Debussy - La fille aux cheveux de lin - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra And Chorus / Peter Knight

02:50
When Claude Debussy gave France a great new piano repertoire, he copied Chopin in essaying preludes in all 24 keys. But as far as descriptive music is concerned, Debussy went further, assigning titles to each one of his preludes. The eighth of his first book, which dates from 1910, was a portrait of The Girl With The Flaxen Hair ('La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin') and, together with its companions, it marked a colossal leap forward in the composer's pianistic development, and was itself a fine piece of impressionistic portrait painting in music. Here we hear the piece in an arrangement for orchestra

Gounod - Funeral March of a Marionette - London Promenade Orchestra, Eric Hammerstein

03:28
London Promenade Orchestra, conducted by Eric Hammerstein Anyone who has ever enjoyed the devilish signature tune to The Alfred Hitchcock Presents television show unknowingly became a fan of Charles Gounod's charming "Funeral March of a Marionette." In a departure from the opulent manner of his grand operas - Faust and Roméo et Juliette, for example - Gounod devised a caricature of funereal ceremony by cleverly dressing a playful little theme in mock-serious orchestration for low clarinets and bassoons.

Kitten On The Keys - Wayne And Geraldi

02:39
When ragtime piano, which enjoyed a twenty-year fad at the beginning of the 2Oth century, faded away at the end of World War I, it was replaced by a lively variant known as "novelty piano." The pre-eminent example of this style was "Kitten on the Keys," which was introduced by its composer, Zez Confrey, in Paul Whiteman's Aeolian Hall Concert in 1924 (at which George Gershwin and Whiteman's orchestra also gave the first performance of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue). Confrey's piece was inspired by seeing the family cat walk across the piano keys. To play the tune properly, the composer advised, "be sure to scramble up the octave in the part that's supposed to sound like a cat bouncing down the keyboard. In other words, make a fist when simulating the cat running up and down. Otherwise it won't sound real." Handel - Messiah: Hallelujah Chorus - London Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus, John Pritchard

04:20
George Frederic Handel was born in Halle, a town in Saxon Germany in 1685. In 1712, he moved permanently to London, having earned a reputation as the most honoured opera composer in England. But the musical public was fickle as always and lost interest in opera. Undaunted, Handel began to compose oratorios resembling opera - telling a story rich in history and musical vibrancy - but which did not require expensive sets or costumes. Genius always wins. Again he was a success. In the summer of 1742, he received an invitation to submit a new oratorio for possible performance as a musical benefit for a hospital in Dublin, Ireland. A deeply religious man, Haendel chose a text based on the life of Jesus by an English poet, Charles Jennens. Always a rapid composer, he now surpassed himself, completing the work in just 23 days, at the end of which he said to his manservant, "I think God has visited me." The première in Dublin on April 13, 1742, was a signal success, even for Haendel. So many tickets were sold that gentlemen were requested not to wear swords to the performance, and it was suggested that ladies would do well to leave their hoop skirts at home. The music room where Messiah would take place simply was not big enough to accommodate as many people as wanted to attend, not to mention extra folds of material and weapons. King George II heard Messiah when it was performed for the first time in London the next year. As the strains of the mighty "Hallelujah Chorus" swept over the audience, the King, not usually known for his high musical taste yet apparently moved to rapture by this triumphant theme, leapt to his feet and remained there until the end, thus initiating the custom of standing for this magnificent chorus. R. Strauss - Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 (Theme from "2001: A Space Odyssey")

02:02
Philharmonic Symphony of London, conducted by Charles Gerhardt The opening tune from the 1968 Stanley Kubrick movie '2001: A Space Odyssey' starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood and William Sylvester. Session musician and jazz pianist Eumir Deodato rose to personal fame with his dance adaptation of Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra in 1973. Earlier the work had been popularised in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, which dealt with the subject of humankind and its destiny, not far removed from the original inspiration for Strauss's great composition, Also Sprach Zarathustra by Friedrick Nietzsche. The year 2001 must have seemed light years away when Stanley Kubrick produced, directed and co-scripted his sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1968. With star performers and dialogue obviously a low priority overshadowed by cutting-edged special effects, the senses literally tingle on a unique cinematic interplanetary joumey that is made even more exquisite by the background of classical gems like Also Sprach Zarathustra from German composer Richard Strauss. Never before had a low, throbbing bass note become so emblematic of a film than the opening of Richard Strauss's massive tone poem 'Also Sprach Zarathustra'. That famous opening sequence, capturing the moment in evolution when the ape evolves into human intelligence, is perfectly mirrored in the music. It rises out of unseen depths and culminates in two stabbing brass chords that seem to reflect the painful glare of the sunrise while also suggesting momentous things to come. Stanley Kubrick's extraordinary -- and unlikely -- choice of music for his 1968 MGM masterpiece brought this hitherto little-known Strauss work to wider attention -- even if many first-time buyers were a little dismayed to find that the whole piece is over 40 minutes long!

Berlioz - Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14: IV. March to the Scaffold - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

04:32
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Massimo Freccia. The Symphonie fantastique grew out of Berlioz's obsession with the English actress Harriet Smithson. The affair was a turbulent one, and for a time Berlioz was in despair. He himself described the programme or story of the symphony. The composer falls in love with the ideal woman. He finds himself at a party but is distracted by thoughts of his absent beloved. He takes refuge in the countryside and solitary reflection. In this movement, March to the scaffold, he is in despair and tries to commit suicide by taking opium. Instead of dying, he is seized by terrifying nightmares. He dreams that he has killed his beloved, is tried, found guilty and is being taken to his execution. There had been nothing in music to match both Berlioz's phatasmagorical visions and the dazzling array of orchestral effects he was able to marshal to depict his ideas in all their extravagance.

Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake: Grand Waltz - London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Massimo Freccia

05:22
One of the pillars of the classical ballet repertoire today, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake (or to give its Russian title, Lebedinoye Ozero) was not a success at its premiere at Moscow's Bolshoi Theater in 1877. Worn-out scenery and costumes, a mediocre prima ballerina, a complex plot and a score more symphonic in scope than any heard before contributed to the public's indifference. The ballet was not performed again until after Tchaikovsky's death, when Marius Petipa and his collaborator Lev Ivanov restaged it as a memorial to the composer. That time, only the second act was produced, but in 1895, Petipa and Ivanov staged the complete work at St. Petersburg, where it finally entered the world's ballet repertoire. Khachaturian - Sabre Dance - London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin

02:34
The rousing Sabre Dance was first heard in a now rarely performed ballet called Gayaneh, but it has gained immortality thanks to its perennial inclusion on the soundtracks of films and TV commercials - including for Fuji Films. A sabre dance boogie was a dance band hit for Freddy Martin and His Orchestra in 1948 and a rock version of the piece, by the Welsh group Love Sculpture, was a top ten hit in 1968. Its composer, Aram Khachaturian, was a Russian Armenian who became professor at the Moscow Conservatory during the Stalin era. Sabre Dance apart, British audiences perhaps know Khachaturian best for the ballet Spartacus, the 'Adagio' from which the makers of TV's The Onedin Line took as the programme's theme tune and which is also featured on 'Classical Music - The 50 Greatest Tracks'. Grieg - Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1: Morning Mood - London Festival Orchestra, Sir Alexander Gibson

03:57
Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1, Op. 46 : Morning Mood (Morgenstemning) London Festival Orchestra, conducted by Sir Alexander Gibson Ibsen's play Peer Gynt tells the legend of Peer, a worthless layabout who deserts his mother and his betrothed to embark on a picaresque series of adventures. For all that he tastes life to the full, at the end he comes to understand that all the real riches and rewards that life could ofgfer were his own fireside. Ibsen invited Grieg, Norway's greatest composer, to write the incidental music for the play. The two suites that Grieg rescued from the theatre have become, alongside his piano concerto, his best-loved music. The composer wrote of Morning, the piece with which the first suite begins, that 'it should be regarded as pure music. The interpretation is therefore of great importance. It is a morning mood. '

Bizet - The Pearl Fishers Duet Theme (from Wildlife Symphony)

02:48
Taken from the Reader's Digest video 'Wildlife symphony' Music performed by the London Promenade Orchestra conducted by Eric Hammerstein from a 1986 Reader's Digest recording. This glorious duet for tenor and baritone (here heard in an orchestral version) is one of the pearls of the operatic repertoire. In Bizet's exotically romantic opera 'The Pearl Fishers', Nadir and Zurga, pearl fishers and priests on the isle of Ceylon, rejoice at their reunion after years of separation and recall the beautiful Leila, with whom they were both in love, which brought about the destruction of their friendship. Leila becomes a priestess and the old rivalry flares up again.

Charleston - Bob Wilson and his Varsity Rhythm Boys

02:23
This is the best selling version of 'The Charleston' on iTunes. Of all the dance crazes to sweep the nation during the '20s, none epitomized that exciting and rebellious age better than the Charleston. Harlem piano pioneer James P. Johnson (1891-1955) wrote the song in 1923 for the Broadway show Running Wild. Soon kids down the street at the Cinderella Ballroom started dancing to it, and before long all America was, in the words of one 1926 ditty, "Charleston Crazy." The dance spawned dozens of other songs as well ("Charleston Capers," "Charleston Charlie," "Charleston Stampede"), and by decade's end had become a piece of pop history. Named after Charleston, South Carolina, the Charleston is a dance that developed in African American communities. It reached mainstream culture when songwriters James P. Johnson and Cecil Mark incorporated its rhythm in their song "The Charleston," introduced in the Broadway show Runnin' Wild in 1923. Soon flappers everywhere were dancing the Charleston in speakeasies in defiance of Prohibition.
