abused. Step 4: Know what to expect Know what to expect. Your doctor will likely examine your skin, throat, and genitals for signs of infection, and collect blood or urine for testing. They may also swab genital discharge, tissues, cells, or saliva. There is no single test that can check for every STD. Step 5: Follow doctor's orders If it turns out you do have an STD, follow your doctor's instructions and finish any medicine prescribed, even if the symptoms go away before you're done. Tell your sexual partners so they can be tested, too. Refrain from sexual activity while you are being treated. Tip If there's any chance you may be pregnant, tell your doctor before taking any medication. Step 6: Get a follow-up If you were treated for an STD, have a follow-up visit to make sure the infection is gone. And continue to protect your health with regular screenings. Did You Know? 1 out of 4 teens in the United States becomes infected with an STD each year.

The Woman at the Well: A Picture of Grace, a Picture of Us (excerpt)

06:36
The woman at the well in John 4 provides a contrast to the story of Jesus' meeting with Nicodemus, an educated, religious, Jewish male. Juxtaposing Jesus' encounter with an uneducated, pagan Gentile woman, John teaches us that no works, however good, can earn God's favor. And no one, no matter how far removed from God, can ever be disqualified as a recipient of His love and grace.

Footage of S.M.Sultan

03:48
Sultan, SM (1923-1994) a renowned painter. His real name was Sheikh Mohammad Sultan but he is more widely known as SM Sultan. He was born on 10 August 1923 at Masimdia, a village in Narail district. His father worked as a mason, and Sultan joined him after five years of schooling at the Victoria Collegiate School in Narail. Sultan also began to draw the buildings his father used to work on and thus developed a liking for art. Sultan knew that an art education was only possible in Calcutta, but family hardship stood in the way. It was then that the zamindar of the area, Dhirendranath Roy offered his help. With monetary support from the zamindar, Sultan went to Calcutta in 1938. But Sultan did not have the requirements for admission into the government School of Art. With the help of another patron, Shahid Suhrawardy, who was a member of the governing body of the School, Sultan entered the Art School. Suhrawardy also offered him accommodation in his house, and the use of his own library. Sultan however did not complete his education. After three years in the school, he left and chose to work as a freelance artist. Sultan had a strong Bohemian streak in his character and something of a wanderer. He soon took to the road, travelling to different places of India. For a means of living, he drew the portraits of allied soldiers who had camped at different places in India. He held the first exhibition of his art work in Simla in 1946, but no work from this period survives, not even photographs as Sultan was totally indifferent to preservation of his work. For a time, Sultan lived and worked in Kashmir - mostly landscapes and portraits. Then, after the partition of the subcontinent in 1947, he returned to Narail. Then again, in 1951, he left for Karachi. There he taught as an art teacher at a school, and came in contact with artists like Abdur Rahman Chughtai and Shaker Ali, with whom he developed lasting friendship. In 1950 Sultan had gone to USA - exhibiting his work in New York, Washington, Chicago, and Boston, and later in London. In 1953 he returned to Narail. There he built a school for children, and a menagerie. He lived in a house full of cats and snakes. Except for occasional visits to Dhaka (where he had his first exhibition in 1976) he lived in the quiet isolation of his house. On first looking at SM Sultan's paintings, one gets the impression of vastness and strength. His canvas is large, like a spacious stage where life's dramas are played out. The cast of the drama consists of agricultural labourers, fishermen, simple householders, and toiling men and women. The men pose an enigma, since their large muscular and sinewy bodies contrast oddly with the emaciated physique of real life farmers and fishermen wasted by hard labour and hunger. Yet, in painting after painting, mostly in oil, but some in striking watercolours, Sultan painted the same human figures, symbolically suggesting the possibility of a dream rather than reality. Sultan believed in an arcadia where happiness and contentment would reign, yet was acutely aware of the exploitation, violence and deprivation that were the daily fare of the life of the villagers. The tension between expectation and reality is a strong undercurrent in his paintings, sometimes ironising his contrasted studies of innocence and deceit. His strong bodied men fight with spears for a newly risen sandbank, or kill a fellow villager in a clan war yet, in moments of domestic repose, they revert to their roles of caring fathers or husbands. At times, they turn into thinking figures, as in Reminiscence. His men are drawn in the European Renaissance tradition while his women- supple-breasted and graceful- belong to the old Indian tradition. Instead of delicate lines however, Sultan uses strong curved lines, and flat body tones so that they do not stand apart from the crowd of active males. Sultan's watercolours are bright and lively, but treat the same theme - nature and rural life. They contrast sharply with the often drab and flat oils painted in deep colours. Sultan tended to work heavily all over his canvas without living any empty space. His drawings, however, are masterful in their economy and compactness. The lines are powerful and full blown. In his later works though, the composition is less tight and focused, perhaps a sign that Sultan was growing a little impatient with the reality of his time. The vast majority of the organization's 28-member states allow gays to serve openly. But Turkey offers an instructive, and extreme, contrast. Where the U.S. "don't ask, don't tell" policy has been the subject of fierce political debate since it was launched by Bill Clinton's administration two decades ago, Turkey's ban has seen few public challenges. When Turkey's minister for women's and family affairs, Selma Aliye Kavaf, declared this March that homosexuality is a "disease that needs treatment," she wasn't just pandering to popular belief; she was repeating the official stance of the Turkish armed forces. Indeed, Turkey's gay conscripts are routinely forced to endure humiliation and abuse at the hands of their country's military authorities. What makes that fate especially terrible is that it's practically impossible for Turkish men to avoid exposure to military life, and the burden is on them to prove they are unfit for service. Every man between 20 and 41 years old is required to serve at least six months. Exemptions are granted only under two conditions: a mental or physical disability, and homosexuality. Turkey does not recognize the right to conscientious objection. Fearing rejection by relatives and discrimination by potential employers, many gay men have chosen to lie to army doctors about their sexual orientation. "Because you're asked at every job interview to say whether you've completed your military service, and to explain why not, the decision to get an exemption brands you for life," says S., a gay draftee in his mid-20s, over coffee at a restaurant in Istanbul. "Some people decide to deny their homosexuality and enter the army instead." (To protect the identities of certain people interviewed for this article, their names have been abbreviated with their first initial.) Many gays also conceal their sexual orientation to avoid the humiliation of having to prove it. According to the official commentary to the army's health regulation, for a homosexual to be exempted from service, "documentary evidence must prove that the defects in sexual behavior are obvious and would create problems when revealed in a military context." In the military's understanding, says L., a psychiatrist with experience on military health panels, "If a man is gay, it's not a problem as long as he is not behaving that way." According to S., "You have to prove that your homosexuality prevents you from being a soldier, from holding a gun, that it makes you effeminate, that it might affect your safety and make you vulnerable, and that it might endanger the unity of the military." To seek exemption, therefore, many gay men have to endure pseudo-scientific tests designed to appraise both their homosexuality and the extent to which it might render them "unfit" for service. "Parts of the test I took included having to draw a picture of a tree, a house, and a person," says S. "You're given a lot of crayons, and then you have to answer why you drew things the way you did." Other gay conscripts report having been asked whether they liked playing with dolls as children or enjoyed wearing women's clothing. Military psychiatrists who know better have to pretend that there is a scientific value to such examinations, says L., "because it's in the regulations." Astoundingly, some gays also report that they were asked to produce photographs showing them as participants in anal intercourse. Even then, Turkish authorities are said to apply special criteria. According to the military, and Turkish society at large, penetrating another man does not necessarily qualify as a homosexual act; only being penetrated is undisputedly homosexual. Hence the unwritten rule when it comes to such photos: "The man should be in the passive position, receiving from behind," L. explains, "and looking at the camera. Preferably while smiling."
